An EV specialty shop owner in Council Bluffs called us last year convinced his auto lift warranty was going to cover a set of stretched equalizer cables at eighteen months. It did not, and the reason had nothing to do with the manufacturer being difficult. Cables are a wear item on almost every warranty document in this industry, and the shop had been running a battery-pack-heavy fleet of crossovers through tire rotations at a volume the previous owner never imagined. That call kicked off a long conversation about what warranty coverage actually is, what it is not, and how a claim gets paid when something legitimately fails. This article is that conversation, aimed squarely at shops doing EV wheel and tire work.

Myth One: “The Warranty Covers Everything for Five Years”
The number on the brochure is a structural number. When a manufacturer advertises a five-year warranty, that almost always refers to the structural steel — columns, carriages, arms, base plates, welds. It is a genuine commitment and it is worth having, because a cracked weld or a bent carriage is a catastrophic problem and the good brands stand behind their steel. But structural coverage is one line in a tiered document. Underneath it sit shorter terms: typically one to two years on hydraulic and electrical components, and often twelve months or less on the power unit itself depending on who built it. Below that sit the items with no coverage at all.
The excluded list is where the Council Bluffs shop got surprised. Cables, chains, lock cables and springs, arm restraint gears, slide blocks, hoses, seals, and O-rings are consumables. They wear as a function of cycles and load, and no manufacturer is going to warrant a part whose life depends entirely on how hard the buyer runs it. That is not a loophole, it is physics — the same way nobody warrants brake pads. The practical response is to read the tier structure before you sign a purchase order and budget separately for wear items. Myth Two: “EV Weight Doesn’t Change Anything”
It changes a lot, and it is the single most common mistake we see in EV-focused shops. A midsize electric crossover routinely lands two to three times the curb weight above a comparable gas model of the same footprint. An electric half-ton pickup can push past 9,000 lb before you put a driver in it. Shops that bought a 9,000 or 10,000 lb capacity unit for a general-service mix five years ago are now regularly loading it near or past its rating, and that is where warranty claims go to die. Every document in this business excludes damage from exceeding rated capacity, and manufacturers can often tell from wear patterns and cylinder condition when it has been happening.
The other EV-specific factor is weight distribution. Battery packs sit low and centered, which sounds friendly, but the load concentration through the pickup points is different from a front-engine vehicle, and the arms and adapters see different moments. Many EVs also specify particular jacking and lifting points to avoid pack damage, which pushes shops toward taller adapters and sometimes toward frame-contact pads that change the effective load path. When we spec an auto lift for EV work in Iowa now, we start at 12,000 lb capacity for two-post applications and go up from there, and we make sure the adapter kit matches the vehicles actually rolling through the door. Overbuying capacity costs a modest premium at purchase and protects the coverage you paid for.
Myth Three: “Installation Doesn’t Affect the Warranty”
It affects it more than any other variable. Nearly every manufacturer conditions coverage on installation per the published instructions — correct concrete thickness and strength, correct anchor type and torque, correct column plumb, correct electrical supply. A shop that bolts a set of columns to a four-inch slab that was poured for parking, or shims a column past the allowable stack, has voided the structural coverage before the first vehicle goes up. We have been called in to inspect units where the anchors were in cracked concrete near a control joint. There is no version of that claim that gets paid.
Electrical supply is the quiet one. The question we get constantly is whether 220V is required, and for commercial equipment the answer is usually yes — most shop-grade power units want single-phase 208-230V, and plenty of installations want three-phase. Running a unit on the wrong voltage, on an undersized circuit, or through a long extension cord cooks motors and starter contactors, and motor failures from improper supply are excluded across the board. Myth Four: “Any Part Will Do If It Fits”
This one costs shops real money. The moment a non-OEM cable, lock component, or cylinder goes onto a unit, the manufacturer’s exposure to whatever happens next drops to zero, and most warranty documents say so in plain language. We understand the temptation — a generic cable assembly from an online seller shows up cheaper and faster than a proper part, and the shop needs the bay back today. But the cheap cable is rarely the right length, the swaged ends are rarely rated the same, and once it is on the equipment the carriage synchronization and lock timing are no longer to spec. Now you have a compromised unit and no coverage.
The same applies to repairs performed by someone outside the authorized network. Plenty of shops have a talented technician who can absolutely rebuild a cylinder, and in a pinch that is what happens. Just know that an undocumented in-house rebuild on a covered component usually ends the coverage on that component and sometimes on related systems. Myth Five: “Tire Rotations Are Light Duty”
Tire and wheel work is the highest-cycle job in most shops and the Council Bluffs operation is a good example. Their volume is rotations, seasonal changeovers, and wheel refinishing on EV-specific low-rolling-resistance packages, plus balance work. That means the equipment goes up and comes down all day at partial height. Every one of those cycles is a full pull on the cables and another pass across the lock ladder, and on a heavy electric vehicle each of those pulls is carrying far more load than the same cycle on a compact sedan. Cycle count times load is the wear equation, and rotation-heavy EV shops are near the top of it in both variables.
Nothing about that is covered, and nothing about it should be. What it does mean is that a rotation-heavy shop should plan on wear-item replacement at the aggressive end of every published interval, budget for it, and inspect weekly rather than annually. We also steer high-volume wheel shops toward configurations that reduce unnecessary travel — a mid-rise scissor or a properly positioned four-post handles a lot of wheel work at a fraction of the cycle wear a full-height two-post pull generates. How an Auto Lift Warranty Claim Actually Gets Processed
Here is the workflow, because most shop owners have never run one. Step one is documentation: model number, serial number, date of purchase, and the original invoice. Step two is a description of the failure with photographs — the part, its mounting, and enough context to show installed condition. Step three, and this is the one shops skip, is stopping use immediately and not attempting a repair. A manufacturer will frequently want the failed component returned for analysis, and a part that has been cut, welded, or replaced is no longer evidence. Step four is the claim submission through the distributor, which is where we come in.
We file claims on behalf of our customers because we know what the manufacturers need and in what format. Typically we open the file, submit photos and documentation, and get either an authorization to ship a replacement or a request for further inspection. Turnaround on a well-documented structural or hydraulic claim from a major brand is usually days, not weeks. Turnaround on a poorly documented claim from a shop with no purchase record and no installation file can stretch to a month or die entirely. The difference is almost never the manufacturer’s attitude — it is the paperwork. What We Tell Iowa EV Shops Before They Buy
Four things, every time. First, buy capacity you do not need yet — the EV fleet is getting heavier, not lighter, and the incremental cost of stepping up a capacity tier is small next to the cost of running near rating for a decade. Second, buy a brand with a living parts pipeline. Rotary and Challenger on the commercial side, BendPak or Atlas where the duty is lighter. Warranty language means nothing if the company answering the phone in three years does not stock the component. Third, have it installed to spec and documented, because that file is your claim. Fourth, read the tiers so you know which parts you are buying forever.
