An atlas 2-post lift can turn a body shop’s back bay into a real restoration station overnight, but only if the site is ready before it shows up on the truck. We’ve walked into more than a few Iowa-Illinois corridor shops where the lift was the easy part and the concrete, ceiling height, or bay clearance turned into the real project. Why Site Survey Matters More for Body Shops

Restoration and metal work bays take a beating that a typical tire shop bay never sees. Frames get stripped, panels get cut, and vehicles sit on the rack for days at a time instead of twenty minutes. That means the anchoring, the floor condition, and the column spacing on your atlas 2-post lift need to hold up under sustained load, not just quick in-and-out lifts. We ask about your heaviest project vehicle up front — a rusted-out truck frame with a new engine sitting in the bed weighs more than the spec sheet assumes, and we’d rather size the lift correctly than have a foreman call us six months in wondering why the arms feel undersized.

We also look at how the bay gets used day to day. If you’re doing frame work, you may need extra clearance for cutting torches or spreader tools near the columns, which changes where we recommend placing the lift relative to your wall and adjacent bays. A body shop foreman we work with in the corridor originally wanted the lift dead center in a shared bay, but once we mapped out door swing, tool cart paths, and welding cable runs, we shifted the columns two feet over and saved him a daily headache. That’s the kind of detail a phone quote misses and a site survey catches.

Floor and Slab Requirements Before Delivery

Every atlas 2-post lift install starts with the floor, and this is where most delays happen. We’re looking for a minimum slab thickness, typically 4 inches of unreinforced concrete rated at a certain PSI, though older Iowa-Illinois corridor shop buildings sometimes have thinner or cracked slabs that need attention first. Rebar is fine in most cases, but we need to know it’s there before we core anchor holes, not after we hit steel three inches down. If your shop was built decades ago and the slab has patch work or visible cracking near where the columns will sit, tell us before we schedule the crew.

We also check for a control joint running through the bay, since anchors set too close to a joint won’t hold rated capacity long-term. In a handful of jobs we’ve had to have a customer pour a new pad section before we could proceed, and that’s not something you want to discover the morning the lift is scheduled to arrive on a forklift. A five-minute phone call or a couple of photos of your bay floor before delivery saves everyone a wasted trip.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

Restoration shops often have older buildings with lower trusses, ductwork, or overhead doors that eat into usable height. We measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction directly above where the lift will sit, not just the peak ceiling height, because that low duct run six feet to the side of centerline doesn’t matter — the one directly overhead does. An atlas 2-post lift raising a full-size truck to comfortable working height needs real clearance, and we’ve had to recommend a lower-profile arm configuration or a baseplate model instead of an overhead-style unit specifically because of duct or sprinkler line clearance in older corridor buildings.

This matters even more for two-post units with an overhead beam versus baseplate designs. If your bay has sprinkler heads at a certain height, code may restrict how close the lift’s highest point of travel can get, and we factor that into the model recommendation before you buy, not after installation day when the crew is standing there with a lift that technically can’t reach full height safely in that spot.

Bay Width and Column Spacing

Getting the width right is the difference between a lift that works for every vehicle in your shop and one that only works for sedans. We ask what the widest vehicle you service looks like — dually trucks, extended mirrors, and wide fender flares on custom builds all change how much clearance you need between columns and adjacent walls or equipment. For restoration work specifically, we also factor in door swing on both driver and passenger sides, since techs need to get in and out repeatedly while the vehicle’s up in the air.

We’ve measured bays that looked plenty wide on paper but had a support column, a parts washer, or a welding cart permanently occupying floor space that wasn’t accounted for. A body shop foreman doing frame and metal work needs room to walk completely around the vehicle at full lift height, and that’s a different clearance requirement than a quick-lube bay doing oil changes. We map this out during the survey so the atlas 2-post lift you order actually fits the working style of your shop, not just the empty square footage.

Electrical and Power Requirements

Two-post lifts need a dedicated circuit, and the voltage and amperage requirements vary by model and motor size. Older shop buildings in the corridor sometimes have electrical panels that are already maxed out, especially if welders, compressors, and paint booth equipment are all pulling from the same service. We ask about your existing panel capacity during the survey so you’re not surprised by an electrician bill on top of the lift cost.

We also talk through where the power drop needs to land relative to the lift’s control box location, since running conduit after the lift is bolted down is more expensive and more disruptive than running it beforehand. If you’re doing a full bay renovation alongside the lift install, this is the moment to coordinate electrical work so it’s all done in one pass instead of two separate visits from two separate contractors.

Delivery Access and Unloading Logistics

Atlas 2-post lifts ship heavy, and getting the columns and crossbeam off the truck and into position requires either a forklift or a lift gate plus pallet jack, depending on your dock setup. We ask about overhead door height, driveway grade, and whether you have equipment on-site to unload, because a shop without a forklift needs us to bring one or coordinate delivery differently than a shop that already has material handling equipment.

We’ve had corridor deliveries delayed because a shop’s overhead door was a foot too short for the delivery truck’s box height, or because a gravel lot turned muddy the week of delivery and a loaded forklift couldn’t get traction. None of that is complicated to plan around once we know about it in advance — it only becomes a problem when nobody mentions it until the truck is already in the parking lot.

What Happens on Install Day

Once the site survey is done and the prep work is handled, install day itself moves fast. Our crew sets the columns, checks them plumb, anchors to the slab, runs the crossbeam, and installs the arms and safety locks before doing a full function test with a vehicle on the lift. For an atlas 2-post lift going into a restoration bay, we also walk the foreman through arm positioning for the vehicle types they service most, since frame contact points on trucks differ from sedans and getting familiar with adjustment before the first real job saves time later.

We finish every install with a safety walkthrough covering lock engagement, arm restraint pins, and the overhead shutoff bar if the model has one. For shops doing sustained restoration and metal work, we also recommend a maintenance schedule for cable and pulley inspection, since these bays put more hours on a lift than a typical service bay might in the same calendar year. Getting that routine established from day one keeps the lift running safely for years.
