Every body shop we have quoted an auto lift for over the past decade has run into the same two walls, literally: the ceiling and the overhead door. You have got a paint booth taking up one bay, a frame rack in another, and you need a two-post that can lift a truck for wheel-bearing service without scraping the joist, without blocking the door track, and without making the estimator’s office feel like a submarine. This buyer’s guide is for the Ames body shop foreman who is tired of glossy brochures that dodge the two dimensions actually deciding the sale.

Why Ceiling Height Is the First Number You Should Measure
Manufacturers list overall column height on the spec sheet, and that number is the one that will either sink or save your install. A standard clearfloor two-post typically stands somewhere between 145 and 175 inches tall — call it twelve to fourteen and a half feet. If your body shop has fourteen-foot ceilings you are usually fine. Thirteen feet gets tight. Twelve feet and below means you are looking at a symmetric or a specifically low-ceiling model. Measure to the underside of the lowest joist, not to the top of the deck, and check every corner of the intended lift footprint.
The number nobody thinks to measure is the swing arc for the vehicle you plan to lift. A jacked-up truck with a topper adds two feet of vehicle to the height number, and once the arms bring it three feet off the ground you can be brushing a ceiling fan or a fluorescent light. On body shop calls we usually recommend a symmetric two-post rather than an asymmetric — the swing envelope is easier to reason about when you have booth ductwork running overhead near the target bay.
The Overhead Door Swing Nobody Warns You About
Rolling overhead doors travel up on tracks that curve inward from the vertical, and depending on the door manufacturer that curve intrudes into the top corner of the bay by anywhere from twelve to twenty inches. That intrusion is fine for a normal work bay. Put an auto lift column two feet from the door jamb and suddenly the door track is exactly where the top of your column wants to live. We have measured this wrong once in our early years, and we do not measure it wrong anymore.
The fix is one of three things. Option one: shift the lift footprint deeper into the bay by two or three feet, which is easy if the bay depth allows it. Option two: pick a symmetric lift with the column further from the door than the arm reach. Option three: swap the overhead door for a bifold or a jackshaft-operated door with a lower-profile track. Each of these has cost implications, and each is something you want your installer to walk through with you before an auto lift order is placed with the manufacturer.
Choosing an Auto Lift for Wheel Bearing Work Specifically
Wheel bearing service is a two-post job — full stop. You need the wheels hanging free and the underside of the vehicle open so you can pull rotors, calipers, hubs, and the bearing itself without fighting a runway. A four-post with a rolling jack works, but it doubles the time on every job because you are jacking on top of a lift instead of lifting the whole vehicle correctly. If your body shop does frequent wheel bearing and steering work, a proper two-post is the auto lift that pays back the fastest.
Capacity is easy: a ten-thousand-pound lift covers everything short of a heavy-duty diesel dually, and even most three-quarter-ton pickups fit inside that envelope with margin. If you regularly bring in one-ton diesels for wheel work, jump to a twelve-thousand-pound lift. The extra capacity is not just about weight — it also gives you a slightly wider drive-thru clearance between the columns, which matters on the wider-track pickups that a body shop tends to see for fender and quarter-panel work.
Clearfloor Versus Floorplate for a Cramped Body Shop
The clearfloor two-post has an overhead beam that carries the equalizer cables and the shutoff bar. The floorplate two-post buries all of that in a steel plate you drive over. Body shops with fourteen-foot ceilings should go clearfloor every time — nothing to trip on, nothing to catch a cart. Body shops with under-thirteen-foot ceilings often end up with a floorplate model because the overhead beam simply will not fit. The catch on floorplate lifts is the plate itself. It sits about three-quarters of an inch proud of the surrounding slab, and if you roll heavy jacks or a paint booth cart across it every day, that plate will chew tires. In a body shop where painters and detailers move constantly through the bays, a clearfloor auto lift keeps the floor flat and the workflow clean. Pick your ceiling constraint accordingly and match the lift style to how your shop actually flows.
Column Position and How It Interacts With Your Paint Booth
If your body shop already has a paint booth, the booth is not moving. The lift has to fit around it. The typical mistake is placing the lift columns too close to the booth wall, which puts the arm-swing envelope right into the booth doorway and blocks masking and prep traffic. We usually pull the lift footprint at least four feet clear of any booth wall so a cart can pass on the near side of the columns without a squeeze.
The other column placement decision is orientation to the overhead door. Almost always the drive-thru axis of the lift should point at the door, so you can drive straight in and out without a jackknife. In a two-bay body shop that means the columns run perpendicular to the door line. This orientation also gives your painter the best chance of getting a full-size van out of the booth and onto the auto lift without swinging wide through the parts room or the estimator’s office.
What a Proper Body-Shop Install Actually Costs
Sticker on a good commercial two-post for body-shop work runs in the mid four-figure range for the lift itself, plus freight to the Midwest of a few hundred dollars. Add anchors, the electrical drop, and a two-person install crew for a day and you land in the low-to-mid five-figure range all in. The number people miss is the concrete. If your existing slab is under four inches or shows spalling around anchor bolts from prior equipment, a slab cut and patch runs another mid-four figures on top. It is not a fun number to hear on quote day, but it is much less fun to install a ten-thousand-pound auto lift on a marginal slab and watch anchors pull loose in year three. Have your installer core the slab if there is any doubt.
