The parts pipeline question no hobbyist thinks to ask
Ten years from now, when your cables need replacement, the lift you bought needs a working parts pipeline. That means an authorized distributor within driving distance, factory support that returns calls, and a stock of common wear items. Annual inspections at home: what a lift lets you actually do
An annual inspection for a hobbyist is a self-directed exercise. Iowa does not require passenger-car inspections, but every serious owner does one anyway. On the daily-driver Sienna, that means: brake pad life, rotor thickness, tire tread depth and wear pattern, tie rod ends, ball joints, sway bar links, wheel bearing play, CV boot condition, exhaust hangers, and fluid drip inspection at the transmission pan and rear cover. On the Miata project, it means all of that plus subframe bushings, differential mounts, and shock lower mounting eyes. Every one of those checks happens at chest height on a lift, not on jack stands. Fitting a two-post auto lift in a 10-foot ceiling
The West Des Moines garage is 10 feet floor-to-ceiling, which is the marginal case for a two-post lift. A standard 10,000-pound symmetric two-post typically measures 145 inches overhead beam height. That is 12 feet 1 inch, and it will not fit. The fix is either a lower-profile lift specifically sold for 10-foot ceilings, running around 137 inches to overhead beam, or a floorplate model with a crossbar on the floor and no overhead beam. Both are readily available from Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak. We spec the lower-profile overhead model most often for hobbyists because floorplates create a tripping hazard in a busy garage. One: identify two shortlist brands with 20-plus years of history and confirmed parts support. Two: measure ceiling height and add three inches of headroom to the tallest vehicle. Three: measure garage width and confirm 12 feet minimum between columns for a symmetric lift. Four: confirm concrete slab is at least four inches of 3,000 PSI, or plan to pour column pads. Five: rated capacity at 2,000 pounds above your heaviest vehicle. Six: ANSI/ALI certification, non-negotiable. Seven: shipping cost included in the written quote. Eight: install available from a local crew, not white-glove from the manufacturer at three times the price. Nine: written first-year service coverage. Ten: buy the pad extensions on the same order, because you will need them.
What he actually bought and why
The West Des Moines hobbyist bought a low-ceiling Rotary SPO10 with the overhead beam configuration modified for 10-foot ceilings, a set of three-stage front arms, tall and short pad extensions, and our install service.
