For someone running a fleet of identical delivery vans, symmetric might still win. Column placement also had to account for a support beam that ran across part of the bay. Rather than force a symmetric footprint that fought the beam location, the asymmetric layout let us shift both columns a few inches without changing the working geometry the mechanic needed for arm reach. Every bay has a quirk like this, whether it’s a floor drain, a support column, or an uneven slab, and it’s worth walking the space with someone who installs lifts regularly before locking in a floor plan on paper alone.

Anchoring Into a Garage Slab Built for Cars, Not Lifts

Home and small-shop garage slabs are usually four inches of concrete poured to hold parked cars, not to anchor a loaded two-post lift swinging a truck eight feet in the air. Before this atlas 2 post car lift went in, we confirmed slab thickness and condition, because anchor bolts are only as strong as the concrete holding them, and a lift is only as safe as its anchors.

In this case the slab held up fine with standard wedge anchors at the specified embedment depth, but we’ve walked into plenty of Iowa garages where the pad was cracked, too thin, or poured over fill dirt that had settled unevenly over the years. When that happens, the right move is a new footing or a slab section poured to spec rather than anchoring into concrete that can’t hold the load. It costs more up front and saves someone a serious injury down the road.

Moving from mobile work to a fixed bay is a big operational shift, and the lift is the centerpiece of that shift. We tell every mobile mechanic the same thing: write down your actual job mix from the last six months before you shop, because that list tells you more about arm style and capacity than any spec sheet does.
