An atlas 2-post lift is only as good as the electrical circuit feeding it, and we see more EV specialty shops around the Des Moines metro get tripped up on power requirements than almost any other install detail. A shop owner reaches the point of pulling CV axles and half-shafts on EVs all day long, finally decides to add a second bay, orders the lift, and then discovers the panel isn’t ready, the breaker is undersized, or nobody asked whether the unit needs single-phase or three-phase power. Myth: Every Atlas 2-Post Lift Runs on Standard 110V

This is the single biggest misconception we hear on the phone. Most atlas 2-post lift models built for real commercial use, including the units EV shops need for lifting vehicles heavy with battery packs, run on 220-240V single-phase power at minimum. A handful of larger capacity units are available in three-phase configurations, but that’s an option you specify at order time, not something you assume the shop already has. We’ve had shops in the Des Moines metro order a lift, schedule install day, and then realize their building only has 110V service run to that bay because it was previously used for storage.

The fix is simple but has to happen before the lift ships, not after. Call your electrician, tell them the exact model and its rated voltage and amperage from the spec sheet, and have them confirm the panel has capacity and the run to the lift location is sized correctly. For EV specialty shops especially, where CV axle and half-shaft work often happens back-to-back on multiple bays, we recommend dedicating a circuit per lift rather than sharing one large circuit across two posts. It costs a little more upfront and saves you from tripped breakers during your busiest install weeks.

Amperage and Breaker Sizing Nobody Checks Ahead of Time

Voltage is only half the equation. The other half is amperage draw at startup, which spikes higher than running amperage on nearly every hydraulic power unit. We’ve seen shops size a breaker for the running amp draw listed in a spec sheet, only to trip it every time the motor kicks on cold in an Iowa winter. Undersized breakers are the number one electrical complaint we field on service calls for lifts that were installed by someone other than our team.

When you’re speccing an atlas 2-post lift for a shop doing EV axle work, ask your electrician to size the breaker to the manufacturer’s recommended overload protection, not just the nameplate running amps. This matters more in cold garage bays where hydraulic fluid is thicker and the motor works harder to build pressure on the first cycle of the day. It’s a small detail that determines whether your lift works reliably every morning or trips a breaker right as your first EV rolls in for a half-shaft swap.

Phase Confusion: Single-Phase vs Three-Phase in Older Iowa Buildings

A lot of EV specialty shops setting up in the Des Moines metro are moving into older commercial buildings that were never wired for heavy equipment. An atlas 2-post lift with an improperly grounded circuit isn’t just a code violation waiting to be caught during inspection, it’s a real safety hazard in a shop where technicians are standing on concrete near hydraulic fluid and metal lift arms all day.

We always tell EV shop owners to pull a permit and have a licensed electrician sign off on the circuit, even if the shop is small and the inspector rarely visits. Grounding matters even more in shops running sensitive diagnostic equipment near the lift bay, since electrical noise from an improperly grounded lift motor can occasionally interfere with battery diagnostic tools used during EV service.

Site Survey Before You Order, Not After

The mistake we see most often isn’t a wrong answer, it’s no question at all. Shops order the lift, schedule the install, and only then start asking about power. We push every customer, especially EV specialty shops planning CV axle and half-shaft bays, to do a quick site survey first: measure the panel’s remaining capacity, confirm existing circuits nearby, and note ceiling height and floor thickness while you’re at it. A proper survey takes twenty minutes and saves weeks of delay. What Happens If You Install First and Wire Later

Once the lift is bolted down and the arms are in place, running conduit to the power unit becomes more awkward, especially in tight EV bays where floor space is already limited by charging equipment or diagnostic carts.

It’s far more efficient to have your electrician rough in the circuit before or during the mechanical install, so our crew can make the final connection and test the lift through a full cycle before we leave. That single test cycle catches problems immediately, whether it’s a breaker that trips under load or a phase mismatch nobody caught on paper, instead of a technician discovering it mid-repair on a customer’s vehicle weeks later.

Getting the Spec Sheet Right Before You Call Your Electrician

Every atlas 2-post lift ships with a documented voltage, amperage, and phase requirement, and that spec sheet should be the first thing you hand your electrician, not the last. For EV specialty shops, we also recommend flagging any planned future expansion, like a second bay or a battery service station, so the electrician can size the panel with room to grow rather than maxing it out on the first lift. Getting this right the first time means your shop isn’t stuck calling an electrician back six months later to upsize a panel that should have been sized correctly from day one.
