A dealership service manager in Waukee called us last month with a familiar problem: the shop was quoting an asymmetric lift for a new suspension and shock replacement bay, but nobody had checked whether the overhead clearance and door swing would actually work in the space. That’s the gap between a spec sheet and a real install, and it’s where most lift projects go sideways before they even start. Why Ceiling Height Math Comes First for Suspension Work

Suspension and shock replacement work means a vehicle sitting at full extension for extended periods, often with the tech running the lift close to its maximum rise to get clearance for spring compressors and strut tools. That means the overall height of an asymmetric lift — post height plus the vehicle’s height at full lift — has to clear the ceiling with real margin, not just barely fit. We measure from finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction: sprinkler heads, HVAC ductwork, light fixtures, and structural beams, not just the roof deck.

A typical two-post asymmetric lift with a two-stage or three-stage arm setup runs a post height in the 128 to 141 inch range depending on tonnage and brand, and most dealership bays we work in have somewhere between 12 and 16 feet of clear height. That sounds like plenty until you add a raised pickup at full lift height plus antenna or roof rack clearance. We’ve had to walk dealership service managers back from a taller lift model more than once because the suspension bay ceiling had ductwork dropping the usable clearance by a foot or more. Measuring the real obstruction height before ordering is non-negotiable, and it’s the first thing we do on every Waukee-area site visit.

Door Swing: The Reason Asymmetric Arms Exist

The entire point of an asymmetric lift is arm geometry that lets vehicle doors open fully without hitting the columns. On a suspension and shock bay, techs are in and out of the driver’s seat constantly — checking ride height, cycling the suspension, moving the vehicle for alignment checks. If the front arms are too long or positioned too far forward, the door swings into the post and the tech either can’t open it fully or has to work around a pinch point every single cycle.

We had a customer ask us directly whether the arms on a lift we quoted were symmetrical or asymmetrical, and it’s the right question every time, because the answer determines door clearance geometry more than almost any other spec. On an asymmetric configuration, the front arms typically run shorter and swing out at a wider angle than the rear arms, shifting the vehicle’s balance point rearward on the lift and opening up space at the A-pillar for the door to swing clear. For a dealership doing high-volume shock and strut work, that clearance isn’t a comfort feature — it’s a repetitive strain and cycle time issue that adds up across dozens of vehicles a week.

Drive-Through Width and Column Spacing

Ceiling height gets the attention, but drive-through width between the columns matters just as much for suspension work, where techs need room to maneuver jack stands, spring compressors, and rolling carts around the vehicle. We’ve seen asymmetric lift models with drive-through clearances ranging from around 96 inches on a narrower configuration up to 103 inches or more on wider commercial models, and that difference determines whether a technician can walk a cart around a full-size truck without squeezing past a column.

For a Waukee dealership handling a mix of passenger cars and larger trucks or SUVs for suspension work, we generally recommend erring toward the wider drive-through spacing if the bay allows it, because retrofitting column spacing later means moving anchor bolts and possibly the whole lift. Column spacing also interacts with door swing — a lift with generous drive-through width but poor arm geometry can still leave a door hitting a column if the arms aren’t asymmetric in the right proportion for the vehicle. We always cross-check drive-through width against the dealership’s actual vehicle lineup, not just a generic sedan, before finalizing a quote.

Arm Reach and Vehicle Lift Points for Shock Work

Shock and strut replacement requires precise arm placement under factory lift points, and asymmetric arms need enough reach and rotation to reach those points on everything from a compact sedan to a three-quarter-ton pickup without repositioning the vehicle. Front arm reach on most asymmetric lifts we install runs from about 40 inches retracted up to 70-plus inches extended, with rear arms often extending slightly further to compensate for wheelbase differences.

When a dealership service bay handles a wide range of makes and models, that reach range is what actually determines whether the asymmetric lift earns its keep on suspension work specifically. We’ve walked technicians through arm placement on new installs where the three-stage arm design meant they never had to fight for a lift point on a low-clearance sports coupe or a lifted pickup on the same lift, same day. That flexibility is the practical payoff of asymmetric arm design for a shop that can’t dedicate one lift per vehicle type, which describes almost every dealership service department we’ve worked with in central Iowa.

Real Bay Dimensions from Recent Waukee-Area Installs

On a recent site visit for a service bay expansion, we measured a clear ceiling height of just over 14 feet after accounting for HVAC trunk lines, which comfortably fit a two-stage asymmetric lift rated for standard passenger and light truck work with margin to spare at full rise. In another bay with lower overhead due to a mezzanine storage area above, we had to recommend a lower-profile asymmetric configuration and adjust the arm stage count to keep total lift height under the available clearance.
