A municipal fleet vehicle bay isn’t like a quick-lube shop with light passenger cars rolling through. Plow trucks, dump trucks, and heavy pickups loaded with salt spreaders put real weight on the platform every single lift cycle, and that weight travels straight through the cables holding the carriage in position. An ALM lift that spends its day cycling 10,000-pound trucks up and down for oil changes and fluid service sees far more cumulative cable stress in a single winter than a comparable lift in a passenger car garage sees in two or three years.

That duty cycle difference is exactly why we tell northeast Iowa fleet managers not to trust generic inspection intervals pulled from a manual written for light-duty use. Salt brine, road grime, and moisture packed into wheel wells drip down onto cables and sheaves constantly during winter months, accelerating corrosion in ways a dry summer garage never experiences. What a Proper Cable Inspection on an ALM Lift Actually Looks Like

A real inspection isn’t a glance from the shop floor. We start by running the lift to full height and walking the entire length of each cable, looking for broken strands, flat spots, kinks, or rust bloom that wasn’t there last time. Any place where you count more than a couple of broken wires in a short section is a red flag on an ALM lift or any other brand — that cable’s load-bearing capacity has already dropped below spec even if it hasn’t snapped yet.

Next we check the sheaves and pulleys the cable rides over, because a groove that’s worn oval instead of round will chew up a brand-new cable in weeks. We also check equalization — are all four cables under similar tension, or has one gone slack because of a stretched cable or a worn adjustment nut? Uneven tension on a lift means the platform can rack or tilt slightly under load, which is a serious safety issue for a fleet bay handling trucks day after day. We document everything with photos and note it against the vehicle log so the next inspection has a real baseline to compare against.

Setting a Realistic Replacement Interval for a Northeast Iowa Fleet

For fleet shops running heavy winter cycles, we generally recommend a full visual cable inspection every 90 days, with cable replacement scheduled proactively somewhere between 12 and 24 months depending on actual usage numbers, not just the calendar. That’s noticeably tighter than the annual inspection interval that’s fine for a lighter-use independent shop. Mixing a new cable with three older, more stretched cables on the same lift creates uneven load distribution, and that mismatch shows up as one cable doing more work than the others every single cycle. Buying a full set at once costs a little more up front but keeps the lift balanced and predictable, which matters a lot more when the vehicle sitting on it belongs to the county or the city and downtime isn’t optional.

Signs Your ALM Lift Cables Need Attention Right Now

Some warning signs don’t wait for a scheduled inspection. If you hear a new clicking, popping, or grinding sound during a lift cycle, stop and look before running another vehicle up. If the platform feels like it hesitates or jerks slightly on the way up, that’s often a cable losing tension or a sheave starting to fail. Visible rust streaking down the cable line, especially after a salt-heavy plow season, is also worth an immediate look rather than waiting for the next scheduled check.

We also tell fleet techs to pay attention to how the lift sounds compared to a month ago. Cables don’t usually fail silently — there’s almost always a change in sound, feel, or behavior before something breaks. Catching that early on an ALM lift means a planned cable swap during a slow afternoon instead of an emergency repair call with a truck stuck mid-air and a route that isn’t getting covered.
