That offset opens a wider, unobstructed path along the driver’s side — exactly where a technician needs to stand to pull an oil pan, work a gasket scraper, or run a torque wrench on the pan bolts without ducking under a column. On a symmetrical lift, the arms are equal length front and rear, which centers the car evenly between the posts but leaves less swing-through space for the door to open fully on either side.

For pan gasket work specifically, that difference matters more than most people expect. We’ve measured door swing on multiple third-generation family shops in this corridor, and the asymmetrical setup consistently gives technicians four to six more inches of unobstructed reach to the pan area. That’s the difference between resting a drain pan comfortably on a low stool versus contorting around a column. A typical Rotary two-post asymmetrical lift runs front arms around 32 to 40 inches and rear arms around 42 to 50 inches, depending on the model and column width. Compare that to a symmetrical Challenger unit where both front and rear arms sit closer to 38 to 44 inches evenly matched. Those numbers sound small until you’re trying to fit a lift into a bay that was originally built for a lube rack forty years ago — which describes a lot of the buildings we work in throughout eastern Iowa and western Illinois.

Column spacing is the other number that trips people up. Most asymmetrical two-post lifts need 10 to 12 feet of clear width between columns for the arms to reach and swing without binding on a truck’s frame rail. We measure this on-site before recommending a specific asymmetrical car lift model because older buildings in this corridor often have support posts or low steel that a spec sheet won’t warn you about.

Bay Workflow: Where the Technician Actually Stands

Walk into any well-run family garage doing pan gasket work all day, and you’ll notice the good ones have already figured out workflow without calling it that. The tech rolls the drain pan in from one side, the tool cart sits on the other, and there’s a clear path to the parts washer. An asymmetrical car lift supports that rhythm because the offset arm geometry naturally creates a wider open lane on one side of the vehicle — usually the side you’d choose for your rolling tool cart and drain pan station.

Shops that see everything from sedans to one-ton trucks face a tougher call. A symmetrical lift centers weight evenly regardless of vehicle length, which some techs prefer for heavier pickups. An asymmetrical car lift, on the other hand, is built around passenger car and light truck geometry and shines when your daily work is oil changes, gasket replacement, and general underside service rather than heavy-duty commercial trucks.

We’ve had customers ask for both configurations in the same shop — one bay symmetrical for the big stuff, one bay asymmetrical for quick-turn passenger car work. If your bay mix leans toward daily maintenance rather than heavy fleet, the asymmetrical car lift is almost always the better long-term investment for throughput.

Anchoring and Floor Requirements in Older Iowa-Illinois Buildings

A lot of the third-generation shops we serve are working out of buildings poured decades before anyone thought about two-post lift anchoring specs. Concrete needs to be a minimum of 4 inches thick with adequate PSI rating, and we test every floor before installing an asymmetrical car lift because the columns concentrate load differently than a four-post or scissor design.

We’ve turned away installs — politely — when the floor wasn’t going to hold up, and recommended a mobile column lift or four-post as a safer alternative instead. It’s not the sale we want to make, but it’s the honest one.
