During that time the auto lift is under constant load and any drift, arm slippage, or safety-lock failure creates a life-safety event, not an inconvenience.
That’s why oil pan work belongs on a commercial-grade lift with dual arm restraints, positive-engagement safety locks at every stroke position, and a hydraulic system rated for extended dwell without pressure decay. It does not belong on a bargain-tier machine that was designed for cycle work.
The ALI Safety Standards That Actually Matter Here
ALI Gold certification requires the auto lift to hold rated capacity indefinitely on its mechanical safety locks, without hydraulic assistance. That is the single most important spec for oil pan work. If your hydraulic system leaks a fraction of an inch per hour, the safety locks catch and hold the vehicle at the exact height they engaged. A non-ALI-certified lift may or may not have that behavior; you cannot tell from the sticker. Buy ALI, install ALI, verify the sticker is there. If your insurance carrier ever asks — and they will, after any incident — you want the paperwork.
Dual arm restraints are the second must-have. When a technician braces against the front control arm to break loose a pan bolt, the reaction force pushes the arm sideways. Dual restraints prevent the swing; single restraints often do not. This detail is not marketing — it’s the difference between the truck staying where you left it and the truck rolling off the pads.
Fluid Handling and Fire Suppression Around the Lift
An oil pan job spills fluid. Even with a drain pan the tech usually catches a cup of oil on the floor and on his shoulder. That fluid mixes with brake dust, grease, and the coolant residue that lives on every shop floor, and it makes the concrete under your auto lift the slipperiest surface in the building. We spec every oil-pan-capable bay with anti-slip epoxy floor coating in a 6-foot perimeter around the lift, a hard-plumbed oil drain to a waste-oil tank, and a 10-lb ABC fire extinguisher within arm’s reach of the columns.

Overhead Access for Bolts, Sealant, and Torque
Oil pan bolts are often accessed from above through wheel wells or engine bay openings, not from below. That means your technician is standing on a stepstool with arms overhead while the vehicle is at working height. Ceiling clearance above the raised vehicle needs to be at least 6 feet — enough for a full stretch — and any overhead hydraulic hoses, air lines, or lighting fixtures need to be tucked back so they don’t catch a torque wrench extension.
We route overhead hoses and lighting through the crossbar or the columns rather than free-hanging across the bay. On low-ceiling installs we specify floor-plate (baseplate) auto lift configurations that move the hydraulic connections to the floor and clear the overhead completely.
Working Height and Ergonomic Comfort
Oil pan work is done at shoulder height — the vehicle is raised until the pan is roughly at the tech’s chest. That’s typically 55 to 65 inches of lift height, not full extension. Every commercial auto lift we sell has safety-lock engagement at multiple stroke positions along the column, so the tech can set the exact working height and lock it. If your lift only engages the safety locks at full up and full down, oil pan work is dangerous and slow — you’re either lifting the vehicle too high, or you’re relying on hydraulic hold for hours at a time.
Take your top three technicians into the bay and have them stand next to a raised vehicle. Ask each of them the height where their hands land naturally on the pan. That’s the working height you should lock to. Fatigue drops, quality goes up, and callback jobs drop with it.
