A heavy-duty truck shop owner on the Iowa-Missouri border called us about an atlas 2-post lift specifically to walk through the overhead versus baseplate decision. His work is exhaust and driveline access on medium-duty trucks — the kind of job where crossbar clearance and above-vehicle clearance both matter a lot. His question came with a hard budget, so this article is a full cost breakdown for both configurations along with the honest tradeoff between the two for his kind of work.

What overhead and baseplate actually mean
The two configurations refer to where the safety crossbar between the two columns sits. Overhead — sometimes called clear-floor — puts the crossbar at the top, roughly 10 to 12 feet up in the air, tying the columns together above the vehicle. Baseplate puts the crossbar at the floor between the columns, tying them together at the bottom. Both configurations meet the same safety standard and both are ALI-certifiable. The tradeoff is not about safety — it is about workflow. Overhead keeps the floor clean and forces you to have adequate ceiling height. Baseplate keeps the ceiling clean and forces you to walk over a crossbar. Change your mind after install and you are in for a full reconfiguration — not impossible, but not cheap. Pick the right one going in.
Ceiling clearance requirements for overhead
Overhead configurations need real ceiling height — 12 feet minimum for a residential-capacity lift, 14 feet for a heavy-duty 14K lifting a tall commercial truck cab. Iowa-Missouri border shops are often in older commercial buildings where the ceiling drops at the eave and rises at the ridge, and the eave measurement is what matters if your columns sit inboard of the ridge line. Measure at each column position. On the atlas 2-post lift 14K model, the overhead crossbar sits high enough that a medium-duty truck cab needs the ridge-line clearance to lift a Class 6 chassis to full height with a cab attached. If your ceiling is under 12 feet at the column positions, overhead is off the table and baseplate is the answer. Baseplate workflow — the crossbar tradeoff
Baseplate configurations put a steel crossbar at the floor between the columns. You walk over it. You roll floor jacks over it. You push tool carts over it. For a truck shop doing exhaust and driveline work — jobs where a floor jack and a transmission jack are constantly moving in and out — the baseplate crossbar is a real friction point. The tradeoff is that baseplate saves you the ceiling-height requirement, which for a lot of Iowa-Missouri border shops in older buildings is the deciding factor. On an atlas 2-post lift baseplate configuration, the crossbar profile is low and rounded, so it is not a trip hazard, but it is a rolling-cart hazard. Some shops ramp the crossbar with steel plate on either side to smooth cart rolling; some just get used to lifting the front of the cart over. Either way, it is a factor you feel every day, and it matters more in a high-cycle bay than in a low-cycle bay.
Cost breakdown — overhead vs. baseplate
Purchase price on an atlas 2-post lift is usually within a few hundred dollars between the overhead and baseplate configurations at the same capacity, sometimes identical. The real cost difference is in install and site prep. Overhead install requires the crossbar to be lifted into place, which sometimes needs a lift or a chain-hoist rigged temporarily. Baseplate install is quicker on labor because the crossbar sits at the floor and does not need overhead rigging. Anchor material is roughly the same. Freight is roughly the same. Where cost sneaks in on a baseplate install is if you decide to ramp the crossbar with steel plate — a modest material and welding cost. Overhead install cost sneaks in if the ceiling has beam obstructions and the columns need to shift inboard by six inches to clear a rafter. Both are manageable and both come out in the wash of a properly-scoped install quote.
Exhaust access on an overhead vs. baseplate lift
Exhaust work on a medium-duty truck is done under the vehicle, and above-vehicle clearance rarely matters until you are dropping the exhaust with a chain hoist. On overhead configurations, that chain hoist has to rig around the crossbar, which is a solvable problem but not a free one. On baseplate configurations, the ceiling above the vehicle is unobstructed and you can rig a hoist wherever the exhaust drop is easiest. That is the case where baseplate wins on workflow for exhaust work. Countering that — baseplate puts a crossbar right where a floor-mounted exhaust dolly wants to sit, which is annoying if you use a dolly to move exhaust pipe sections in and out. Net-net, for exhaust access on a truck shop bay, we lean slightly to baseplate if the ceiling is tight, and slightly to overhead if the ceiling is generous. Neither is clearly better on this specific job.
Driveline access on an overhead vs. baseplate lift
Driveline work — pulling a drive shaft, servicing U-joints, dropping a transfer case — needs a lot of floor real estate under the vehicle for tools and body position. Overhead configurations keep that floor space clean, and for driveline work that is a real advantage. You are dragging a transmission jack in, positioning it under the case, cycling a drift punch on U-joint caps, and swapping in a new joint. All of that is happening on the floor. Baseplate crossbars in that workflow are actively in the way. If your truck shop’s core work leans heavier on driveline than on exhaust, an overhead atlas 2-post lift is the honest recommendation as long as your ceiling can support it. For a shop right on the Iowa-Missouri border where a lot of the old commercial buildings have shorter ceilings, the honest answer is often that you have to make baseplate work — and once you build the workflow around it, you stop noticing the crossbar.
