An EV specialty shop owner in central Iowa called us thinking he needed a specialized auto lift built specifically for electric vehicles. He had read a dozen articles online telling him standard two-posts were dangerous for EVs, that battery weight required exotic lifting arrangements, and that certain brands had gone bankrupt so their parts were unobtainable. Almost none of that was accurate. This article is the myth-busting conversation we had with him about brand history, parts pipelines, and what actually matters when you spec a lift for differential fluid service on an electric drivetrain. Myth 1: EVs need a completely different type of auto lift

The most common myth we hear from EV shops is that electric vehicles require a specialized auto lift. In practice, a properly speced 10,000 lb or 12,000 lb two-post from any major brand handles a Tesla Model 3, a Model Y, a Ford Mach-E, a Chevy Bolt, and most Rivian configurations without any modification. The batteries are heavy, but the total vehicle weight is not radically different from a comparable ICE pickup. A Model Y at 4,400 lb is lighter than an F-150 that same shop lifts on the same equipment.

The kernel of truth behind the myth is that some EVs have unusually low ride height, non-obvious lift points hidden by aero panels, and battery packs that occupy floor pan space where a factory pad might otherwise sit. Those are real considerations — they change how you position the arms, not what brand of lift you buy. Myth 2: Chinese lifts are all dangerous imports

The second myth is that all lifts manufactured in China are dangerous and only European or American-made lifts are safe. This one is half-true and needs unpacking. Yes, there are low-tier import lifts sold on marketplaces that skip safety systems, use undersized cables, and never touch a third-party test lab. Those are genuinely dangerous. But most major-brand lifts sold in North America — including several premium brands — are manufactured in China at factories that meet ALI certification standards and pass ANSI testing.

The distinction that matters is not country of manufacture; it is ALI certification and warranty support. An ALI gold-label auto lift built in China to spec is safer than an uncertified lift built anywhere else, because ALI certification requires third-party structural testing and safety-system verification. The EV shop owner had been avoiding a top-tier brand because of the country-of-origin label. When we walked him through what ALI certification actually verifies, he realized he had been rejecting the safer option for the wrong reason. Certification, not country, is the honest signal.

Myth 3: Parts are impossible on older auto lifts

The third myth is that older lifts, especially from brands that have consolidated or changed ownership, cannot be repaired because parts are unobtainable. This is almost never true for major brands. The lift industry has consolidated significantly over the past twenty years — Rotary, Forward, Direct Lift, and several others sit under common ownership groups — but that consolidation has actually made parts easier to find, not harder, because a shared distribution network now covers what used to be separate brand channels.

The genuinely orphaned brands are the ones that were never in the ALI mainstream to begin with: obscure imports from the 2000s, private-label lifts sold by big-box stores that stopped carrying the line, and hobby-market brands that never had a real service network. If you can identify your auto lift by an ALI serial plate, you can almost certainly get parts for it. The EV shop had an old Rotary two-post inherited from the previous tenant that he assumed was unsupportable. We looked up the serial, sourced replacement cables and a power-unit rebuild kit, and had it back in service inside two weeks.

Myth 4: Diff service is trivial on an EV

The fourth myth runs the other direction — a common assumption from ICE-experienced techs that EV differential fluid service is trivial or unnecessary. Most EVs still have gear-reduction units at each drive axle with real gearset fluid that lives a real service interval. Tesla’s front and rear drive units have a specified fluid change interval that varies by model year and drive-unit generation. Rivian, Ford, and GM EVs all have documented fluid service points that many shops skip because the ICE mindset says “no engine, no oil.”

That mindset is exactly wrong, and it is a real revenue opportunity for EV specialty shops. The auto lift work is standard: raise the vehicle, position arms, catch the frame lift points, and drain and refill the gear-reduction units per OEM spec. Fluid capacity is typically half a quart to a full quart per unit. The service itself takes about forty minutes on a well-marked platform vehicle. What varies is diagnostic access — some EVs require a scan tool to enter service mode before you can trust the drivetrain to hold position on the lift. Verify the OEM procedure before you lift.

Brand history: who owns whom now

The consolidation picture in the auto lift industry is genuinely confusing to buyers who have not tracked it. Vehicle Service Group — VSG — is the parent company for Rotary, Forward, Direct Lift, and several related brands. That ownership means the three brands share manufacturing platforms, distribution, and parts pipelines. If you can source a part for a Rotary lift, you can almost certainly source the equivalent for a Forward or Direct Lift of the same generation because the parts often are the same.

Challenger is separately owned, as are BendPak and Atlas. Each has its own factory network and its own parts pipeline. For an EV shop trying to decide between brands, the honest answer is that any ALI-certified major-brand auto lift will do the job, and the choice comes down to warranty terms, dealer support in your region, and the specific configuration that fits your bay. What we tell every EV shop — and every ICE shop, for that matter — is that the parts pipeline behind your lift matters more than the brand name on the column. That is the entire recommendation. The vehicle mix does not require exotic equipment; it requires standard equipment used carefully.
