The Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) sets the ANSI/ALI ALOIM standard that governs how often lifts get inspected and by whom. That standard calls for a documented annual lift inspection performed by a person trained and certified specifically for that task — not just a general maintenance visit. Insurance carriers increasingly ask for proof of this, and OSHA can reference it during a workplace safety review. If a lift fails and someone gets hurt, the first document requested is the inspection record.
We’ve walked into shops across Iowa where the previous inspection was really just an oil top-off and a visual glance. That’s not what the standard requires, and it’s not what protects you legally or physically. A real annual lift inspection is methodical: every load-bearing component, every safety device, every fastener torque spec gets checked against the manufacturer’s original documentation. Structural and Load-Bearing Components

We check the arm restrictor pins and locking mechanisms to confirm they engage properly and haven’t been bypassed or worn smooth from years of use.
For 4-post and scissor lifts, we look closely at the runway welds, the rollers, and the platform surface for cracking or excessive flex under load. Cables get pulled and inspected strand by strand for fraying, and we check that cable tension is equalized side to side — an unequal cable is one of the most common reasons a platform sits crooked, and it’s a warning sign of impending failure rather than just a cosmetic issue. Any lift with visible structural damage gets tagged out of service immediately, not scheduled for a follow-up visit.
Hydraulic System and Fluid Condition
Hydraulic lifts get a full review of the cylinder, hoses, and fittings for leaks, weeping seals, or soft spots in the hose jacket. We check fluid level and condition — cloudy, milky, or metal-flecked fluid tells us something is wearing internally even if the lift is still functioning normally. Low fluid combined with a slow-descending lift is one of the more common issues we catch during an annual lift inspection that the shop hadn’t noticed yet because it happens so gradually.
We also test the synchronization valve or equalizer system that keeps both sides of a 2-post lift rising together. A lift that’s slightly out of sync isn’t just annoying — it’s a symptom of a valve or cable issue that gets worse over time. On air-over-hydraulic units we check the air line, filter, and regulator for contamination, since a dirty air supply is one of the fastest ways to degrade a hydraulic system’s internal seals prematurely.
Safety Locks, Latches, and Locking Devices
Every lift built to ALI standards has a mechanical safety device independent of the hydraulic system, and this is where an annual lift inspection earns its keep. We manually test that the locks engage at every position, not just the top, and that they hold weight without hydraulic assistance. On a 2-post lift, that means locking pawls or a ratchet bar; on a scissor lift, it’s usually a mechanical safety leg or lock bar.
We’ve found locks that were painted over, rusted shut, or bent just enough that they no longer seated fully — all invisible during a casual glance but caught immediately when an inspector deliberately releases hydraulic pressure and tests the mechanical hold. This single check is arguably the most important five minutes of the entire inspection, because it’s the failsafe that protects a technician if a hydraulic line ever lets go while someone is underneath the vehicle.
Electrical Components and Control Panel
We check the control switches, contactors, and wiring for fraying, exposed conductors, or moisture intrusion, particularly on lifts installed near bay doors where road salt and slush track in during Iowa winters. Motor housings get inspected for overheating signs, and we confirm that emergency stop functions actually cut power rather than just looking like they should.
Grounding is checked too — an ungrounded lift near a hydraulic reservoir is a shock hazard that’s easy to overlook until it isn’t. We also verify that the lift’s rated capacity plate is still legible and attached, since OSHA and ALI both require that information to remain visible on the equipment at all times.
Anchoring and Concrete Condition
A lift is only as safe as the floor it’s bolted to. We check every anchor bolt for torque and inspect the surrounding concrete for cracking, spalling, or signs the anchor has worked loose over time. This is especially relevant in Iowa, where seasonal freeze-thaw cycles can stress a slab in ways that aren’t visible until you’re specifically looking for hairline cracking radiating from an anchor point.
If concrete has degraded near an anchor point, the fix isn’t just re-torquing the bolt — it may require re-anchoring in a fresh location or, in some cases, an engineered concrete assessment before the lift can be recertified for use.
