In practice, both configurations need a minimum four inches of good, dry, unreinforced concrete at 3,000 PSI or better. Six inches is a lot more comfortable if you are pouring new, and we routinely recommend that for shops building out.
What actually varies more is anchor pattern and column base geometry. We core-drill and set anchors to the manufacturer’s spec sheet every time, and we torque test after cure. If a customer sends us a floor scan showing rebar too close to a column base, we relocate the column before the drill bit hits steel. That step alone has saved a couple of Iowa City shops from cracked slabs and pulled anchors during their first year of use.
Arm Swing, Drive-Through Width, and Bay Flow
An atlas 2-post lift with asymmetric column rotation typically opens between ninety and one hundred four inches at the drive-through.
