Start With Your Heaviest Vehicle, Not the Average One

Every decision tree for an atlas 2-post lift has to start with the same question: what’s the heaviest thing you’ll ever roll onto it? Restoration shops tend to underestimate this because most day-to-day work is lighter sedans and trucks for tire rotation and wheel work, but then a customer shows up with a loaded dually or a vintage truck with a full frame and heavy steel panels still attached, and suddenly your 9,000 lb lift is maxed out. We tell every shop owner to size two capacity tiers above their “typical” car, not their heaviest one — because restoration work has a way of bringing in outliers.

Atlas builds several capacity classes, and the jump from a 9,000 lb model to a 10,000 or 12,000 lb model is usually a smaller price difference than people expect, especially once you factor in installation. If your shop occasionally handles heavier trucks or SUVs with aftermarket armor, box work, or long-term project vehicles sitting up on the arms for weeks, that extra headroom protects your investment and your warranty. Buying based on the average car in your bay is the single most common mistake we see, and it’s the first branch in this decision tree for a reason.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric Columns for Wheel and Tire Work

Once capacity is settled, the next fork is symmetric versus asymmetric arm configuration, and this matters more for tire rotation and wheel work than most shop owners realize. A symmetric atlas 2-post lift centers the vehicle between the columns, which is great for general service and restoration where you need even weight distribution on both arms while doing extended metal work. Asymmetric configurations swing the front arms toward the columns slightly, opening up the door for easier entry and exit — helpful if you’re constantly hopping in and out of the vehicle to check ride height or torque lug nuts.

For pure wheel and tire work, we usually recommend symmetric setups because you’re not getting in and out of the cab constantly, you’re walking around the car checking each corner. But if your shop does a mix — some quick tire jobs and some longer restoration projects where techs are in and out of the vehicle all day — an asymmetric configuration might save you real time over a year of use. It’s worth test-standing in a showroom unit if you can, because the difference is subtle on paper but noticeable in daily use.

Height and Overhead Clearance in Older Shop Buildings

A lot of the buildings along the Iowa-Missouri border that house restoration shops were built decades before anyone thought about lift clearance, and that changes which atlas 2-post lift models are even on the table. Overhead lifts need real ceiling height — often 12 feet or more depending on the model — and if your shop has exposed rafters, ductwork, or a low truss line, that rules out overhead configurations immediately. Baseplate models solve this because the hydraulic and cable routing runs along the floor instead of overhead, letting you work in buildings with as little as 10 to 11 feet of clearance.

We’ve measured plenty of century-old shop buildings where the ceiling height varies by a foot or more from one end of the bay to the other because the original construction wasn’t perfectly level. Before you fall in love with a specific model number, have us or another qualified installer come measure your actual clearance at the spot where the lift will sit, not just a rough guess from the doorway. This step alone eliminates half the models on a typical spec sheet and narrows the decision tree fast.

Floor Thickness and Anchoring Requirements

Every atlas 2-post lift bolts down into concrete, and the anchoring requirements are non-negotiable — this isn’t a spot where you can cut corners to save money. Most models call for a minimum slab thickness, commonly 4 to 6 inches of solid, crack-free concrete without rebar interference at the anchor points. Older restoration shop buildings sometimes have thinner slabs poured decades ago for lighter use, and if that’s your situation, you may need a concrete pad poured specifically for the lift before installation can happen.

We always core-check or at minimum visually inspect the slab before quoting installation, because finding out about a thin floor after the lift arrives on a truck creates delays nobody wants. If your existing slab won’t support the anchoring spec for the capacity you need, it’s sometimes cheaper in the long run to pour a proper 6-inch pad in one bay than to downgrade your lift’s capacity just to match a weak floor. This is one of those decision points where the concrete, not the lift brand, ends up dictating your final model choice.

Arm Length and Reach for Longer Wheelbase Vehicles

Restoration shops near the border often work on trucks, vans, and full-frame classics with longer wheelbases than the average passenger car, and arm reach becomes a real limiting factor if you don’t check it up front. Standard arms on many two-post configurations reach a certain distance from the column, and if your typical vehicle has factory-installed rocker guards, running boards, or aftermarket lift kits, the standard pad placement might not line up with the manufacturer’s recommended lift points.

Some atlas 2-post lift models offer extended or drop-end arms specifically to handle these longer and taller vehicles without forcing you to compromise on where the pads actually contact the frame. If you’re regularly lifting anything longer than a standard extended-cab pickup, ask about arm reach specs before you commit to a model, because retrofitting longer arms after the fact is rarely as clean as ordering the right configuration from the start.

Comparing Warranty and Parts Availability Across Models

Every spec sheet lists warranty terms, but the real question for a working restoration shop is how fast you can get a replacement part when something wears out — because a two-post lift that’s down for two weeks waiting on a cylinder is a bay you can’t bill out. Most shops along the Iowa-Missouri border end up landing on a mid-capacity, baseplate-configured model because their buildings have moderate ceiling height and their work mixes daily tire and wheel jobs with occasional heavier restoration projects.
