Why Collectors Lean Toward an Asymmetrical Car Lift

When you’re storing more than one vehicle in a garage bay, door swing and walking clearance matter as much as lift capacity. A symmetrical two-post lift centers the arms evenly on both sides of the vehicle, which is great for straight-in-and-out shop work but forces you to open car doors into a narrower gap between posts. An asymmetrical car lift shifts the columns so the front arms are shorter and the rear arms are longer, rotating the vehicle’s balance point toward the rear axle. That geometry lets you swing the front doors wide open without hitting the post, which collectors appreciate when they’re getting in and out of a car repeatedly during detailing, inspection, or just admiring the thing.

We hear this from clients across southeast Iowa constantly — garages built for storage first, wrenching second. An asymmetrical car lift gives you that extra few inches of walk-around room on the driver’s side post, which adds up when you’re maneuvering between two or three stored vehicles in a tight bay. It’s also easier to position a car on the pads correctly the first time, since the arm geometry naturally guides the vehicle’s center of gravity toward where the lift wants it. For a first lift purchase, this is usually the config we steer people toward unless they have a specific reason for symmetrical arms.

Overhead Configuration: What It Means for Your Ceiling

An overhead asymmetrical car lift runs its safety mechanism and crossbar up top, connecting the two columns above the vehicle. This is the more common configuration for two-post lifts because it’s simpler mechanically and often less expensive. The tradeoff is ceiling height — you’ll need enough clearance not just for the lift’s rated lifting height but for the crossbeam itself plus a raised vehicle’s overall height. In a pole barn or older garage with lower trusses, this can be the deciding factor.

We measure ceiling height on every southeast Iowa install before we quote overhead versus baseplate, because guessing wrong here means a lift that physically can’t raise a vehicle to a comfortable working height. Overhead units tend to be more rigid overall since the crossbar ties the whole structure together, which some collectors like for long-term storage lifts where a car might sit raised for weeks at a time. If your building has 12 feet or more of clear height and you’re not planning to add a mezzanine or storage loft later, overhead is usually the simpler, more cost-effective asymmetrical car lift choice.

Baseplate Configuration: Low-Ceiling Garages and Storage Lofts

A baseplate asymmetrical car lift eliminates the overhead crossbar entirely, running its safety and structural connection through the base at floor level instead. This opens up the full ceiling height above the vehicle, which matters if you’ve got a storage loft, ductwork, lighting, or you just want the visual openness of a clear overhead space in a showcase garage. Most of our southeast Iowa collector clients who want to display a raised vehicle prefer baseplate for exactly this reason — nothing blocking the view from any angle.

The tradeoff is floor-level footprint. Baseplate units typically need a slightly wider base pad and a thicker, more heavily reinforced concrete slab underneath, since all the structural forces that used to run through the overhead beam now run through the floor. We always check slab thickness and rebar before recommending baseplate, especially in older pole barns where the concrete was poured for storage weight, not lift anchoring. Get that verified early and a baseplate asymmetrical car lift will outlast the building around it.

The Install Day: What Actually Happens

On install day, our crew shows up with the lift crated, a concrete anchor kit, and a level. First we confirm the pad location relative to your garage door, side walls, and any support columns, because moving a lift six inches after the concrete is drilled is not a fun conversation. We set the base plates, drill and epoxy the anchors, then stand the columns and route hydraulic lines. For an asymmetrical car lift, we also double check that the shorter arms are facing the correct direction — front of vehicle — since that arm orientation is what makes the whole geometry work in your favor.

Most two-post installs take a full day for our crew, sometimes a bit longer if it’s a baseplate unit needing extra slab prep or if we’re running new 220V service to the bay. Before we leave, we cycle the lift empty several times, check the arm restraint pins, and walk you through the locking mechanism and load ratings. We don’t leave a job until the owner has actually raised and lowered a vehicle themselves at least once with us standing there.

Your First Real Job: The Oil Pan Gasket Under Real Conditions

The first genuine test of a new asymmetrical car lift for most collectors isn’t a headline restoration project — it’s something ordinary like an oil pan gasket replacement. You raise the vehicle to chest height, and this is where the asymmetrical geometry actually pays off: the shorter front arms give you a clean, unobstructed path to the pan and oil filter without a support column in your way. On a symmetrical lift, you sometimes find yourself working around the post to reach the same bolts.

Draining the pan, cleaning the mating surface, and torquing a new gasket down evenly is finicky work best done standing comfortably rather than crouched on a creeper. That’s really the whole argument for owning a lift in the first place. We’ve had collector clients tell us that the pan gasket job that used to eat an entire Saturday on jack stands took under two hours once they had proper lift height and arm clearance. It’s a small job, but it’s usually the one that convinces a new owner the investment was worth it.

What We Check at the First Service Interval

Most manufacturers recommend the first service check on a new asymmetrical car lift somewhere around 30 to 90 days of use, and we build that into our install pricing for southeast Iowa customers. We’re checking cable tension and equalization on cable-drive units, hydraulic fluid level, arm pin wear, and that anchor bolts haven’t backed off from initial building settling. This is also when we recheck that the lift is still sitting level — a garage floor can shift slightly in its first year, especially in a newer pole barn.

For a collector who’s only used the lift a handful of times for light jobs like the oil pan gasket work described above, wear at this stage is usually minimal. But we’ve caught anchor bolts that needed a quarter turn and cables that needed minor adjustment on lifts that otherwise seemed fine to the owner. Catching that early is cheap. Catching it three years late after real wear sets in is not. Collectors with taller pole barns and no aesthetic concerns about a crossbar usually go overhead for the simpler install and lower cost. Collectors building a showcase space, especially ones storing multiple vehicles they want visible from every angle, tend to pay the small premium for baseplate.

Either way, the asymmetrical arm geometry itself is the bigger win for most storage-focused collectors compared to symmetrical.
