What Makes a Lift an “Alignment Lift” in the First Place

Not every lift can be trusted for alignment work, even if it can physically hold a car in the air. An alignment lift needs a runway surface that stays flat under load, front turnplates that let the front wheels rotate freely while the alignment camera or laser gets an accurate read, and rear slip plates so the whole chassis can settle naturally instead of binding against the deck. Standard 2-post lifts, by contrast, lift from fixed points under the frame or pinch welds, which is exactly the kind of unnatural loading that throws off toe and camber readings.

This is why most shops that do serious alignment volume run a scissor alignment lift or a drive-on platform lift rather than trying to make a general service lift do double duty. The runway design gives techs a stable, repeatable surface, and the open-center layout on many models leaves room to work underneath for tie rod ends, ball joints, and control arm bushings without repositioning the vehicle. Scissor Alignment Lifts vs. 4-Post Platform Lifts

A scissor-style alignment lift has a lower collapsed height, which matters if your ceiling or bay depth is tight, and many models fold flush enough to double as a general storage or service lift when you’re not aligning anything. That flexibility is valuable in a smaller independent shop where every lift needs to earn its floor space on more than one job type.

A 4-post platform lift, on the other hand, gives you a longer, wider runway and generally handles heavier trucks and vans more comfortably, since the load path runs through the full frame across four solid columns rather than a scissor mechanism. If you’re doing fleet alignment work, farm trucks, or anything with dual rear wheels, the extra runway length and axle-rated capacity on a 4-post setup usually wins out. Runway Length, Width, and Turnplate Placement

Get the dimensions wrong on an alignment lift and you’ll find out the hard way when a longer wheelbase truck won’t sit square on the turnplates. Runway length needs to comfortably clear your longest expected vehicle’s wheelbase with margin for turnplates and slip plates at both ends, and runway width needs to match your alignment equipment’s camera or target mounting points, not just the tires. We’ve seen shops buy a shorter, cheaper alignment lift and then discover their turnplates sit in the wrong spot relative to the front axle on half the vehicles they service.

Turnplate placement also interacts with your alignment system itself, whether that’s a Hunter-style camera system or another brand’s targets and sensors. Before you finalize a lift, confirm with your alignment equipment supplier that the runway length and turnplate positions are compatible, especially if you’re retrofitting an alignment system onto an existing lift rather than buying both together. Getting this dialed in during planning is far cheaper than shimming, extending, or re-drilling a runway after installation.

Capacity: Match the Lift to Your Actual Fleet

Capacity ratings on an alignment lift need to reflect the heaviest vehicle you’ll realistically service, not just the average sedan that rolls through most days. A lift rated comfortably for light trucks will get overwhelmed the first time a 3/4-ton diesel with a service body needs an alignment, and that’s not a situation where you want to discover the shortfall mid-lift. We generally recommend sizing up rather than sizing to the average, since the cost difference between capacity tiers is usually smaller than the cost of turning away heavier work.

It’s also worth thinking about how weight distributes across the runway during an alignment. Vehicles aren’t evenly loaded front to rear, and turnplates concentrate load at specific points rather than spreading it evenly like a flat deck lift would. A well-built alignment lift accounts for this in its structural rating, but a converted general-purpose lift often doesn’t. Maintenance That Keeps Alignment Readings Accurate

An alignment lift needs more routine attention than a standard service lift because tiny mechanical drift translates directly into bad readings. Turnplate and slip plate lock pins need to move freely and lock securely every time, hydraulic or mechanical leveling components need periodic checks, and the runway surface itself should be inspected for wear or damage that could throw off how a vehicle settles. Skipping this maintenance doesn’t usually break the lift outright — it just quietly erodes accuracy until a customer complains about a pull that shouldn’t be there.
