What Overhead vs. Baseplate Actually Means

An overhead configuration ties the two columns of a 2-post lift together with a crossbeam at the top, which is what most people picture when they think of a classic two-post hoist. A baseplate configuration, by contrast, connects the columns through a beam that runs along the floor between them, with no structure up top. Both styles do the same basic job of picking a vehicle up by the frame or pinch welds, but they solve different problems. If your building has low overhead clearance, ductwork, or a second-floor mezzanine running through the bay, the overhead crossbeam might not leave you enough room to fully raise a tall van or a lifted truck.

Baseplate models solve that clearance issue but introduce a different one: something is now running across the floor of your bay, and depending on drive-through clearance you may need to plan how you park around it. For a shop doing engine oil pan gasket work all day, where technicians are constantly walking in and out from both ends of the vehicle, that floor-level beam can actually be a tripping hazard if the bay is tight. Why Ceiling Height Drives the Decision

The single biggest factor in choosing between overhead and baseplate is how much vertical clearance you actually have. Older shop buildings, converted pole barns, and a lot of home garages simply don’t have that kind of clearance, especially once you account for lighting fixtures, HVAC trunk lines, or a garage door track running along the ceiling.

The tradeoff is that baseplate units generally cost a bit more for the same capacity because of the added steel and engineering in that floor-level beam, and some techs find the floor-level obstruction annoying if they’re used to overhead units. We always measure clearance on-site or ask for exact numbers before quoting, because guessing on this one detail is how shops end up with equipment that doesn’t work in their space.

Matching Capacity to Your Actual Work

Body shop work covers a wide range of vehicle weights, from compact sedans in for panel work to heavy-duty trucks needing frame repair, and your atlas 2-post lift needs to be rated for the heaviest vehicle you’ll realistically put on it, not just the average. A common mistake is buying a 9,000-pound lift because that covers 90 percent of the work, then getting stuck when a 3/4-ton diesel truck rolls in for the exact kind of oil pan gasket job that started this whole conversation. We generally recommend building in a capacity cushion above your heaviest expected vehicle rather than cutting it close.

For a general body shop bay handling a mix of cars and light trucks, a 10,000 to 12,000-pound rated lift covers most scenarios without overspending on capacity you’ll never use. Shops that regularly see one-ton trucks, vans, or fleet vehicles should look at 14,000-pound and above ratings instead. Capacity also interacts with arm configuration and reach, since a heavier vehicle with a longer wheelbase needs arms that can extend far enough to find factory-approved lift points without overextending, so we always confirm arm reach against your specific vehicle mix rather than just matching a weight number on a spec sheet.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Arm Layouts

Beyond overhead and baseplate, you’ll also choose between symmetric and asymmetric arm configurations, and this matters as much for oil pan gasket work as the column style does. Symmetric lifts center the vehicle evenly between the columns, which works well for shops running a mix of vehicle types where you don’t want to think about door swing every time a car pulls in. Asymmetric lifts shift the vehicle’s weight distribution so the front is positioned to open doors fully while offering better technician access to the front end.

We see a lot of older shop buildings across western Illinois and Iowa with slabs that were poured decades ago for a different purpose, and not every floor meets the thickness and cure-time requirements a lift manufacturer specifies. Most 2-post lifts need at minimum 4 inches of properly cured concrete without excessive cracking near the anchor points, and baseplate models sometimes have different anchoring patterns than overhead units because of that floor-level beam.

We always ask for slab thickness, age, and any known rebar or in-floor heat lines before finalizing a quote, because retrofitting a bay with new concrete adds real cost and time to a project. If your existing floor doesn’t meet spec, that’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but it does change the installation plan and timeline. This is one of the reasons we push customers toward a real site conversation rather than just emailing over a price on an atlas 2-post lift and calling it done.

Installation Timeline and What to Expect

Once a shop settles on overhead or baseplate and confirms their concrete is up to spec, installation for a 2-post lift typically runs a single day for our crews, assuming clear access and a straightforward anchor pattern. Delivery logistics matter here too — having a forklift on-site to unload the columns and crossbeam saves time and reduces the chance of damage compared to hand-unloading heavy steel components. We coordinate delivery windows around installation dates so equipment isn’t sitting exposed in a bay for weeks before it goes in.
