The alignment machine, the imager, is the piece most shops obsess over, but the honest answer is that most current-generation imagers from major brands read accurate on a level rack. We work primarily with Rotary alignment imagers because the software integration with Rotary alignment racks is clean and the calibration turnaround is short. Wireless CCD, 3D camera, and touchless systems all have a use case. What matters more is the shop workflow, not the sticker on the front of the machine.
For an independent Iowa shop running six to twelve alignments a week, a mid-tier 3D imager is the value pick. For a dealer running twenty-plus alignments a day, the top-tier touchless imager pays back on time saved per vehicle. We got a lead earlier this year from an out-of-state customer who wanted one heavy-duty lift and one standard lift on the same footprint so he could align a dually pickup and cars in the same shop. The imager itself does not care about capacity, it reads geometry regardless, but the rack has to physically hold the vehicle level under load.
Turntables, Slip Plates, and What the Alignment Machine Reads
Every current-generation aligner expects the front tires on turntables and the rear tires on slip plates. Turntables let the wheels rotate for caster sweeps and steering angle sensor calibration on newer vehicles. Slip plates let the rear axle float sideways during the toe measurement, which is critical on trucks and SUVs with solid or semi-solid rear axles. Skip either and you get repeatable but inaccurate numbers, which is worse than random ones because the tech trusts them.
Every 4-post rack we sell ships with mechanical turntables and both slip plates. Electronic turntables that read steering angle directly into the imager cost more and pay back only on high-volume dealer benches doing regular ADAS work. Day two is the imager: mount the columns or the camera bar, calibrate the target set, run a known-good test vehicle to verify the whole system reads truth. We do not leave the bay until a real vehicle comes off the rack with numbers we would sign our name to, and we run that verification pass with the customer’s tech watching.
