Myth: You Can Order the Lift Before You Measure the Bay

The single biggest mistake we see European specialty shops make is buying an atlas 4 post car lift based on price or capacity alone, without first measuring the actual bay it’s going into. BMW, Audi, and Mercedes work often means longer wheelbases and wider track widths than the average domestic sedan, and if you don’t confirm runway width and overall lift footprint against your bay dimensions, you end up with a unit that technically fits but leaves no room to open doors or roll a jack around it.

We ask every shop the same three questions before we quote: how wide is the bay, how deep is it, and what’s the ceiling height including any HVAC ductwork or sprinkler heads. A shop doing wheel bearing service also needs enough clearance to get a floor jack and stands under the vehicle once it’s up on the runways, which means the lift’s runway width and jack clearance matter as much as raw square footage. Measure twice, quote once — that’s the rule we hold every install to, and it’s the difference between a smooth build-out and a lift that gets returned or resold six months later.

Myth: Any Concrete Slab Will Hold a 4-Post Lift

Plenty of shop owners assume that because a 4-post lift distributes weight across four columns instead of two, the concrete requirements are looser than a 2-post. That’s backwards thinking for a specialty shop doing wheel bearing service, where a technician may be standing on the runway or working from underneath with the vehicle at full height for extended periods. Sequencing: Electrical and Air Before Anything Else

Sequence it the other way: map every piece of equipment you plan to run in that bay over the next three years, size the electrical service for all of it, then bring in the lift. The same logic applies to compressed air lines if you’re running pneumatic tools for wheel bearing service — stub in the air drop before the lift footprint is finalized so you’re not drilling around columns later.

Ramp and Runway Configuration for Low European Cars

European sports cars and lowered daily drivers are notorious for scraping ramps that were designed with pickup trucks in mind. When we spec an atlas 4 post car lift for a shop that services lower European vehicles, we pay close attention to approach angle and ramp length, and we frequently recommend extended or low-profile ramp options rather than the standard package.

Get the ramp spec locked in before you finalize the concrete layout and floor markings, not after. Rolling Jacks, Casters, and Storage vs. Service Use

If your shop is doing real technician work under the vehicle, you’ll want rolling jacks or a sliding jack tray so a tech can lift a wheel off the runway without a separate floor jack fighting for space underneath.

We spec this differently for every shop depending on whether the bay is primarily a service bay or a storage/overflow bay. Build-out sequencing should include lighting placement planned around where the lift columns will sit, not as an afterthought. We’ve walked into shops where overhead lighting was installed before the atlas 4 post car lift went in, and the columns ended up casting shadows directly across the work area.

Plan your lighting fixtures after you know your final column placement, and consider supplemental task lighting mounted to the lift itself or on adjustable stands, since European undercarriage work frequently requires close inspection of components that standard shop lighting doesn’t illuminate well. This is a small detail that gets skipped constantly, and it’s one of the cheapest fixes if you sequence it correctly.

Getting the Install Timeline Right

The final piece of sequencing is the install itself. We coordinate delivery, concrete inspection, electrical rough-in, and final lift placement as a sequence, not a single event, and we tell every European specialty shop the same thing: don’t schedule your grand reopening around a lift delivery date until the site prep is fully verified.
