Why Site Survey Comes Before Any American Car Lift Purchase

The Urbandale shop owner’s problem was straightforward: winter and spring bring a flood of tire swaps and seasonal vehicle storage requests, and his bays were maxed out with cars parked on the ground taking up floor space he needed for active work. He wanted to add lift capacity that could double as storage during slow stretches and full working lifts during rush weeks. Before we quoted any equipment, we scheduled a site survey, because guessing at floor and ceiling specs is how installs go wrong.

A site survey isn’t optional paperwork, it’s the single biggest factor in whether an american car lift performs safely for the next fifteen or twenty years. We’ve been called out to fix lifts installed without one, and the fixes are almost always more expensive than the survey would have been. For a working shop especially, downtime from a bad install costs real money, so getting this step right protects both safety and the bottom line.

Checking the Floor: Thickness, Age, and Rebar

The first thing we check is the concrete. Lift columns concentrate enormous point loads into a small footprint, and older shop floors, especially ones poured decades ago without lift use in mind, may not have the thickness or rebar structure to handle it safely. We recommend a core sample or at minimum a documented pour date and thickness estimate before locking in any anchor plan.

At the Urbandale shop, the floor was original to a building built in the 1990s, poured at a standard thickness that turned out to be adequate for a two-post configuration once we confirmed there were no expansion joints or cracks running through the planned anchor zone. Had the floor been thinner or cracked, we would have recommended a new concrete pad poured specifically for the lift before installation moved forward. Skipping this check is the single most common cause of lift failures we see reported from other installers.

Measuring Clearance: Ceiling Height and Bay Width

Ceiling height determines what configuration of American car lift will actually fit and function in a given bay, especially for two-post models where the columns and overhead beam need real clearance above the tallest vehicle you plan to service. We measure from floor to the lowest overhead obstruction, including lights, ductwork, and sprinkler heads, not just the roofline.

Bay width matters just as much. You need enough room on both sides of the lift for door swing, technician movement, and safe vehicle approach, especially in a working shop where techs are moving between bays constantly. At the Urbandale location, we found one bay was tight enough that a standard-width configuration would have crowded the neighboring lift, so we recommended a narrower footprint model instead. That single adjustment kept both bays fully usable during peak season.

Power and Electrical Requirements

Most two-post and four-post configurations need dedicated 220V circuits, and older shop buildings sometimes don’t have spare capacity on the panel for another lift, especially if several bays are being upgraded at once. We always confirm panel capacity and run distance before finalizing a quote, because rerunning conduit through an existing shop is far more disruptive than doing it during initial construction.

In this case, the panel had enough room, but the planned bay was on the far side of the building from the electrical room, which meant a longer conduit run than expected. We flagged that early so the shop owner could get an electrician quote before committing to the install date, avoiding a costly surprise mid-project. This kind of foresight is exactly what a proper site survey is meant to catch.

Planning for Seasonal Storage, Not Just Daily Repairs

Because this shop’s real pain point was seasonal vehicle storage, not just daily repair throughput, we recommended a configuration that could hold a vehicle safely raised for extended periods without tying up floor space. That meant prioritizing lock reliability and structural rating over raw lift speed, since a stored car might sit raised for weeks at a time during the off-season.

We also talked through workflow: which bays would flex between storage and active repair, and how technicians would move vehicles in and out during the seasonal rush without bottlenecking the shop. An american car lift used for storage needs the same safety rigor as one used daily, arguably more, since a raised vehicle sitting untouched for weeks needs locks and cables that hold up without constant inspection. Planning that use case in advance changed which specific model we ultimately recommended.

Anchoring, Calibration, and the Final Safety Check

On install day, our crew followed the standard sequence: verify the floor markout matches the surveyed anchor zone, drill and set anchors to torque spec, assemble columns plumb and level, then run the safety lock and cable calibration before any vehicle load testing. Every step gets checked against manufacturer spec, not just eyeballed, because a safety lock that engages a half-inch off can be the difference between a routine job and an accident.

We finished with a full load test using a shop vehicle, cycling the lift up and down multiple times to confirm smooth, level travel and consistent lock engagement on both columns. Only after that test passed did we sign off the install as complete and walk the shop’s technicians through safe operating procedure. That final safety check is non-negotiable on every american car lift we install, seasonal-use or daily-use, because it’s the step that actually protects the people using the equipment every day.
