An auto home lift model comparison for a Cedar Rapids third-generation family shop turned into a two-week technical exercise because the owner refused to buy on brand name alone. He wanted every dimension, every capacity number, and every duty-cycle rating side by side, then a plain-English recommendation. General daily maintenance was his work profile: oil changes, brakes, tires, batteries, and the occasional exhaust job. The auto home lift he ultimately bought was not the model he assumed he would buy going in. Here is the spec sheet we walked him through and the reasoning behind each column.

The four candidate models on the table

We compared four common two-post auto home lift models sized between 9,000 and 12,000 pounds: a Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric 10K, a Challenger CL10 asymmetric 10K, a BendPak XPR-10AS 10K, and a Rotary SPOA12 12K asymmetric for headroom on the capacity side. All four are ALI/ETL certified. All four use the standard 141 inch column center dimension. The four models cover the mainstream range of what a Cedar Rapids family shop would realistically consider. We did not include home-hobbyist-tier lifts because the duty cycle on daily maintenance work exceeds what those platforms are rated for. This shop cycles 15 to 25 times a day. The candidates all handle that duty rating.

Overall height and clearance at full lift

Column height is where auto home lift models diverge most obviously. The Rotary SPOA10 measures 11 feet 6 inches at the column top. The Challenger CL10 comes in at 11 feet 4 inches. The BendPak XPR-10AS at 11 feet 5 inches. The Rotary SPOA12 grows to 11 feet 10 inches because the column is heavier-wall and slightly taller. Add overhead crossbar hose loop of 1.5 to 2 inches on the overhead versions of any of these. In a Cedar Rapids shop with a 13 foot clear ceiling, any of these fit with margin. In a 12 foot 6 inch shop, the SPOA12 gets tight and the CL10 has the most room. The family shop we worked with had 12 feet 8 inches; the CL10 was the comfortable pick.

Rise time and hydraulic power unit specs

Rise time to full height on a 10K auto home lift ranges from 45 to 55 seconds across the four candidates. That difference sounds trivial. Multiply it by 25 cycles per day and 250 working days per year and you get several hours of net difference over a year. The Rotary units use a 2 HP single-phase 220V power unit; the Challenger CL10 uses a similar-sized unit; the BendPak uses a 2 HP as well. None of them are underpowered. Where they differ is in the pump design. Rotary uses a two-stage gear pump; Challenger uses a similar two-stage design; BendPak uses a two-stage as well. The fluid capacity in the reservoir is between 2.5 and 3 gallons on all four. Add a fluid change interval of every two years to your maintenance plan.

Arm design and pad reach for daily maintenance work

Daily maintenance work does not use the extended arm reach limits; it uses the middle range. But the arm design matters for how quickly a tech can center a vehicle. The Rotary SPOA10 uses a three-stage front arm and a two-stage rear arm, giving asymmetric reach for cab-forward vehicles. The Challenger CL10 uses the same three-stage front, two-stage rear pattern. The BendPak XPR-10AS uses a two-stage front and rear with an offset frame design. All three approaches work. The Cedar Rapids owner tested each in a demo yard visit before he committed; he ended up preferring the Challenger arm feel because the arm-restraint reset engaged more positively for his tech. That is a purely tactile preference. Both Rotary and Challenger are excellent auto home lift platforms in this class.

Lock ladder pitch and working height comfort

The lock ladder is where your tech spends his working day. On a 10K auto home lift, the Rotary SPOA10 clicks every 4 inches; the Challenger CL10 clicks every 3 inches; the BendPak XPR-10AS clicks every 4 inches. On the Rotary SPOA12, the click pitch is 4 inches as well. Fine pitch (Challenger) means a tech can set the lift at the exact height that matches his shoulder for a given vehicle. Coarser pitch (Rotary, BendPak) means one click position may be an inch or two off ideal. For high-mix maintenance work with vehicles of varying deck heights, finer pitch is genuinely better. This detail alone tilted the Cedar Rapids family shop toward the Challenger. Small factor. Real ergonomics gain over a decade of daily work.

Warranty terms and parts availability

Warranty on all four auto home lift candidates covers structural components for a lifetime, hydraulic components for two to five years depending on brand, and electrical components for one to two years. The written warranty details vary; get a copy before you buy. What matters as much as the paper warranty is parts availability in year seven, ten, and fifteen. Rotary and Challenger both have extensive dealer networks and long parts support tails; BendPak has parts through their own distribution. In Iowa, we stock Rotary and Challenger parts in Ames and can get most items same-day or overnight. That was another factor for the Cedar Rapids shop: the difference between waiting three days for a lock cable and having one on our shelf 90 miles away is a real productivity number.

The final pick and the reasoning

The Cedar Rapids family shop bought the Challenger CL10 asymmetric 10K. It won on ceiling clearance margin, on lock ladder pitch, and on the tech’s tactile preference during the demo. It did not win on price; the Rotary SPOA10 was slightly cheaper. The extra spend was justified by the daily ergonomics and the parts pipeline we could support. This is the pattern we see across Iowa family shops: the cheapest auto home lift is rarely the right one, and the most expensive is rarely necessary either. The right pick is a spec-by-spec exercise.
