A service manager at a franchise dealership in southwest Iowa called us in the middle of a snow week because his suspension bay was the bottleneck in the whole shop. Struts, shocks, control arms, and rear coil springs were stacking up on the schedule, and the one hoist rated for the job was a twenty-year-old unit he did not trust with a loaded three-quarter-ton. He wanted a new auto lift, but he also wanted to know how the money worked — deposit, payment schedule, whether financing would tie up his floor plan line. Why suspension work drives the capacity decision
Suspension and shock replacement is not a light-duty job in a dealership setting anymore. The vehicles rolling through a southwest Iowa store are heavy: crew-cab half-tons at 5,800 to 6,400 lb curb, three-quarter-ton diesels pushing 8,200 lb, and loaded three-row SUVs that surprise people at 6,000 lb. A 10,000 lb two-post covers most of that, but it does not cover it comfortably once you add a plow mount, a topper, or a bed full of tools the customer forgot to unload. That is why we usually steer a dealership doing high-volume strut and spring work toward 12,000 or 15,000 lb capacity rather than the entry tier.
The second factor is arm reach and swing clearance. Strut replacement means the tech is working at the top of the wheel well with an impact and a spring compressor, often with the wheel off and the knuckle hanging. Long-reach front arms let him set pickup points inboard on a frame rail without the arm pad sitting under the pinch weld he needs to access. A three-stage front arm on a Rotary SPOA10 or the equivalent Challenger unit gives you the range to pick up a Miata one hour and an F-250 the next. When we quote a capacity we are quoting the whole geometry, not just the number stamped on the column, and that is the part of the auto lift decision that costs shops the most when they get it wrong.
Real dimensions: what fits in a 14-foot dealership bay
Numbers first, because this is where phone calls turn into decisions. A typical clearfloor two-post with 12,000 lb capacity stands about 145 to 150 inches to the top of the overhead beam. Add the shutoff bar and you want 12 feet 6 inches of true clear ceiling, measured to the lowest obstruction — not the peak of the truss, and not the height your GC quoted on the drawing. Sprinkler heads, unit heaters, and door tracks are what actually kill installs. The southwest Iowa store we worked with had 14 feet on paper and 12 feet 9 inches under a heater pipe, which was fine, but only barely.
Footprint: columns sit roughly 128 to 132 inches apart on a standard-width two-post, drive-through clearance around 100 inches, and overall width close to 12 feet with arms swung. Plan a bay 15 feet wide if you want a tech to open a truck door fully at full rise. Rise on most commercial models lands between 72 and 79 inches at the pad, which puts a 6-foot tech under the rocker of a lifted truck without stooping. Concrete is the other hard number: 4-1/4 inches minimum of 3,000 PSI for most 10K–12K units, and 6 inches for the 15K and up. We core-test when the slab age is unknown, because anchoring a heavy hoist into 3-1/2 inches of 1970s pour is not a risk worth taking with a service department’s liability on the line.
How dealership financing terms actually work on an auto lift
Most dealerships do not want to write a check out of parts and service cash flow for capital equipment, and they should not have to. The common structures we see are a straight equipment lease through a third-party lender, a capital lease with a dollar buyout at term end, or a shop-supplied purchase order with net terms. Terms typically run 36, 48, or 60 months. The longer the term, the lower the monthly, but on a piece of equipment with a 20-plus-year service life, a 60-month term still leaves you with 15 years of free use after the last payment. We have never had a customer regret financing a hoist the way people regret financing a scan tool.
What we control on our end is the deposit and payment schedule against the project itself. A typical arrangement is a deposit at order to lock freight and equipment allocation, the balance of the equipment cost due on delivery, and the installation labor invoiced after commissioning and the first ANSI-standard functional check. That structure protects both sides: you are not paying for labor before the columns are plumb, and we are not floating a freight bill on a specialty item. Total cost of ownership beyond the invoice
The purchase number is the smallest part of the conversation. Electrical is the line item that blindsides dealerships most often: a 220V single-phase circuit at 30 amps for a standard power unit, or a three-phase drop if you are matching existing shop service. If the panel is on the far wall and you need conduit run across a finished bay, that can add meaningfully to the project. Ask your electrician for a firm number before you sign, not a ballpark. We can specify exactly what the power unit needs, but we are not going to guess at your building’s wire run.
Then there is annual inspection. ANSI/ALI ALCTV and OSHA general duty expectations put a documented annual inspection on every commercial hoist, and a dealership with a factory audit schedule cannot skip it. Budget for that plus consumables — cable adjustment, arm restraint gear inspection, hydraulic fluid, and eventually cylinder seals somewhere past year eight. Across a 15-year life on a hard-working suspension bay, maintenance and inspection together typically add 15 to 25 percent on top of the original equipment cost. That is still a fraction of the labor revenue a properly sized hoist generates. Install timing around a live service drive
A dealership cannot close the shop for a week. Every install we do in a working service department gets scheduled around the drive, which usually means we are on site Friday afternoon through Saturday, or we take one bay at a time on consecutive weekdays while the adjacent bays keep producing. A standard two-post replacement in an existing bay — old unit out, anchors patched, new columns set, plumbed, wired, tested, and load-checked — runs a day to a day and a half with our two-man crew, assuming the electrical is already pulled and the slab passes.
Removal of the old hoist is its own line item and people forget it. There is hydraulic fluid to drain and dispose of, anchors to cut or extract, holes to patch with high-strength grout, and 1,800 pounds of steel to get out the door. If the old unit is scrap, we handle it. If you want it kept for a satellite location, say so early because that changes how we take it down. The southwest Iowa store we mentioned went from purchase order to a working, load-tested auto lift in eleven days, and the only reason it was that fast was that their electrician had the 220V circuit stubbed into the bay before our truck arrived. Pre-staging the power is the single biggest lever a service manager has on install speed.
Choosing between clearfloor and floorplate for suspension bays
For dealership suspension work we recommend clearfloor almost every time. An overhead-beam configuration leaves the bay floor completely open, which matters when a tech is rolling a transmission jack or a spring compressor cart under the vehicle and does not want to trip over a floor channel. Floorplate models put the equalization cables and hydraulic line in a low ramp across the drive-in area, and while the ramp is only about 3/4 inch tall, it is a nuisance for creepers, drain pans, and pallet jacks in a bay that sees a hundred vehicles a week.
Floorplate earns its keep in exactly one situation: low ceilings. If your clear height is under 12 feet, an overhead beam simply will not fit and floorplate becomes the only two-post answer — or you move to a low-profile scissor for tire and brake work and keep the suspension jobs on a taller hoist elsewhere. We have installed plenty of floorplate units in older Iowa buildings with 11-foot walls and no room to raise the roof. What we will not do is talk a shop into a configuration that fights the work it does daily. Our intake list is short and it saves everybody a wasted site visit. First, clear ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, measured with a tape, not estimated. Second, slab thickness and pour date if known, plus whether there is radiant tubing or post-tension cable in the floor — that changes anchoring entirely. Third, bay width and depth, and whether the vehicle drives through or backs out. Fourth, available electrical: voltage, phase, amperage, and panel distance. Fifth, your heaviest regular vehicle and its typical load condition. Sixth, target in-service date and how the purchase is being funded.
