A car restoration shop owner up in the Iowa Great Lakes region walked us through his floor plan on a video call last fall, one bay at a time, asking us to sanity check the auto lift he was leaning toward. He had eight cars in the shop at any given time, three of them long-term projects he needed to store off the floor for months, and five in active teardown, media blast, paint prep, and reassembly. His question was not really about the lift itself, it was about how the lift fit the choreography of a restoration shop. That is a different question than a general-purpose service bay, because the workflow, the tool paths, and the storage requirements are all different. The lift you buy has to serve all of it.

Why a restoration shop is not a service bay
In a normal service bay, the vehicle rolls in, goes up, gets worked on, comes down, and rolls out inside a shift or two. In a restoration bay, the vehicle sits. Sometimes it sits for weeks, waiting on parts, sitting on media blast, drying between paint coats, or parked while the crew works on the customer's other project. The auto lift in that bay is not a service tool that flips through customers, it is a workstation that spends most of its life supporting a project car at a specific height.
That fundamentally changes what the lift needs to do well. It has to hold weight at a fixed height for long periods without hydraulic creep. It has to give the tech clear undercarriage access without ropes and cables getting in the way. It has to let the tech get in and out of the car repeatedly without a column blocking a door. And it has to not lock up the bay when the vehicle is up. That specific set of demands narrows the choices in a way most restoration owners have not thought through.
Two-post versus four-post for restoration work
The instinct in a restoration shop is often to pick a two-post because it lifts by the frame and gives you wheels-off access. In practice, that instinct works against restoration workflow. Two-post arms load the pinch welds hard, which is fine on a modern unibody vehicle for an hour but risky over weeks of sitting. Two-posts also constantly move as hydraulics settle, meaning your safety locks are what actually hold the car, not the cylinder pressure. That is fine on a service bay but it means you can hear the lift settle onto the next lock at 2 a.m., and that noise means the vehicle just moved a quarter inch.
A four-post auto lift solves both problems. The vehicle sits on runways, weight distributed across all four tires, mechanical locks engaged at your chosen height. Add a pair of rolling jacks to get wheels off when the tech needs them, and you have the best of both worlds. That is the layout we recommend for almost every restoration shop, and it is what the Great Lakes region owner ultimately went with after we walked him through the tradeoffs.
Runway length and vehicle mix
Restoration shops see a wider range of vehicle lengths than any service bay. A 1963 Buick Riviera is seventeen feet long. A first-generation Mazda Miata is thirteen. A dually pickup is over twenty. If your auto lift runways only fit vehicles between fifteen and eighteen feet, you have already ruled out half your potential project cars. Rotary and BendPak both make extended-runway four-post models, typically labeled XLT or EFP-EXT, that add roughly two feet of runway length for less than ten percent up-charge on the base lift.
For a restoration shop with a mixed vehicle stable, that extra length is not a luxury. It is the difference between a shop that can take on a big-bumper Impala project and one that has to turn the work away. We size runways to the longest vehicle we ever want to put on the lift, plus at least twelve inches of buffer front and rear, and we pick a model that meets that dimension out of the box. Trying to add runway length to a lift after installation is not a real option on any brand.
Bay layout: where the auto lift goes matters
The lift itself is only one piece of the bay. Where it lives inside the bay determines whether the workflow moves smoothly or grinds. Our recommended layout for a two-lift restoration shop is to run the lifts perpendicular to the bay door, spaced far enough apart that both cars can be lifted simultaneously without tool paths crossing. Ten feet between column centers, minimum, gives room for a tech, a rolling toolbox, a floor jack, and an air line reel between the two lifts.
Behind or beside each lift is where the tech's mobile toolbox and rolling drawers live when the car is up. Overhead, the air line drop and light fixture placement should be centered over each lift, not over the walking lane. Two of the most common mistakes we see in retrofit restoration shops are lights that leave shadows on the undercarriage and air hoses that dangle across the walking path. Both are trivial to fix at layout time and expensive to fix later.
Workflow: paint, media blast, and the storage rotation
A restoration shop workflow is a rotation, not a line. Cars move from teardown, to media blast, to primer, to color, to reassembly, and back into storage between phases. The auto lift is the anchor point for teardown and reassembly, which means it needs to be the last stop before storage and the first stop out of storage. Positioning the lift near the shop door works for teardown but forces the finished car back through the whole shop when it leaves. Positioning it deep in the shop works for reassembly but makes teardown a wrestling match.
The compromise we recommend for a Great Lakes region restoration owner is to put the primary auto lift roughly one third of the way in from the door, close to media blast so raw metal can be worked on immediately, and to keep a second smaller lift or a rolling scissor jack in a corner storage zone for touch-up work. That geometry keeps the primary workflow tight and the storage rotation clean, and it minimizes the moves per car that a shop of eight active projects has to make each week.
Storage rotation and the second bay
Long-term storage is where a lot of restoration owners under-plan. A car in primer that is going to sit for six weeks while the tech works on another project should not be occupying the primary lift. That is what a dedicated storage lift is for, typically a lower-cost four-post rated 8,000 to 9,000 pounds with casters so it can roll to a wall when not in use. The owner in the Iowa Great Lakes region ended up with one primary Rotary commercial four-post at his main service bay and a BendPak home-tier four-post with casters in the storage zone.
That two-lift setup runs him about the same total as one heavy-duty two-post plus a rolling jack, but it dramatically improves his workflow. The storage lift can be moved out of the way when he needs the floor for a paint booth setup, and the main lift is always available for active work. If your restoration shop is stalled because your only lift is occupied by a project that is not moving that day, adding a second lower-tier lift is often the single highest-leverage purchase you can make.
Sequencing the auto lift purchase into a restoration build
If you are building or expanding a restoration shop, the sequence we recommend is slab first, then electrical rough-in, then lifts, then compressor and air lines, then paint booth. Getting the lift decision made before the slab pour lets the concrete crew add reinforcement exactly where the anchors will land. Waiting until after the slab is cured to pick the lift usually means retrofitting anchors into wire mesh concrete that would rather crack than hold, and that is a story we have written into more than one first-year restoration shop history.
