A collector outside Cedar Rapids called us in early spring with a simple-sounding request: he wanted an auto lift so he could park a summer car above a winter driver and stop paying for offsite storage. Two vehicles, one footprint, in a 30-by-40 outbuilding with a poured floor he had never thought twice about. What followed was a year we think is worth writing down, because almost every step of it — the slab investigation, the install, the first winter of stacked storage, and the first service call the following spring — surprised him. We handled the whole thing from Ames, and this is the honest version, including the part where the concrete cost more than he expected.

February: The Phone Call and the First Real Question

His opening message was short — 7,000 pounds, passenger vehicles only, store one car up and one underneath. That is a very common ask and it points straight at a four-post in the 8,000 to 9,000 pound class. But before we talked about models, we asked the question that decides everything: what is under your feet? He said concrete. We asked how thick. He did not know, and almost nobody does. The building had been put up as a hobby shop about fifteen years earlier and the pour was whatever the contractor did that week.

We also asked about ceiling height and power. He had roughly 12-foot sidewalls with exposed trusses, which is workable for stacking two low sedans but tight for a tall SUV over anything. And he had a 220-volt welder circuit already run to the far wall, which meant the electrical side was nearly free. That is the pattern we see over and over in eastern Iowa outbuildings — power is usually solvable, but the floor is the wildcard. Before we quoted a single piece of equipment, we scheduled a slab check, because every other decision about the auto lift hinged on the answer.

March: What We Found Under the Floor

We drilled two small test holes, one at each intended column line, and hit bottom at just over four inches. No visible rebar in either core — fiber mesh only, which is typical for a residential-grade hobby building pour. Four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete is technically at the published minimum for a lot of four-post models, and honestly the load distribution on a four-post is gentler than a two-post because you have four base plates spreading weight instead of two columns fighting a moment arm.

But here is where we gave advice that cost us margin on install day. We told him that four inches with no rebar and unknown subgrade compaction was a coin flip we would not want to make with a collector car parked eight feet in the air for six months at a time. Our recommendation was to saw-cut and re-pour pads under the four column locations, tie in half-inch rebar on a grid, and go down to a six-inch minimum thickness with a compacted base. That is a day of demolition, a day to pour, and 28 days to cure before we would set anchors. He thought about it for a week and did it. April: Rebar, Cure Time, and Why We Wait

Rebar does not directly increase the pullout strength of a wedge anchor — the anchor grips the concrete cylinder immediately around it. What rebar does is stop the slab from cracking and spreading when a concentrated load tries to punch through, and it ties the new pad into the surrounding floor so the whole section acts as one piece. On a four-post install, the columns want to rotate very slightly inward under load. A reinforced pad resists that. A thin unreinforced slab develops hairline cracks radiating from the base plate, and those cracks are the beginning of anchor creep.

Cure time is the part people want to skip, and we will not. Concrete reaches roughly 70 percent of design strength around a week and full specified strength at 28 days. Anchors set in green concrete can pass an initial torque check and then loosen weeks later as the slab finishes curing and shrinking. We have been called out to re-anchor lifts that somebody rushed, and re-drilling next to a failed hole in a thin slab is a bad afternoon. So he waited out April. In the meantime we ordered the equipment and got the freight scheduled to a Cedar Rapids address, which for a four-post means a curbside drop and a plan for moving long steel runways into the building.

May: Install Day on the New Auto Lift

Install day on a residential four-post runs most of a working day for two people. We laid out the column positions from the manufacturer’s template, checked square and diagonal measurements twice, and marked the anchor pattern. Then we drilled, blew the holes clean, set the anchors, and torqued to spec. Columns went up, cross rails and runways went in, and the cable and pulley system got routed and tensioned. Cable tension on a four-post matters more than people realize — if the four corners are not equalized, the platform racks slightly and the safety locks will not engage evenly.

Then came the hydraulics, the power unit mount, and the electrical connection to that existing 220-volt circuit. We cycled the unit unloaded a dozen times, bled the cylinder, checked every lock position, and then did a loaded test with his daily driver. We also walked him through the daily habits: always lower onto the mechanical locks rather than holding on hydraulic pressure, listen for all four locks to click, and never leave a vehicle up on hydraulics alone. The whole auto lift came in under one day of labor because the concrete was already right, which is exactly the payoff for the March decision.

Summer and Fall: Seasonal Storage in Practice

By June he had the summer car down and the winter driver parked underneath, which is the reverse of what he expected. Storing the vehicle you drive less on top makes sense — you are not raising and lowering the platform every day. He also learned the practical stuff nobody mentions in a brochure. Drip trays are worth buying, because an older car parked overhead will find a way to weep something onto whatever is below. A set of caster kits let him roll the unit a foot or two to clear a door swing during a project. And he added a rolling jack to lift wheels off the runways for brake work.

The clearance math also got real. Vehicle on top plus platform thickness plus enough headroom for a person to stand underneath adds up fast in a 12-foot building with trusses. Two low cars stack fine. A pickup over a car does not, in that space. We measured before he bought, and that is why he ended up with a lower-profile model rather than the tallest option. Winter: What Cold Does to Hydraulics and Cables

Eastern Iowa outbuildings get cold, and an unheated shop in January will teach you about hydraulic fluid viscosity. His first cold-weather raise was noticeably slower and noisier than in July. That is normal — the fluid thickens, the pump works harder, and the cylinder moves at a crawl until things warm slightly. What is not normal is a pump that groans and never builds pressure, which usually means low fluid or the wrong weight of oil for the temperature. We spec a good AW-32 hydraulic oil for unheated Iowa buildings rather than a heavier grade.

Cold also makes cables and pulleys stiff, and any moisture in the building condenses on steel. We told him to wipe and lightly oil the lift cables twice a year and to look at the sheave grooves while he was at it. Frayed strands, a flat spot on a sheave, or a cable that has gone slack on one corner are the warnings that matter. Cables are a consumable on any four-post, and replacing a set on schedule is far cheaper than the alternative. The Following Spring: First Service Call

We came back at the one-year mark for a full inspection. Anchor torque was rechecked on all sixteen anchors and two had backed off slightly, which is completely expected in the first year as things settle. Cable tension needed a quarter turn on one corner to bring the platform level. Locks all engaged cleanly. Hydraulic fluid was down a hair from initial bleeding and got topped off. Total time on site was under two hours, and that visit is what turns a piece of equipment into a twenty-year asset.

What he told us at the end of that first year was that the concrete work he almost skipped was the best money he spent. The equipment itself was the easy part — models are well documented, capacities are published, and a good installer makes install day boring. The floor is where projects go wrong, and it is the one thing you cannot fix after the fact without pulling everything back out.
