Why This Shop Chose an Asymmetric Lift Over a Symmetric One

The owner had been running a small trailer and RV service operation near the Iowa-Missouri border for about six years, mostly on jack stands and a borrowed floor jack setup that made every oil change and hitch inspection a two-hour chore. When storage season hit, half the lot filled with campers and enclosed trailers waiting on customers, and there was no clean way to lift anything heavier than a light truck without blocking the whole bay. He called us asking a version of the same question we hear from almost every shop owner in this position: should the arms be symmetrical or asymmetrical?

We walked him through it the way we walk every customer through it. A symmetric configuration centers the vehicle between the columns, which works fine for general repair work but wastes space and makes door clearance tight in a narrow bay. Freight, Unloading, and Forklift Logistics on Delivery Day

Nobody warns first-time lift buyers enough about delivery day, so we do. The lift arrived on a flatbed as a stack of crated columns, arms, and hydraulic components, and the total weight caught the shop’s part-time forklift operator off guard. An asymmetric lift isn’t dramatically heavier than a symmetric one, but the crates are awkward, long, and top-heavy, and you need a forklift rated well above what looks necessary just from eyeballing the boxes. We talk every customer through minimum forklift capacity before the truck ships, because a freight company will not wait around while you scramble for a bigger machine.

This shop had a 5,000 lb capacity forklift on site, which was enough, but the driver still had to reposition the load twice to get it off the trailer safely because the crate shifted during transport. We recommend clearing at least 20 feet of straight-line path from the drop point to the install location before the truck arrives, and having someone on site who has actually operated a forklift under a shifting load, not just someone who drives one occasionally. Model Number and Configuration: What Actually Got Ordered

The shop ended up with a Rotary two-post model built for asymmetric arm swing, chosen specifically because the front arms offered a longer reach for trucks with extended cabs and dual rear wheels, which are common on the trailers-and-hitch side of his business. We steered him away from a three-stage arm configuration he’d seen advertised online, because for his mix of pickups and mid-size trailers, the extra reach wasn’t worth the added arm weight and slower cycle time. Sometimes the flashier spec sheet isn’t the right fit for the actual fleet rolling through your bay.

We also spent time on drive-through clearance, since he was cross-shopping a couple of configurations where one model listed a 96-inch drive-through width and another closer to 103 inches. For a shop parking dual-rear-wheel trucks and towing mirrors between columns, those seven inches mattered more than almost any other number on the spec sheet. We measured his actual bay twice before finalizing the order, because guessing on column spacing is how shops end up with a lift they can’t use the way they intended.

Installing an Asymmetric Lift in a Seasonal Storage Bay

Install day is where an asymmetric lift earns its keep or exposes a bad plan. Our crew anchored the columns according to the concrete rating on site, which in this shop’s case meant a core sample first, because older slabs along the border counties don’t always meet the thickness lifts need. We’ve walked away from installs before the anchors ever went in because the floor wasn’t going to hold, and we’d rather tell a customer that upfront than let a lift settle wrong six months later.

Once the concrete checked out, the columns went in, arms were calibrated for the asymmetric swing, and we ran the full load test with an actual trailer-loaded pickup rather than just an empty truck. That’s a step some installers skip, and it’s the step that tells you whether the arm reach and pad placement actually work for what the shop is really lifting, not just what looks good on paper.

Storing Seasonal Units Without Losing Floor Space

The whole reason this shop wanted the lift in the first place was seasonal storage, not just service work, and an asymmetric lift changes how you use floor space more than most owners expect. Because the vehicle sits offset toward one side, the shop could park a stored trailer directly alongside a raised unit without the two ever competing for the same footprint. That single change let them add roughly 30% more stored units to the same bay footprint compared to how they’d been packing vehicles in before.

We also talked through seasonal load cycles, since a lift that sits loaded with a stored RV for months at a time behaves differently than one cycling several times a day. We recommend backing off full lift height slightly for long-term storage and checking hydraulic fluid levels before the spring thaw rush, when everything on the lot gets pulled down and serviced in a short window.

The First Service Call, Six Months In

True to the pattern we see across most first-year owners, the first service call came right around the six-month mark, not because anything failed, but because the shop wanted a full safety and calibration check before their first busy spring season. We checked cable tension, hydraulic seals, and arm-locking mechanisms, and found exactly what we usually find on a well-installed lift at that stage: minor cable stretch that’s normal on any new install and easily adjusted.

What we didn’t find was anything related to the asymmetric configuration itself acting up differently than a symmetric setup would. The arm geometry that makes an asymmetric lift useful for clearance doesn’t add meaningful extra wear when it’s installed and calibrated correctly from day one. That first service visit is also when we walk owners through their own maintenance calendar for the following year, since a lift running through Iowa winters and heavy seasonal storage cycles needs more frequent attention than one running in a climate-controlled shop.

What We’d Tell Any Shop Considering One

If you’re weighing symmetric against asymmetric for a storage-and-service operation, ask yourself how tight your bay really is and how often you need full door swing next to a raised vehicle. That’s the real question underneath the spec sheet debate, and it’s the same question we get asked in almost every phone call and email about this decision. An asymmetric lift isn’t automatically better, it’s better for a specific layout problem, and the shops that are happiest with theirs a year later are the ones who measured their actual space instead of guessing.
