Last fall an overlanding builder in the Quad Cities called us with a specific problem: he was restoring a 1994 F-350 into a full expedition rig with a flatbed camper and needed an auto lift that could handle a fully-loaded 9,500 lb curb weight while still fitting under a 12-foot 8-inch ceiling with a garage door that swung on a barn-style rail. His previous shop had told him it was impossible. It was not impossible — it was a math problem with three constraints, and we solved it in a single site visit. This is that case study, with the actual dimensions, so any restoration or overlanding builder facing the same constraints can copy the approach.

The Three Constraints Every Restoration Shop Faces
Restoration and metal work does two things to your auto lift requirements. First, the vehicle is on the machine for weeks, not hours, so the lift doubles as the fabrication workbench. Second, you’re welding, grinding, and moving heavy sub-assemblies underneath, which means the arms and pads have to clear a rotisserie or a portable lift table without interference. The Quad Cities builder had a 30×50 shop with a 12-foot 8-inch clear ceiling to the truss bottom, an overhead barn-style door on the south wall, and a slab poured in 2003 at a documented 5 inches with #4 rebar on 16-inch centers. That gave us three constraints to plan around: overhead clearance, door swing, and rear-arm reach past the fenders.
Any one of those in isolation is trivial. Combined, they eliminate about 60 percent of the lifts on the market. The trick is to work the door-swing constraint first, because it dictates where the columns can go, and then let ceiling and reach drive the model choice.
Ceiling Height Math for a 12-Foot 8-Inch Building
A standard clear-floor two-post auto lift has a column top height around 12 feet 2 to 12 feet 4 inches. Add a shackle or overhead limit switch and you can lose two more inches. If your rafters are at 12 feet 8 inches you have four inches of clearance — enough, but tight. The trap is that trusses often hang lower than the rafters; sag over 20 years of Iowa winters adds up. We laser-measured six points across the ceiling and found the low spot was 12 feet 6.5 inches at the middle truss.
The fix was a floor-plate (baseplate) two-post configuration where the overhead hydraulic hose runs through a floor channel rather than an overhead crossbar. That drops the column height requirement to about 11 feet 2 inches and gives him 16 inches of daylight above the lift — enough for a portable gantry to roll over the top of the raised truck. It also removes the crossbar that would otherwise interfere with the barn door track.
Door Swing and Column Placement
Barn-style doors on a rail swing outward as they open, but the leading edge sweeps a track that has to remain clear. In this shop the door track ran 11 feet from the south wall. Any column placed within 12 feet of that wall would either block the door or force the technician to work with the door partially open — a non-starter in an Iowa winter. We staked out the columns at exactly 14 feet 6 inches from the south wall, which gave the door full swing, gave the technician a 3-foot walkaround at the front of the vehicle, and still left 30 feet of workshop depth behind the lift for the fabrication table and welding station.
The runway between columns was 12 feet 4 inches on center — inside the symmetric range for the model we chose — so the arms swing to full reach without hitting either the north or south walls. Twenty-eight inches of clearance behind the rear columns lets the builder walk around with a MIG lead and a jack stand.
Capacity Selection for a Heavy Overlanding Build
A stock F-350 SRW crew cab is around 7,000 lb. Add a flatbed, a habitat pod, a bumper winch, a rear tire carrier, a fuel tank upgrade, and 37-inch tires and you’re at 9,300 to 9,800 lb before you weigh the passengers or the tools inside. A 10,000 lb auto lift is technically enough but leaves no margin for the moment loading generated by a technician standing on the frame rail. We spec’d this build at 12,000 lb capacity — one class up — which gives him 20 percent headroom for the entire life of the machine.
Going up in capacity did not cost as much as he expected; the delta between the 10K and 12K in the same model family was roughly 12 percent of the machine price. Given that the build itself will occupy the lift for eight to twelve weeks, that extra capacity margin is cheap insurance.
Arm Configuration and Restoration-Friendly Adapters
For restoration and metal work you want arms that reach past the fender line so a rotisserie or a floor jack can slide underneath without hitting the pad. A three-stage front arm with a swing telescopic tip gives you inboard reach for pinch-weld pads and outboard reach for frame rails. We added truck adapters that raise the pad another 6 inches — critical when you’re lifting an F-350 with a flatbed conversion, because the frame rails sit higher than a stock pickup box.
For welding and grinding under the vehicle we also added the fully-caged arm restraint option, which locks the arm position so the truck cannot walk if you brace a jack against a control arm. It’s a small line item on the invoice and it eliminates 90 percent of the arm-drift issues restoration shops call us about.
Install Sequence for a Working Restoration Shop
The builder was mid-project on a Bronco during our install, so we scheduled the auto lift install for a Friday-Saturday, giving us Sunday to test-cycle before he needed the bay Monday morning. Slab drilling took two hours, columns went up in another three, hoses and hydraulic setup took about four including cable routing through the floor channel, and initial cycle testing plus first-load calibration took two more. Total: eleven hours of install labor over two days, with the shop back in full service Monday.
He asked us to leave the shipping crate for a plasma-cutter table conversion. That’s not something we normally do, but restoration guys are resourceful and we like resourceful.
Total Delivered Cost and What He’d Do Differently
The full package landed in the low-to-mid five figures including a 12,000 lb clear-floor two-post auto lift, truck adapters, caged arm restraints, freight from our Iowa warehouse to the Quad Cities, standard wedge anchors upgraded to epoxy for the outermost bolts, install labor, and one year of scheduled inspection. He financed 24 months at bank-quoted rate through our partner. Would he do anything differently? Yes — he says he would have spec’d the mobile column adapter kit from day one, because he’s since bought a second used truck to convert and wishes he had a rolling column option. We’re quoting him that add-on now.
