Why Electrical Specs Matter Before You Buy an Aluminum Platform Deck

A lot of shops assume any lift plugs into any outlet like a shop light. It doesn’t work that way. Most hydraulic power units on an aluminum platform deck are built around a specific motor spec — commonly single-phase 220V for smaller shops, but plenty of drive-on units used for differential fluid service and quick-lane work are wired for three-phase 208-230V or 460V where the shop already has three-phase service for compressors or alignment racks. If you order the wrong motor configuration, you’re either running an extension of your electrical panel you didn’t budget for, or you’re sending the unit back.

We ask every customer in the Iowa-Illinois corridor the same three questions before we quote a platform deck: what’s your panel rated for, is it single-phase or three-phase, and how far is the run from the panel to the install location. That last one matters more than people think — voltage drop over a long run can undersize your wire gauge and trip breakers under load, especially with hydraulic pumps that draw a hard startup amp spike. Get an electrician’s read on your panel capacity before the lift shows up, not after.

Single-Phase vs. Three-Phase: What Most Shops Actually Have

Independent tire and alignment shops we work with across Iowa and Illinois are split roughly down the middle. Smaller two- and three-bay operations tend to run single-phase 220V, which covers most home-garage and light-commercial aluminum platform deck units without issue. Larger multi-bay shops doing volume differential fluid service, alignments, and tire work often have three-phase already run for bigger equipment, and in those cases we’ll spec the platform deck’s power unit to match rather than adding a phase converter, which is an added cost and another maintenance item nobody wants.

If you’re not sure what you have, look at your electrical panel’s main breaker and count the legs coming off it, or just call your electrician — don’t guess. We’ve had customers assume they had three-phase because a previous tenant did, only to find out the building had been converted to single-phase during a remodel years ago. Confirming this before ordering saves you a re-order and a delayed install date, which matters when your crew is scheduled to be down for a day anyway.

Amperage, Breakers, and Circuit Sizing for Platform Lifts

Once phase is confirmed, the next question is amperage draw and breaker sizing. Most aluminum platform deck power units in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range draw somewhere in the 20-30 amp range at startup, tapering down once the lift reaches height and the motor cycles off. Your dedicated circuit needs headroom above that draw, not a circuit sized right at the edge, because startup surge current is always higher than running current. A breaker that trips every time two techs try to run the lift and an impact gun off the same circuit is a productivity problem you don’t need.

We spec a dedicated circuit for every platform deck install — never shared with air compressors, welders, or lighting circuits. Shops that try to save an electrician’s visit by tying into an existing circuit almost always regret it within the first month, usually during a busy Saturday when three bays are running at once. If your shop is in an older building common across the Iowa-Illinois corridor, budget for a panel inspection as part of the install cost, not an afterthought once the lift is already sitting in the bay uninstalled.

Location, Conduit, and Where the Disconnect Should Live

Where you run power to matters almost as much as what you run. Local electrical code in most Iowa and Illinois jurisdictions requires a disconnect switch within sight of the lift’s power unit, which means planning conduit routing before the platform deck arrives, not after. We’ve seen installs get delayed because the customer expected us to run the wiring — we don’t do electrical work directly, but we coordinate closely with your electrician so the disconnect location, conduit path, and outlet height all match the lift’s actual footprint once it’s assembled.

This is especially true for portable and semi-portable platform deck units that might get relocated within the shop later. If you think there’s any chance you’ll move the lift to a different bay in a year or two, talk to your electrician now about running a second drop or making the disconnect location flexible. Retrofitting conduit into a finished shop floor after the fact costs more than doing it right during the original install, and it’s a conversation we have with almost every multi-bay shop expansion we work on.

Grounding, Surge Protection, and Protecting the Hydraulic Pump

Hydraulic pump motors are sensitive to poor grounding and voltage inconsistency, and an aluminum platform deck that’s cycling up and down dozens of times a day for differential fluid service, brake jobs, and tire work puts real wear on that motor over time. Proper grounding isn’t optional — it protects the motor windings and the control board from surge damage, and it’s one of the most common things we check on service calls when a lift starts acting erratic for no obvious mechanical reason.

If your shop is on rural or older grid infrastructure, which describes a fair number of shops we service outside the bigger Iowa-Illinois corridor cities, voltage fluctuation from the utility itself can be a real issue. A basic surge protector or voltage regulator ahead of the lift’s disconnect is cheap insurance against a control board failure that otherwise means a service call and downtime. We’d rather sell you a $50 part now than replace a control board in six months.

What Happens When the Electrical Doesn’t Match on Install Day

We’ve walked into more than one shop where the platform deck was delivered, uncrated, and ready to set — and the electrical didn’t match what was ordered. Sometimes it’s a phase mismatch, sometimes it’s a breaker that’s undersized, sometimes it’s a disconnect installed in the wrong spot entirely. Every one of these situations means delayed install time, and for a shop that scheduled a day of downtime around getting this lift operational for differential fluid service and other bay work, that’s real lost revenue.

The fix is always the same: confirm specs with us before the lift ships, not after it arrives. We’ll walk through your panel capacity, phase, amperage, and disconnect location on a call before you commit to a model. It takes fifteen minutes and it’s the single biggest factor in whether your install day goes smoothly or turns into a delay while an electrician gets scheduled on short notice.

Maintaining Electrical Reliability Over the Life of the Lift

Once your aluminum platform deck is installed and wired correctly, the electrical side isn’t something you think about again — until it is. We recommend a basic annual check of the disconnect, wiring connections, and motor housing for any shop running a platform deck in daily commercial use, especially shops doing volume work like differential fluid service where the lift is cycling constantly through a shift. Loose connections and corroded terminals cause more service calls than actual motor failures.

If you’re already scheduling annual lift inspections for cable wear or hydraulic seals — and you should be — add the electrical connections to that same visit. It’s a five-minute check that catches problems before they become an unplanned shutdown.
