The first layout we see a lot of independent shops default to is lining two-post lifts along the back wall of the building, nose-in, with a shared clearance zone down the middle for parts carts and rolling stools. This works fine for general repair, but for exhaust and driveline access specifically, it creates a problem: your tech ends up working with their back to the wall, no room to walk a full driveshaft assembly out past the swing arms, and limited overhead clearance for pipe benders if the ceiling trusses run low over that wall.

Back-wall placement can occasionally take advantage of a perimeter footing that’s already thicker than the field of the slab, depending on how the building was originally engineered.
We always pull core samples or review existing floor plans before recommending a final anchor pattern, because guessing on concrete thickness is how you end up with a lift that’s technically certified but improperly anchored for its actual site. For garage build-outs still in the planning phase, we’d rather spec the slab correctly once than come back and repour a section after the fact.
Making the Final Call for Your Shop
There’s no universally correct answer between these two configurations — it depends on your bay count, your typical job mix, and how much floor space you’re willing to dedicate per lift.
