Every few weeks a body shop foreman calls us from somewhere between Ames and Des Moines with the same problem: the shop is doing more suspension and shock replacement than it did five years ago, and the crew is fighting for time on one aging two-post while the second bay sits empty. Choosing an auto lift for that kind of work is not complicated, but it is easy to get wrong — capacity gets over-bought, arm reach gets under-thought, and nobody plans for the semi that shows up with 2,400 pounds of steel on a flatbed. Why suspension work changes what you should buy

Suspension and shock replacement is wheels-free work. That single fact drives most of the decision. You need the vehicle up high enough that a tech can stand under a strut tower and swing a breaker bar without hunching, and you need the wheels hanging so control arms, spring seats, and sway bar links come apart without the geometry loaded. A two-post handles that natively. A four-post does not, unless you add rolling jacks — and rolling jacks add cost, add a step, and add another thing to maintain. If suspension is a real part of your mix, a clear-floor two-post is almost always the honest answer.

The second thing suspension work changes is height. Shops that skimp on rise regret it within a month. Look at the maximum lifting height spec, then subtract the thickness of your adapters and pads, then subtract the tech’s tolerance for working overhead. A unit with roughly 74 to 80 inches of rise puts the average sedan’s rocker panel where an adult can work standing straight. On a truck-heavy suspension mix, you also want to confirm the overhead beam clearance, because a lifted F-250 on full rise eats ceiling fast. We have seen more than one central Iowa pole building where the auto lift itself was fine and the roof purlins were the problem.

Capacity: 10,000 lb is the sweet spot, not the ceiling

Foremen tend to ask for more capacity than they need because it feels like cheap insurance. It usually is not. A 10,000 lb two-post covers essentially everything a general repair or collision shop rolls in — passenger cars, crossovers, half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups, most cargo vans. Jumping to 12,000 or 15,000 lb adds column mass, adds footprint, and often adds required slab thickness. If you are not regularly lifting one-ton duallies, shuttle buses, or loaded box trucks, the extra capacity buys you nothing but a bigger freight bill.

Where the extra capacity does pay is when the vehicle is long as well as heavy. A 15,000 lb unit typically comes with longer arms and a wider drive-through, which matters if you are pulling exhaust or rear leaf springs on extended-cab trucks. That is a length decision dressed up as a weight decision. Be honest about your five heaviest jobs from last quarter rather than the one dually your neighbor’s cousin brought in once. We would rather sell you the right auto lift the first time than swap it out in two years. And remember that capacity ratings assume balanced loading across all four arms — a pickup with an empty bed and a heavy diesel up front loads the front pair far harder than the sticker suggests, which is another argument for adapters and proper arm placement rather than raw tonnage.

Symmetric, asymmetric, or versymmetric arms

Arm configuration decides whether your techs can open a door once the vehicle is up. Symmetric two-posts sit the vehicle centered between the columns with equal-length arms — great load balance, strong for trucks, but the door opens right into the column on a sedan. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses a short front arm and long rear arm so the driver sits behind the column. For a shop doing shock and strut work where techs are in and out of the cabin checking ride height, that door clearance is not a luxury.

Rotary’s versymmetric design splits the difference and is what we recommend most often for mixed fleets in central Iowa. You get asymmetric door clearance for cars and symmetric-style load capability for pickups on the same unit. The three-stage front arms on those models also reach forward far enough to catch a unibody crossover’s pinch weld without stretching. If your shop is genuinely truck-only — farm trucks, service bodies, flatbeds — symmetric is fine and often cheaper. If you see a mix, and almost every Iowa shop does, spend the small premium. Slab, anchors, and the concrete nobody checked

The single most common delay we run into is concrete. A two-post needs a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength under each column, typically four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete or better, cured, with the anchors set away from control joints and slab edges. Older shops in small Iowa towns frequently have three-and-a-half inch slabs poured over questionable base, or a nice thick pad in the middle of the bay and a thin apron right where you wanted the columns.

We core-test when there is any doubt. If the slab does not pass, the fix is straightforward: saw out a footing pad, dig, pour a proper pier under each column, and let it cure before anchoring. It costs money and it costs two weeks, but it is far cheaper than pulling anchors under a loaded vehicle. Plan for it in your budget rather than discovering it on install day. Also check where your floor drains and in-floor heat lines run — we have had to shift a planned auto lift location by three feet because a PEX loop ran exactly where the anchors needed to go, and nobody had the original drawings. Ask the building’s owner for as-builts early.

Freight, unloading, and forklift logistics

Here is the part buyers underestimate. A 10,000 lb two-post ships as roughly 1,600 to 2,200 pounds of columns, carriage, arms, and hardware, usually on one or two pallets and often with the columns crated long. It arrives by LTL freight on a 53-foot trailer, and unless you paid for liftgate service, that trailer has no way to put the crate on the ground. Most rural Iowa shops do not have a dock. So you need a forklift rated for the weight with forks long enough to reach under a nine-foot crate, or you need a telehandler, or you need to schedule the delivery for a day when the implement dealer down the road can swing by.

Sort this out before you order, not when the driver calls from the highway with a two-hour window. We handle delivery and unloading as part of our install packages, which is why most of our customers let us manage it — one call, one crew, one date. If you are self-installing, ask the freight carrier explicitly about liftgate and residential or limited-access surcharges, inspect the crate for shipping damage before you sign, and photograph anything bent. Power, air, and what the electrician needs to know

Most two-post power units come wired for single-phase 208-230V, drawing on the order of 20 to 30 amps under load, and want a dedicated circuit with a disconnect within sight of the unit. Some shops ask whether they can run one on 110V. A few small home-garage models can. A commercial-duty unit doing suspension work all day should not. Tell your electrician the motor horsepower, voltage, and full-load amps off the data plate before he pulls wire, and have him land the disconnect where a tech can hit it without walking behind the vehicle.

You also need shop air if the unit uses an air-actuated lock release, which most modern two-posts do. That is a quarter-inch line to the power unit side, low volume, but it has to be there or the locks will not disengage. We have shown up to commission an auto lift in a brand-new pole building where the compressor was still on the wish list. Run the air drop while the walls are open. Same for the electrical: conduit in the slab or overhead is cheap during construction and expensive afterward. If you are building new, send us the floor plan and we will mark where the power, air, and anchor points want to be so the concrete crew and the electrician are working from the same drawing.

What it costs, and what we would do

Budget in tiers rather than exact figures, because freight and steel pricing move. A quality 10,000 lb clear-floor two-post from Rotary or Challenger lands in the mid-four-figure to low-five-figure range for the equipment itself. Add freight, add professional installation and anchoring, add adapters and truck adapters, add a certified inspection. Entry-level import units are cheaper and there is a place for them in a hobby garage, but a shop billing suspension labor eight hours a day should buy the commercial-duty unit and stop thinking about it.
