What Makes a Lift Asymmetrical

The term describes how the vehicle sits relative to the two columns. On a symmetrical lift, the columns are directly opposite each other and the vehicle centers between them. On an asymmetrical car lift, the columns are offset — typically a rough 30/70 split — so the vehicle shifts forward and to one side, opening up space around the front doors and front wheel wells.

For a body shop doing collision repair, alignment checks, or suspension work, that shifted position gives techs more room to maneuver around the front end without stepping around a column every time. It’s a small geometric change that adds up to real time savings across a full day of suspension and shock replacement jobs, especially on vehicles where you’re accessing strut towers, sway bar links, and control arm bushings repeatedly through the day.

Suspension and Shock Work: Where Arm Geometry Actually Matters

Shock and strut replacement requires clean access to the top mount, the lower control arm, and often the sway bar end link — all in a tight cluster near the front wheel well. On a symmetrical lift, the column can sit close enough to that work zone that techs end up contorting to get a spring compressor or impact gun positioned correctly.

An asymmetrical car lift solves this by giving the front end more open space. We’ve watched techs shave real minutes off repeat suspension jobs simply because they’re not fighting the column for elbow room. For a body shop running multiple suspension and shock jobs per day — after collision repairs, insurance work, or fleet maintenance contracts — those minutes compound into meaningful throughput gains over a month. It’s one of the most underrated reasons shops upgrade from an older symmetrical bay.

Concrete Slab Thickness: The Non-Negotiable Check

Before we install any lift, asymmetrical or not, we check the slab. This matters even more with asymmetrical arm geometry because the load distribution across the columns isn’t perfectly even — one side often bears more weight depending on vehicle position — so anchor integrity has to be solid on both sides.

For a typical two-post asymmetrical car lift rated for standard passenger vehicles and light trucks, we want a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, ideally poured at least 28 days before install so it’s reached full cure strength. Thinner slabs, or slabs with visible cracking near where anchors would go, are a common reason we delay an install rather than risk anchors pulling loose under load. If your Marion shop is in an older building with a slab poured decades ago for lighter-duty use, this is the first thing to have checked — not after the lift arrives, but before you order it.

Rebar Placement and Why It Trips Up Older Buildings

Rebar placement is the detail most shop owners never think about until an installer hits it with a drill. Older commercial buildings, especially ones converted from other uses, sometimes have rebar mesh set closer to the surface than modern slabs, or spaced in ways that make anchor placement tricky.

We use ground-penetrating checks and drill test holes before committing to final anchor positions, and we’ll shift a lift’s footprint a few inches in either direction if it means avoiding a rebar conflict rather than compromising anchor depth. This is a five-minute check that prevents a much bigger problem later — anchors that don’t seat properly are a safety issue, not just an inconvenience, and it’s not something to guess at on a lift that’s going to be loaded and unloaded daily.

Sizing the Bay for Body Shop Traffic

Body shops move a lot of vehicles through a single bay in a day, and an asymmetrical car lift needs enough clearance on the drive-through side to make that efficient. We size bays based on your actual vehicle mix — if you’re running mostly sedans and crossovers with occasional trucks, the clearance needs are different than a shop that’s primarily working full-size trucks and vans.

We also factor in tool cart placement, air line routing, and where techs will stage parts during a suspension job, because an asymmetrical car lift only delivers its clearance advantage if the surrounding floor space is arranged to take advantage of it. A poorly laid out bay can cancel out the geometry benefit entirely.

New vs. Used for a Working Body Shop

Body shops run lifts hard, all day, every day, which makes used equipment a riskier bet than it might be for a lower-volume shop. We generally steer Marion-area body shops toward new units for main suspension bays, reserving used equipment consideration for secondary or overflow bays where downtime is less costly.

If you do go used, insist on service records and a pre-purchase inspection from a certified installer — cables, arm pins, and hydraulic seals all wear faster under heavy daily use, and an asymmetrical car lift with worn arm pins can develop play that affects positioning accuracy on suspension jobs where precision matters.
