If you’re a weekend hobbyist doing restoration and metal work in your southeast Iowa garage, deciding on an asymmetric car lift is one of the biggest calls you’ll make before you ever pick a brand or a color. We get calls almost every week from guys building out a shop between Fairfield and Burlington who assume all two post lifts are the same until they start comparing arm geometry. They’re not. The arm style changes how you drive in, how you swing doors open, and whether you can actually get a floor jack under a rocker panel to do bodywork. What “Symmetrical or Asymmetrical” Actually Means

We got this exact question from a customer not long ago: are the arms on the lift symmetrical or asymmetrical? It’s a fair question and honestly one more people should ask before they buy. On a symmetric lift, the columns sit directly across from each other and the arms are the same length on both sides, so the car sits centered between the posts. On an asymmetric car lift, the front arms are shorter and angled outward while the rear arms are longer, which shifts the vehicle’s weight distribution and opens up the front end for door swing and driver entry.

The reason this matters for a restoration guy is simple: an asymmetric car lift gives you more room to walk around the front fenders and work on quarter panels without a column in your way. A symmetric lift centers the car more evenly, which some guys prefer for very long wheelbase trucks or when they’re doing heavier drivetrain work where balance matters more than clearance. Neither is wrong, but they solve different problems, and the arm geometry is baked into the lift’s frame. You can’t easily convert one to the other later, so this decision has to happen before you buy, not after it’s bolted to your slab.

Ceiling Height and Column Placement First

Before arm style even enters the conversation, measure your ceiling height and mark where the columns will land relative to your garage door track, wall studs, and any support beams. We’ve been out to shops in Ottumwa and Mount Pleasant where the customer picked a lift online, and then found out the column placement they wanted put a post right where a truss hangs down. An asymmetric car lift still needs the same basic runway clearance as any two post unit, so don’t let arm geometry distract you from the fundamentals of your slab and ceiling.

We also tell people to think about where they’ll park the second vehicle or workbench while the lift is in use. Asymmetric arms swing differently than symmetric ones, and if you’ve got a narrow single-bay garage, that swing radius can eat into space you were counting on for a parts table or a welding cart. Walk it out with tape on the floor before the lift ever arrives.

Concrete Thickness and Anchoring

Every two post lift, symmetric or asymmetric, needs a slab that meets the manufacturer’s thickness and cure-time specs, and this is where we see more restoration projects stall than almost anywhere else. A lot of older Iowa garages have four inch slabs poured decades ago, and that’s often not enough for a full-size lift rated for heavier trucks. We recommend a core sample or at minimum a good look at your slab’s age and condition before you commit to an asymmetric car lift, because the anchoring bolts are what keep that lift, and your vehicle, off the ground safely.

If your slab doesn’t meet spec, you have options: pour a new pad in that bay, or step down to a lighter duty lift rated for a lower slab thickness. Either way, this conversation needs to happen during your pre-purchase checklist, not after the lift shows up on a truck.

Match the Lift to What You Actually Work On

Restoration and metal work often means older trucks, muscle cars, and project vehicles that don’t have factory-standard lift points. An asymmetric car lift with adjustable, multi-stage arms gives you more flexibility to find solid pickup points on frames that weren’t designed with modern jack pads in mind. We’ve set customers up with front arms that have a third stage of extension specifically because they’re pulling front clips or doing floor pan replacement and need extra reach without repositioning the vehicle.

Weight capacity matters here too. Don’t buy based only on what you own today. If there’s a diesel truck or a heavier project in your future, size up now rather than replacing the lift in three years. A 9,000 to 10,000 lb asymmetric car lift covers most hobbyist restoration work in Iowa, but talk through your actual project list with us before you settle on a capacity.

Drive-Through Clearance Numbers Are Not Marketing Fluff

On a recent call, a customer was comparing two lifts from the same manufacturer where one had a 96 inch drive-through width and the other came in around 103 inches with a three-stage front arm setup. That seven inch difference sounds small until you’re trying to open both doors on a full-size crew cab inside a two-car garage. Drive-through clearance is directly tied to arm style and stage count, and it’s one of the most overlooked specs on any spec sheet.

When you’re comparing an asymmetric car lift against a symmetric option, pull the actual drive-through width and column-to-column spacing for both, not just the marketing headline capacity number. Power, Air, and Electrical Requirements

Most two post lifts run on standard 220V single phase power, but confirm your garage has that circuit available or budget for an electrician before installation day. Some asymmetric car lift models also need a compressed air line for the locking mechanism, so if you don’t already have a shop compressor plumbed to that bay, factor that cost into your total project budget.

We’ve seen restoration hobbyists get the lift delivered only to realize their garage was wired for a single 110V outlet and a shop light. Don’t let that be you. A quick call to us or your electrician before delivery day saves a lot of frustration and keeps your install on schedule instead of stalled in the driveway.

Get the Install Done Right the First Time

A lift is only as good as its installation, and this is where DIY assembly videos can lead people astray. Anchoring depth, torque specs, and leveling all matter more on an asymmetric car lift because the arm geometry puts uneven load on the columns compared to a symmetric setup. We’ve been called out to re-anchor lifts that were installed slightly out of level, and it’s always a bigger job to fix after the fact than to get right on day one.
