Why Seasonal Storage Buyers Default to Symmetric Arms

Most of the seasonal storage calls we take start the same way: someone in a pole building or detached garage wants to stack a second vehicle above a daily driver, or free up floor space for a snowmobile, mower, or trailer during the off months. Symmetric arms center the vehicle directly between the columns, which keeps the geometry predictable and makes it easy to walk around the car once it’s up. Symmetric configurations also tend to be a little more forgiving in a shop that isn’t dedicated entirely to lift use. If you’re rolling a lawn tractor, ATV, or utility trailer under a stored car between uses, a symmetric setup gives you consistent clearance on both sides rather than a wider drive-through aisle on one side only. When Asymmetric Arms Make More Sense for Your Bay

Asymmetric arms swing out at different angles front and rear, which opens up a wider drive-through path on the driver’s side and makes it easier to get in and out of the vehicle before it’s raised. If your building has a narrower bay, or if you’re loading vehicles at an angle because of a support post or a door opening, asymmetric arms usually work better than a symmetric ALI certified car lift. The front arms are shorter and set at a steeper angle, the rear arms are longer, and that combination lets you open the driver’s door fully even in a tight footprint.

We see this most often in older Iowa farm shops and detached garages that were built for equipment, not necessarily for a two-post lift. The column spacing might be tighter than ideal, or there’s a support beam right where a symmetric arm would want to swing. Asymmetric arms give you flexibility to work around those obstacles without moving the columns. If you’re storing a longer vehicle, a full-size pickup or an SUV, asymmetric geometry also helps balance the load more evenly across the front and rear pickup points, which matters more than people expect once the vehicle’s been sitting loaded for weeks at a time.

Matching Lift Capacity to What You’re Actually Storing

Seasonal storage projects tend to creep in scope. A customer calls wanting to store a sedan and ends up asking about a full-size truck or a small RV six months later. Before you commit to any configuration, get honest about the heaviest vehicle that will ever go on that lift, not just the one you own today. An ALI certified car lift rated for a passenger car will not safely hold a loaded pickup, and pushing past the rated capacity is exactly the kind of shortcut that leads to structural failure over time.

We generally recommend sizing up one tier from what you think you need for seasonal storage use, especially in unheated buildings where humidity and temperature swings can affect components. A lift rated in the 9,000 to 10,000 pound range covers nearly everything a typical Iowa or Nebraska garage owner will ever park on it, from daily drivers to full-size trucks, with margin to spare. That margin costs relatively little upfront compared to buying twice because you undersized the first lift.

Concrete, Ceiling Height, and Anchoring for Storage Setups

Storage installations often go into buildings that weren’t originally designed around a car lift, which means the floor and ceiling deserve real attention before anything gets bolted down. We check slab thickness and cure time on every install, and for older pole buildings along the border we frequently find floors that need a core sample or additional reinforcement before an ALI certified car lift can be anchored to spec. Skipping this step is the single most common reason lifts fail inspection or, worse, shift under load.

Ceiling height matters just as much for storage use since the whole point is stacking a vehicle up and out of the way. We measure from finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction, including any lighting, HVAC ductwork, or door tracks, before recommending a lift height. A few extra inches of clearance on paper can disappear fast once you account for the vehicle’s own height plus the arm assemblies. Getting this measurement wrong means a lift that technically works but never quite feels comfortable to use.

For a lift that’s going to sit loaded with a vehicle for weeks or months at a time between uses, that independent testing matters more than it might for a lift that gets used daily and inspected constantly by an attentive owner. An ALI certified car lift carries a gold label showing it met load, structural, and locking mechanism standards before it ever left the factory.
