Why Ceiling Height Drives the Whole Decision

Most restoration garages we’ve measured in eastern Iowa and western Illinois run somewhere between 9 and 11 feet of clear ceiling height in the working bay, and that number changes everything about which aluminum platform deck will actually work. A full-rise scissor deck can need 78 to 82 inches of overhead clearance just for the platform in its raised position, before you even account for a vehicle sitting on top of it. In a shop built in the 1960s with exposed joists, ductwork, or a low header over the bay door, that math simply doesn’t pencil out. We measure twice before we quote once — from the shop floor to the lowest hanging obstruction, not just the stated ceiling height, because sprinkler heads and light fixtures eat clearance fast.

For low-ceiling restoration bays, a low-profile aluminum platform deck in the 40 to 48 inch rise range is usually the better fit. It gets a car high enough for undercarriage work, wheel-off service, and rocker panel welding without needing runway-style overhead clearance. The platform still gives you real working height — just not the 6-foot lift travel that a full-rise unit demands.

Door Swing and Bay Width in Older Buildings

Family-owned shops that have been in the same building for 40 or 50 years often have bay doors that were sized for a 1975 pickup, not a modern crew-cab dually or a lowered street rod on a trailer. Door swing matters two ways with an aluminum platform deck: how wide the deck itself sits when the ramps are extended, and whether the vehicle can actually clear the door opening while positioned to drive onto the deck. We’ve had customers assume a 96-inch-wide deck will slide right through an 8-foot door — it won’t, once you account for mirrors, ramp flare, and the driver needing room to correct the wheel.

We typically recommend measuring the door opening at its narrowest point, subtracting for any weatherstripping or trim, and comparing that to the deck’s overall width including ramps in the down position. For shops running tight bays, a narrower platform deck footprint — sometimes 30 inches narrower than a standard four-post — makes the difference between a smooth pull-in and a three-point-turn nightmare every time a car needs service.

Real Dimensions: What We Actually Measure On-Site

Every aluminum platform deck quote we write starts with a tape measure, not a brochure. We record clear ceiling height at the lift location, floor flatness (restoration shops with decades-old concrete often have low spots that matter for leveling), bay door width and height, and the distance from the front of the intended lift location to any support column or storage rack. We also ask about the tallest vehicle the shop expects to service — a lifted truck or a car on a trailer changes the clearance math significantly.

We’ve found that shops skip the column-to-lift distance measurement more than any other, and it’s often the one that causes install-day surprises. A deck that fits the floor plan on paper can still conflict with a support post once the ramps are extended or the platform is raised to working height. We build a simple site sketch with every quote so nothing gets missed, and it’s saved more than one installation from a last-minute redesign.

Weight Capacity for Frame and Metal Work

Restoration work puts different stress on a lift than routine service. Frame-off builds, torch work, and heavy metal fabrication mean tools, jack stands, and sometimes a second vehicle’s worth of parts sitting on or near the platform. We size aluminum platform deck capacity with margin built in — if the heaviest vehicle expected is a 6,000-pound truck, we’re not speccing a 7,000-pound-rated unit and calling it good. Aluminum vs. Steel Decking for This Application

The aluminum platform deck itself — meaning the actual deck surface — offers a real advantage in restoration shops: it resists corrosion from the coolant, brake fluid, and stripping chemicals that inevitably end up on the floor during a build. Steel decking can pit and rust over years of that exposure, especially in Iowa winters when road salt gets tracked in on tires and drips off the undercarriage. Aluminum handles that environment better and stays lighter, which matters when a deck needs to be repositioned or when portable units get moved between bays.

That said, aluminum decking isn’t automatically the right call for every shop. Some heavy frame and chassis work benefits from the added mass and rigidity of a steel platform, particularly when a vehicle sits on the lift for extended periods during a multi-week restoration. We walk through both options honestly with every customer rather than defaulting to one material, because a family-owned shop investing in a lift that’s meant to last another 20 years deserves a straight answer about the tradeoffs.

Portability for Multi-Bay Restoration Work

A lot of restoration garages don’t run one fixed lift per bay — they shift a car between welding stations, paint prep, and mechanical work throughout a build.
