A shop that only touches 8-plus-year-old cars can still run a dedicated R-134a machine. A shop that services anything late-model needs R-1234yf capability — either as a dedicated machine or as one side of a dual-refrigerant unit. New Versus Used
Used AC recovery machines are the riskiest segment of used shop equipment. Here is why: refrigerant cross-contamination from a previous life can ruin the next system your machine touches, and there is no cheap way to know how carefully the previous owner ran it. The vehicle database on the machine is what tells the tech the correct factory charge weight, oil type, and any special procedures. A database that stops updating is a machine that gets less useful every model year. When you shop, ask:
- Is the database updated over Wi-Fi, USB, or by service visit?
- Is the first year of updates included?
- What does year two and beyond cost?
- How many vehicle records are in the database today?
Tank Support and Refrigerant Handling
Your AC machine for sale lives or dies on the internal tank and scale. The tank should be DOT-certified, the scale accurate to +/- half an ounce, and the safety cutoffs should stop recovery before the tank hits 80 percent full. R-1234yf Machines: The Identifier Requirement

This is because R-1234yf systems are sometimes topped up with parts-store R-134a or with counterfeit blends, and pulling that mixed refrigerant into your virgin tank ruins the whole tank.
