The first configuration we walked through was a symmetric-arm setup, where all four arms swing out evenly from the columns and the vehicle sits centered between the posts. For a shop primarily doing CV axle and half-shaft replacement on sedans, crossovers, and light vans, symmetric arms are simple, fast to position, and give a technician clean access to both sides of the front subframe at once — useful when you’re pulling axles on both sides during the same job.

The tradeoff is door clearance and cab access. On a symmetric two-post, the columns sit further forward relative to the front doors, which can make it slightly harder to get in and out of a vehicle once it’s raised partway, and it’s not the ideal geometry if your fleet mix leans toward longer-wheelbase vans or trucks. For a shop doing mostly CV axle and half-shaft work on passenger vehicles, though, this is rarely a dealbreaker — the tradeoff mostly matters for shops that also do a lot of interior or electrical work with the vehicle raised and doors open.

Configuration Two: Asymmetric Arms for Mixed Fleets

The second configuration was asymmetric, with the columns offset so the front arms are shorter and the rear arms are longer, positioning the vehicle slightly off-center. A shop running nothing but sedans in a tight, symmetric bay might do just as well with the simpler symmetric arm setup, especially if budget is the deciding factor between two otherwise similar lifts.
