We’d rather find that out over the phone during the site survey than discover it the morning of install with a crew standing around. Send us photos of your bay, a tape-measure reading of clear height, and a rough guess on slab age, and we can usually flag problems before they cost you a delayed install day.
Bay Width and Column Spacing for Transmission Work
Transmission and drivetrain work often means keeping a transmission jack, a rolling cart of tools, and sometimes a second technician all working underneath the vehicle at once. That means column spacing on your atlas 2-post lift needs breathing room, not just enough to clear the widest vehicle you service. We generally recommend a few extra inches of clearance beyond the minimum vehicle width spec if your bay allows it, specifically because transmission work involves more foot traffic under the car than a basic tire change.
We also look at where the columns land relative to your existing air lines, welding curtains, and parts washers. A body shop bay is rarely an empty box — it’s got infrastructure already in it, and an atlas 2-post lift installed without accounting for that infrastructure creates daily friction for the technician using it. For a body shop specifically, we also factor in whether the bay doubles as a paint prep or frame area later. An overhead atlas 2-post lift gives a cleaner sightline for spraying or detail work directly under the vehicle, since there’s no beam crossing your field of view. If your ceiling height supports it and you’re not tight on ceiling-mounted equipment, overhead is usually our default recommendation for mixed-use body shop bays.
Electrical, Air, and Anchor Prep Before We Arrive
Most Atlas two-post models run on standard 220V single-phase power, but we always confirm voltage and amperage before install day rather than assume. If your shop’s electrical panel is already maxed out running welders, compressors, and spray booth equipment, you may need an electrician to run a dedicated circuit before we can commission the lift. This is one of the most common install-day delays we see, and it’s entirely avoidable with a five-minute panel check beforehand.
Anchor prep is the other piece. We ask that the install area be swept clear, free of oil staining that would interfere with epoxy anchor adhesion, and ideally cleared of any parked vehicles for the day. If your slab is newer than 28 days, hold off — uncured concrete won’t hold anchor torque specs and we’ll have to reschedule. None of this is complicated, but it’s the difference between a two-hour install and a half-day one.
Rated Capacity and Vehicle Mix Planning
Foremen sometimes under-buy on capacity because they’re thinking about today’s vehicle mix instead of next year’s. If your shop occasionally takes in a heavier 3/4-ton truck for drivetrain work, buying an atlas 2-post lift rated only for the sedans and light trucks you see most often will bite you the first time a heavier vehicle rolls in. We’d rather spec a slightly higher capacity now than have a foreman calling us in six months asking about an upgrade.
We also talk through arm reach and pad configuration, since transmission and drivetrain work often needs a wider stance than a basic oil-change lift. Drop-end arms and adjustable pads that account for frame rails and pinch welds on modern unibody vehicles matter more in body shop settings than they do in a quick-lube bay, and it’s worth spending the extra few minutes during the quote conversation getting this right.
Scheduling the Install Around Shop Downtime
Every body shop we work with has a slow day or a lighter week somewhere in their schedule, and that’s the day to book an install, not a random Tuesday when three cars are already up on jack stands. We ask shops to plan for a full day even though most installs run faster, because unexpected anchor or electrical issues can extend the timeline and you don’t want a half-finished bay blocking other work.
