An auto home lift purchase is more than the sticker on the crate, and any quick-lube franchise operator in the Des Moines metro who has run the numbers can tell you exactly why. We recently walked a two-bay operator through his full cost picture before he committed to a second auto home lift for his newer store off the interstate. The lift makes sense for CV axle and half-shaft work, but only if you look at the full cost, not the highlighted price. Here is the whole stack, in the order the money actually leaves your account.

The unit itself, and how brand tier changes the number
For a shop-grade auto home lift rated at 10,000 pounds, the bare unit price runs in a broad middle tier for the mainstream brands we carry, with a step up for the heavier commercial two-post units and a step down for lighter-duty home models. Rotary and Challenger commercial units sit in the higher middle. BendPak and Atlas home units sit in the lower middle. All four brands are certified. For a franchise operator doing CV axle work under warranty conditions, we push toward the commercial tier because the duty cycle demands the arms and locks that come standard on those platforms. The Des Moines operator we worked with went commercial. The difference in bare lift cost between commercial and home-grade at 10K capacity was, roughly, a third of the lift’s total price. That extra third bought him a lock ladder rated for shop duty and an arm-restraint system that resets under load; both matter when your techs are cycling the lift more than 20 times a day.

For a franchise store with a curb and no dock, always call us and take the direct truck; the residential liftgate upcharge on a lift crate is real, and forklift access at the store determines whether you pay it. A quick-lube tech doing the same job on jack stands takes at least twice as long and cannot rotate the vehicle for the pass side without repositioning. At his labor rate, one CV job per week on the new lift pays the monthly lift payment. Two CV jobs per week pays the lift plus the electricity plus a healthy margin. He runs closer to five per week between the two stores. This is why we do not recommend the cheapest lift you can buy; we recommend the lift that supports the work you are actually bidding, and let the volume of that work carry the price.
