An annual lift inspection checklist is the difference between a shop that catches a frayed cable on a Tuesday morning and a shop that catches it when a carriage drops. We run these inspections all over Iowa — Ames, Des Moines, Ankeny, Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids, and plenty of small-town shops in between — and after enough years under enough lifts, we’ve learned that the paperwork matters less than the order you do things in. Our techs work top-down and outside-in so nothing gets skipped when the phone rings mid-inspection. What follows is the same annual lift inspection checklist logic we use on service calls, written out so you can pre-check your own equipment before we show up or before your ALI inspector does.

Start With Paperwork, Not Wrenches

Before anybody touches a hydraulic line, we want to see the lift’s history. That means the original installation documentation if it exists, the manufacturer’s manual, and any record of prior service. On a surprising number of Iowa shops, that folder is missing entirely — the lift came with the building, nobody knows who installed it, and the serial tag is painted over. That’s not a dead end, but it changes the inspection. Without a model and serial we can’t confirm the correct anchor bolt spec, the correct cable part number, or whether the lift has an open recall or field bulletin against it.

We also look at the shop’s own logbook. Daily and weekly operator checks are part of the standard, and a lift that’s been greased and checked monthly inspects very differently from one that’s been ignored for six years. If you’re building a program from scratch, start the log the same day you run your first inspection so next year’s tech has something to compare against. Write down lift capacity, model, serial, install date, and every part you replace. This first step takes ten minutes and it saves an hour of guessing later, which is exactly why it sits at the top of our annual lift inspection checklist instead of getting tacked on at the end.

Anchors, Concrete, and What’s Under the Slab

For a two-post lift, the anchors are the single most important thing on the list. We torque-check every bolt to the manufacturer’s spec — usually with a calibrated wrench, not a guess — and we look at the concrete around each base plate for spalling, cracking, or that telltale dust cone that means a bolt has been working itself loose. Any crack radiating from an anchor hole toward a slab edge or expansion joint is a stop-work finding until it’s evaluated. We’ve cored slabs in central Iowa shops that turned out to be three and a half inches over gravel when the lift required four and a quarter inches of 3,000 PSI concrete.

Baseplate condition matters too. If the plate has lifted even slightly at one corner, the column is rocking under load and every cycle is beating on the anchors. Shim stacks that were installed to level a post should be steel, full-contact, and not more than the manufacturer allows. We check that the columns are still plumb — a laser or a good four-foot level on two faces tells the story fast. Four-post and mobile column lifts have their own anchor rules, and some four-posts aren’t anchored at all by design, so this section of the inspection changes depending on what you own. Cables, Chains, and Equalization

This is where most failures live. We run a gloved hand along the full length of every lifting cable looking for broken wires, birdcaging, kinks, corrosion, and flat spots. One broken wire in a strand is a replacement, not a maybe. On a two-post, we’re also checking the equalization cables and their sheaves — a seized sheave chews a cable in a matter of months. On four-post lifts, we watch for uneven runway height, which almost always means a cable has stretched or a slack-cable safety needs adjusting.

Chain-driven lifts get the same scrutiny: stretch measured against spec, no stiff links, correct lubrication, and sprockets without hooked teeth. We also pull the covers and look at cable terminations and the anchor nuts at each end, because that’s where corrosion hides in a shop that pressure-washes floors. Cables are a wear item with a real service life, and we’d rather sell you a set now than a claim later. Safety Locks, Latches, and Arm Restraints

Every lock on the lift gets tested under load, not empty. We raise the lift a few feet, lower it onto the locks, and listen — you want a crisp, simultaneous engagement on both columns or all four corners. Locks that engage at different heights mean the ladders are out of sync or one latch spring is weak. We inspect the lock ladder teeth for wear and the latch pawls for cracks, and we verify that the release mechanism, whether cable-pull or air-actuated, fully retracts every latch and lets them all drop back in cleanly.

Arm restraints on two-post lifts are the most commonly failed item we find, and it’s usually not dramatic — a gear tooth is worn round, a pin is missing, or somebody bent a restraint bracket backing a truck out. A restraint that doesn’t hold the arm is the reason vehicles come off lifts. We also test slack-cable and overload devices, air-line pressure switches, and any electronic interlocks. On drive-on lifts we check the wheel stops and the runway ramps for weld cracks. Anything on this part of the annual lift inspection checklist that fails is a lockout item; we tag the lift and it doesn’t lift a vehicle until the part is in.

Hydraulics, Air, and Electrical

We start the power unit and listen before we look. A pump that whines or cavitates is low on fluid or pulling air, and a reservoir with milky fluid has water in it — common in unheated Iowa shops where condensation cycles all winter. We check fluid level with the lift fully down, inspect every hose for abrasion, weeping, and bulges at the crimps, and look for cylinder rod scoring or a wet seal that’s been “just seeping” for a year. Cylinder creep is measured, not eyeballed: raise the lift, mark it, and come back after fifteen minutes.

Electrically, we want the disconnect to actually disconnect, the motor to be properly grounded, and no romex sagging across the top of a column. Conduit, correct breaker size, and a control station that returns to neutral when released are all on the list. Air-actuated lock releases get a leak-down test — a slow leak means locks can creep out of engagement overnight. We also verify the lift descends at a controlled rate and stops immediately when the control is released. Labels, Adapters, and the Work Area

Missing or unreadable safety labels are an automatic finding, and they’re the cheapest thing on the whole list to fix. Capacity placards, lock-engagement decals, operator instructions, and ANSI/ALI warning labels all need to be present and legible. We keep label kits for the common Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas models on the truck for exactly this reason. Same with the operating manual — the standard expects it to be available to the operator, not filed at a corporate office in another state.

Then we look at the stuff around the lift. Adapters and truck adapters should be the manufacturer’s, matched in pairs, and not a stack of 2x4s and a broken jack pad. We check swing arm pins for wear, screw-pad threads for damage, and that adapter sets are complete. Floor condition, drainage, clearance to walls and doors, overhead obstructions, and lighting all factor in, because a lift installed too close to a garage door is a lift that gets hit. Finally we confirm nothing is stored under the lift and the columns aren’t being used as a shelf. These items don’t fail lifts often, but they fail inspections constantly.

What Happens After the Annual Lift Inspection Checklist Is Done

An inspection isn’t finished when the boxes are checked. We give you a written report with every finding sorted into three buckets: safe to operate, repair required soon, and do not operate. That last category gets a physical tag on the control station, because verbal warnings evaporate the second a tech gets busy. If we’re already on site with the part, we fix it that day. If it’s a cable set, a cylinder, or a lock assembly that needs ordering, we tell you the realistic lead time and whether the lift can stay in service in the meantime.

Then we set the calendar. Once a year is the baseline for most shops, but a high-cycle dealership bay or a lift running fleet trucks all day deserves more frequent attention, and we’ll say so.
