The hydraulic side of the lift only pumps one column directly; the other column follows through the cable-and-sheave system. The Daily Walk-Around: Thirty Seconds Per Column

On an overhead-style lift the cables are visible through the top of the crossbar with a flashlight; on a baseplate design they run along the floor between the columns and are visible along their length. Replacement Intervals: When to Change Even a Cable That Looks Fine

The industry answer is that cables should be replaced at the manufacturer’s recommended interval or on visual/inspection evidence, whichever comes first. In practice, for a municipal fleet running moderate cycles, we typically recommend cable replacement in the ten-to-twelve-year range as a preventive measure even if the cables still look good, because the internal wire is not fully visible from the outside and cable metallurgy fatigues with age even in the absence of visible wear.
For higher-cycle municipal fleets — a public works shop doing multiple vehicles per lift per day — the interval shortens, and we sometimes recommend inspection semi-annually and preventive replacement in the six-to-eight-year window. This is exactly the kind of interval that pays for itself the first time a cable check finds a strand break you would have missed for another six months. Exhaust and Driveline Access: Cable Load Considerations
Exhaust and driveline work has a specific loading profile that matters for cable life on an atlas 2-post lift. A broken strand on a cable, an unusual noise from a sheave, a slight tilt at top-of-travel, a lock that clicks off-count on one side — any of these justify tagging the lift out and calling for service. An atlas 2-post lift being unavailable for a day while a service tech looks at it is a routine operational inconvenience. A vehicle dropping is a career-ending event and a public news story.
