Myth: A Leaking Cylinder Always Means the Rack Is Junk
This is the number one myth that costs restoration shops real money. We’ve walked into plenty of shops in the Sioux City and Spencer area where the owner had already priced a brand-new set of alignment racks because one cylinder was weeping fluid down the leg. Ninety percent of the time, that’s a seal problem, not a structural problem. The cylinder bore itself is usually fine — it’s the seals and wipers that wear out from years of dust, weld slag, and metal shavings that are part of daily life in a restoration bay.
A reseal with the correct kit for your rack’s make and model typically runs a small fraction of replacement cost, and it brings the cylinder back to full spec if the bore isn’t scored. Myth: You Have to Send the Cylinder Out for Rebuild
Plenty of restoration shop owners assume a cylinder rebuild means pulling the whole assembly, shipping it somewhere, and losing bay time for two or three weeks. That’s true for some specialty cylinders, but for most alignment racks running standard hydraulic cylinders, we handle seal replacement and rebuild work on-site in northwest Iowa. We bring the kit, drain the system, pull the cylinder, inspect the bore, reseal, and get you back up running the same day in most cases.
The exception is when the bore itself is scored or pitted badly enough that a reseal won’t hold pressure. An alignment rack inspection catches seal wear, cable stretch, and anchor bolt loosening before they turn into a shop-down emergency. Restoration work often runs on tight project timelines with customers waiting on finished builds, and an unplanned rack failure in the middle of a job is a much bigger problem than a scheduled inspection.

This one trips up even experienced shop owners. A seal kit built for one manufacturer’s alignment racks often will not fit another brand’s cylinder bore diameter, rod size, or groove spacing, even when the racks look nearly identical from across the shop.
