You’re working directly under the engine cradle with your face inches from a component that’s about to drip old oil, and every bolt you break loose puts leverage on a vehicle that’s only supported at two or four points. Choosing Lift Capacity for Your Actual Vehicle Mix

Asymmetric two-post lifts angle the columns so the front arms are shorter and the rear arms longer, opening up the door area for easier entry and better weight distribution toward the vehicle’s center of gravity. For oil pan work specifically, this matters because the front arms need to clear the front subframe and reach the correct lift points without interference from the pan itself. Most modern lifts we sell for this kind of work use an asymmetric configuration for exactly this reason.

Symmetric configurations still have a place in some Des Moines metro shops, particularly where the same bay handles heavy alignment work and needs a very stable, centered lift point for four-wheel alignment racks.
