An EV specialty shop owner in West Des Moines called us last year after an insurance walkthrough flagged the equipment in two of his bays. He had bought an auto lift online, assumed a sticker on the column meant it was certified, and found out during the inspection that it was not — and that his inspector wanted documentation he could not produce. He was not careless; he had simply believed a handful of things that get repeated constantly in this industry and are not true. Here is what ALI Gold certification actually is, what it is not, and where EV maintenance work changes the math.

Myth one: “ALI certified” and “meets ALI standards” mean the same thing
They do not, and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the business. ALI — the Automotive Lift Institute — runs a third-party certification program. A certified model has been independently tested by an accredited lab against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard, the manufacturer’s plant is audited, and the specific model appears on ALI’s published directory with a gold-and-black certification label carrying a unique number. That is the real thing.
“Meets ALI standards,” “designed to ALI specifications,” “ALI compliant,” and “tested to ANSI standards” are marketing phrases. Any manufacturer can print them. None of them involves a third party verifying anything. We have pulled units out of Iowa shops where the column decal was a convincing imitation of the certification label, right down to the gold color, and the model was nowhere in the directory. The way to check takes ninety seconds: get the exact model number off the data plate, then look it up in ALI’s online directory of certified lifts. If the model is not listed by name and capacity, it is not certified, no matter what the box said. When an EV shop owner asks us whether a unit is legitimate, that is the first thing we do — before we talk price, capacity, or lead time.
Myth two: certification is a legal requirement, so anything for sale must be certified
Uncertified equipment is sold in the United States every day, legally. There is no federal rule that a lift must carry third-party certification to be imported or sold. What actually creates the requirement is downstream: OSHA’s general duty clause and 1910.212 push employers toward recognized standards, many state and municipal inspectors reference ANSI/ALI directly, most commercial insurance carriers ask about it, and a growing number of OEM dealer programs simply mandate certified equipment in the service bays.
That means the exposure lands on the shop owner, not the seller. If someone gets hurt and the equipment turns out to be uncertified, the conversation with your carrier and your attorney gets very difficult very fast. We have also seen it complicate lease negotiations — a landlord in a West Des Moines commercial strip asked one of our customers for certification documentation before approving a bay build-out. For an EV specialty shop that is trying to get on manufacturer service networks, this matters even more, because those programs audit equipment. The fix is simple: buy certified, keep the paperwork, and keep the inspection records. It is not more expensive over the life of the equipment. It is just more expensive on day one, and day one is where people flinch.
Myth three: certification covers the whole model line
Certification is granted by specific model and configuration, not by brand or family. A manufacturer can have a dozen certified models and three uncertified ones on the same price sheet. Capacity variants, column height variants, and some regional configurations are listed separately. So when a salesperson tells you “we are an ALI certified company,” that is not an answer — the answer is the model number and its directory listing.
This trips people up on quotes constantly. A shop compares two proposals, sees a lower number on one, and assumes it is the same equipment with a better margin. Sometimes it is the certified model’s uncertified sibling with a similar part number. We quote the exact model, capacity, and configuration, and we tell you plainly whether the unit is on the directory. If you want a certified auto lift and you want to be able to buy a cylinder or a lock assembly for it in 2038, that combination narrows the field quickly. Ask for the model number in writing on every quote you receive, from us or from anybody else.
Myth four: an EV is just a heavy car, so capacity is the only concern
Capacity is the obvious issue and it is real. A midsize electric crossover can push past 5,500 lb, an electric full-size pickup can approach or exceed 9,000 lb, and once you add a shop’s worth of margin, a nominal 10,000 lb unit is the honest minimum for a general EV maintenance bay. Plenty of shops that were fine on a 9,000 lb unit for gas cars are now running near the top of the range every day, and running near the top of the range every day is what wears cables and cylinders early.
But capacity is not the whole story. EV weight distribution is different — the battery pack sits low and centered, which changes how load lands on the arms and where the center of gravity falls relative to the columns. Pad placement matters more, not less, because the pack case is often right where a technician instinctively reaches for a jack point, and the manufacturer-specified lift points are usually narrower and more specific. Arm reach and adapter height need to accommodate low-clearance rockers on aero-optimized bodies. And if you are doing pack service, you need to think about clearance under the vehicle for a table, and whether a four-post or inground configuration serves you better in that bay. Certification does not solve any of this. Correct specification does.
Myth five: a certified unit does not need annual inspection
Certification is about the design and the manufacturing, not about the condition of your equipment after four years of West Des Moines winters, road salt, and forty cycles a day. ANSI/ALI ALOIM — the operation, inspection, and maintenance standard — calls for periodic inspection by a qualified lift inspector, and that is what your insurance carrier and most OEM programs are actually asking about when they request records. A certified unit that has never been inspected is not in compliance with anything.
An annual inspection on a two-post covers anchor torque, cable tension and condition, lock engagement at every position, arm restraint function, hydraulic leaks, hose routing and abrasion, cylinder condition, pad and adapter wear, structural welds, and the legibility of the safety labels. It takes under an hour per unit and it produces a document you can hand an inspector. We do these across central Iowa on a scheduled route, and honestly, the inspection is where we catch the cheap problems before they become the expensive ones — a frayed equalizer cable is a part; a failed one is a very bad afternoon. Myth six: online buying saves money on a commercial auto lift
On the invoice, sometimes. Over five years, almost never. What the online price does not include is a liftgate-capable delivery to a commercial address, unloading a 2,000-plus pound crate, a certified installer, anchors rated for your slab, hydraulic bleed and commissioning, and someone who answers the phone in year six when a lock assembly sticks. We have quoted a lot of repair work on units where the owner saved a chunk up front and then paid us more than the savings to correct a bad install.
The parts question is the one that really bites. When a discount-brand power unit fails and the importer has moved on, there is no cross-reference and no seal kit. What we would tell an EV shop owner starting from scratch
Start with the vehicle list, not the equipment list. Write down the ten vehicles you service most and their curb weights, then add the heaviest thing you expect to see in three years. That number drives capacity, and capacity drives everything else. Then look at your bay: ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, slab thickness and PSI, panel capacity, and where the technician actually stands. Then, and only then, start comparing models — and compare them by model number against the ALI directory.
For most general EV maintenance bays we end up recommending a 10,000 lb to 12,000 lb certified two-post with a long three-stage front arm package, plus adapter stacks that reach the manufacturer-specified lift points without improvising. If you are doing pack drops, a four-post or a set of mobile columns changes the conversation. Budget for annual inspection from day one and put it on the calendar. And keep a folder — certification documentation, install records, inspection reports, parts receipts. That folder is what makes an insurance or OEM audit a ten-minute conversation instead of a crisis.
