A weekend suspension and shock replacement job wants a lift that gives you full underbody access and enough rise to stand up straight, which points at a two-post. A daily-driver oil change and a place to park a second car overnight points at a four-post. Most first-time buyers in the Iowa Great Lakes area come in wanting to do both and end up on a two-post because the wheel access is worth more than the storage.
Suspension work in particular changes the answer. Pulling shocks means the wheel has to be free and the control arm has to drop, which is nearly impossible on a four-post without adding rolling jacks and a bridge kit. If a lifted 3500 dually with a service body is on your regular list, size up. If not, don’t. On the low end, a 7,000 lb lift, like the model referenced in older customer emails we still get, will pick up two average passenger cars and stack them, but it won’t handle a modern half-ton pickup safely. We steer first-timers away from 7,000 lb unless they’ve told us in writing they’ll never put a truck on the auto lift. That’s a firm rule, not a soft preference.
Concrete, Ceiling, and Sidewall in an Iowa Pole Building
A typical Iowa Great Lakes home shop is a 30×40 pole building with a concrete floor and twelve-foot sidewalls. Power: Do You Need 220V?
Yes, in almost every case. A standard home-garage two-post auto lift runs on 208-230V single-phase power, which is a standard 30-amp double-pole breaker in a residential panel. If your pole building is on a subpanel fed from the house, we’ve had customers add a dedicated circuit for around a few hundred dollars through a local electrician; if the building has a main panel of its own, it’s usually a simple breaker install. A 110V lift exists on the market but we don’t recommend one for anything you’d do suspension or shock work under. The motors are underpowered, the pump takes twice as long to reach full rise, and the hydraulic system runs hotter, which shortens seal life.
Every home install we do gets a lockable disconnect on the wall near the lift so the pump can be de-energized before any maintenance. Add a GFCI-protected receptacle nearby for a droplight and an impact charger; you’ll use both constantly. The circuit itself needs to be sized to the motor nameplate, not a guess. Planning for Hydraulic Cylinder Seals and Rebuild Kits
