A Waukee dealership service manager called us last spring because his shop was killing arm pads and slide blocks faster than his warranty budget could keep up. The auto lift on bay four was doing an average of forty-two wheel bearing R and R jobs a month, and the lift was three years old. We walked the numbers with him: for a dealership running that duty cycle, only an ALI Gold certified auto lift with the right arm geometry and pad configuration will hold up. The lift on bay four was ANSI-compliant but not ALI Gold. That distinction is why we ended up specifying a very different column when we replaced it that summer.

What ALI Gold actually certifies

Owners hear ALI Gold and assume it means "the good lift." What it actually means is that the specific model has been tested to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards by an independent third-party lab and passed. The certification covers load capacity, safety mechanisms, control systems, and structural design. A gold-label lift is required to bear a specific weight at each arm-reach position, engage safety locks reliably under load, and provide operator controls that meet the standard. It does not certify the installer, and it does not cover the concrete pad the lift sits on.

Dealerships care about the label for two reasons. First, most manufacturer service contracts and warranty programs now require ALI Gold certified equipment as a condition of authorization, especially for EV and hybrid work. Second, ALI Gold gives the service manager a defensible position if OSHA or an insurer ever audits the shop after an incident. A non-certified lift is not illegal to use in a private shop, but it moves liability squarely to the owner. For a Waukee dealership working under manufacturer warranty audits, ALI Gold is not optional — it is the baseline spec on every column.

Wheel bearing work: why arm reach and pad height matter

Wheel bearing service on a modern crossover or truck requires the operator to lift the vehicle high enough to remove the wheel comfortably, then hold the hub assembly at a working height where a pneumatic impact and a slide hammer can operate without fighting gravity. The auto lift arm has to reach the manufacturer’s specified lift point — which on newer unibody chassis is a rocker pinch weld or a purpose-built frame boss — and hold it accurately with no side load on the column.

Adjustable arm length is critical. A short-reach front arm cannot hit a Nissan Rogue rocker point without the tech using a wobble adapter, and wobble adapters are how pads get chewed. We spec three-stage front arms with a minimum reach of 24 inches and a maximum of 55 inches, paired with two-stage rear arms with similar range. Pad height stack has to reach a low rocker — often 3 inches off the floor on lowered sport variants — and stack to 8 inches for a lifted pickup. For high-cycle bearing work, we spec quick-swap pads with a positive lock retention so pads do not walk out under load. This spec sheet is not aspirational — it is how the failed lift on bay four was underspecced from day one.

Deep-dive on lifting capacity: rated vs. real

Rated capacity on an auto lift is the number the manufacturer will stand behind at any arm-reach position within the certified envelope. A 12,000 pound rated two-post can lift 12,000 pounds distributed across the four pads within the safe reach range. Real-world lifting capacity on a wheel bearing job is much lower than that, because the vehicle’s weight distribution and the arm-reach position determine how much load each arm sees. A one-ton dually with the front wheels off can put nearly 4,000 pounds on each rear arm, and if that arm is fully extended, the load and moment can approach the arm’s design limit.

The lesson: pick a rated capacity with headroom. For a dealership doing wheel bearing work on trucks up to 10,000 pounds gross, we spec a 12,000 pound rated column at minimum, and often a 15,000 pound column if the shop sees any 3500-series or medium-duty commercial work. The extra capacity does not lift bigger vehicles — it gives the arms and cylinders margin at long reach positions. That margin is what turns a five-year lift into a fifteen-year lift under Waukee dealership duty cycles.

Dimensions that decide whether the auto lift fits a Waukee bay

Dealership bays in the Waukee metro come in a few standard sizes. Most are 12 feet wide by 25 feet deep, with a 12-foot ceiling. A commercial two-post has an overall width across the base plates of roughly 137 to 145 inches, an overall column height of 145 to 175 inches depending on model, and needs at least 12 inches of clearance on the drive-in side for the arms to swing open. That means a 12-foot bay is at the tight end of workable, and a 14-foot bay is preferred for wheel bearing service where the tech will be walking around the vehicle with a wheel bearing puller in hand.

Ceiling height is the harder constraint. An SUV with a roof rack on a 12,000 pound rated column can top out above 84 inches lifted, and adding tire clearance for wheel bearing removal pushes it higher still. Waukee dealership bays with 12-foot ceilings will hit the ceiling limit on tall vehicles at full rise. For those bays we spec a short-column overhead-style variant or a symmetric floor-plate model with a lower maximum rise. The bay dimensions decide the model — not the other way around.

Hydraulic vs. cable-driven for high-cycle bearing work

Two-post columns come in two synchronization styles: hydraulic (each column has its own cylinder, tied by a hydraulic equalizing line) and cable-driven (one cylinder drives both columns via steel cables). For high-cycle work like wheel bearing service, we lean toward hydraulic-equalized designs. The reason is that cable-driven systems, while robust, add a wear item — the cables themselves — that hydraulic systems do not have. In a shop doing forty-plus wheel bearing jobs a month, cables will need inspection every six months and replacement every four to five years.

The trade-off is that hydraulic-equalized columns cost more up front and require a slightly more complex install with the equalizing line routed through the floor or overhead. On a Waukee dealership install, we typically recommend hydraulic equalization on any column that will see more than twenty-five cycles a day. Cable-driven columns are still an excellent choice for lower-cycle shops or restoration environments — and Rotary’s cable systems in particular have a fifty-year track record — but the duty cycle math points to hydraulic for a busy dealership bay. Either way, the column has to be ALI Gold certified as a system.

Warranty and service reach in the Des Moines metro

Buying an auto lift is not just buying hardware — it is buying the service network behind it. The ALI Gold buying checklist

Here is the checklist we walk through with every dealership service manager looking at an ALI Gold auto lift install. First, confirm the specific model number appears on the ALI/ETL certified lift directory — not just the manufacturer, but the exact model and revision. Second, confirm the installer is factory-authorized for that brand and can produce a certificate of installation compliance. Third, confirm the shop has passed the concrete slab requirement for that model — usually a minimum of 4 inches at 3,000 psi, though some heavier lifts require more. Fourth, confirm annual ANSI ALI/ALIS inspection is scheduled and budgeted.

Fifth, and often overlooked: confirm the arm restraints, safety pawls, and hydraulic system are all rated for the shop’s expected duty cycle. A 15,000 pound rated lift installed for occasional use has different service intervals than the same lift running forty wheel bearing jobs a month. Sixth, get the warranty and service response commitment in writing from the local partner. If any of these six items cannot be documented, the lift is not truly ALI Gold in practice, regardless of the label on the column.
