Every decision tree starts with money, and ALI certified 2 post lifts span a wide range depending on capacity and configuration. A straightforward 9,000 to 10,000 lb symmetric lift for passenger cars and light trucks sits at the entry point, while a 14,000 to 16,000 lb asymmetric unit built for trucks and vans runs noticeably higher. If your restoration work stays mostly with classic cars, muscle cars, and the occasional light truck, you don’t need to overspend on capacity you’ll never use — but you also shouldn’t cut corners on certification just to save a few hundred dollars.
We tell shop owners the same thing every time: buy the certified lift that matches your actual vehicle mix today, plus a reasonable margin for what you might take in over the next five years. If you’re doing oil pan gasket work on a mix of sedans and pickups, a 10,000 to 12,000 lb capacity ALI certified two-post is usually the sweet spot.
