A collector about ninety minutes north of us in southern Minnesota emailed on a January morning with a question we get constantly and answer differently almost every time: symmetric or asymmetric arms on his new auto lift? He keeps eight vehicles — a couple of 1960s convertibles, two modern trucks, a wagon, and three sedans that rotate through annual state safety inspections. He had a 30×40 pole building with a concrete floor, tall sidewalls, and a strong opinion that he wanted to open the doors without hitting a column. This is the story of his first year, from that email through install day to the first service call twelve months later.

What symmetric and asymmetric actually mean

The terms describe where the vehicle sits relative to the columns, and the whole difference comes down to arm length and column rotation. On a symmetric hoist, all four arms are roughly the same length and the vehicle centers between the columns, meaning the door pillar lands about even with the column. On an asymmetric hoist, the columns are rotated inward roughly 30 degrees and the front arms are shorter than the rears, so the vehicle sits back — about 30 percent of its length ahead of the columns and 70 percent behind. That shifts the driver’s door forward of the column and lets it swing open.

For a collector, that door clearance is not a small convenience. Getting out of a 1965 convertible with a long door, at ride height, without dragging the edge across a painted steel column, is the difference between using the equipment weekly and using it twice a year. But asymmetric geometry has a tradeoff: because the load sits rearward, it favors vehicles with a conventional weight distribution and it can be fussy with long wheelbase trucks. Understanding which arm layout matches your fleet is the single most consequential decision in specifying an auto lift for a mixed collection, and it is one you cannot change later without buying different arms.

The mixed-fleet problem and the versymmetric answer

Our southern Minnesota customer’s fleet was the classic split. His convertibles and sedans wanted asymmetric geometry for door clearance. His crew-cab trucks wanted symmetric geometry, because backing a long truck deep enough to balance on an asymmetric setup pushes the rear bumper toward the wall and puts the pickup points in awkward places on the frame. He had, in other words, a fleet that argued with itself.

The answer we recommended was a versymmetric configuration — a design Rotary popularized and Challenger offers in its own form. Versymmetric uses columns rotated for door clearance combined with three-stage front arms and longer rear arms, so you can position a small car asymmetrically for door swing or set a long truck effectively symmetric by extending the front arms. One hoist, two geometries, chosen per vehicle. It costs more than a base symmetric unit and it demands a little more attention when spotting the vehicle, but for a collection that spans a 96-inch wheelbase roadster and a 160-inch wheelbase pickup, it is the only configuration that does not force a compromise. We told him plainly it was the more expensive option and why we still thought it was right for him, and he ordered it.

Building measurements in a 30×40 pole barn

Pole buildings across southern Minnesota and northern Iowa are wonderful lift homes and they hide two problems: sidewall height versus true clear height, and slab thickness. His building had 14-foot sidewalls, which sounds generous until you find the purlins, the light fixtures, and a garage door track. Measured clear to the lowest obstruction in the intended bay, he had 13 feet 2 inches — plenty for a clearfloor overhead-beam unit at about 12 feet to the top of the beam, with room for a truck at full rise underneath.

The slab was the open question. Pole barn floors get poured to whatever the builder felt like, and 4 inches is common but not guaranteed, and control joints often land right where you want an anchor. We core-drilled two test spots and found 4-3/4 inches of solid concrete with decent aggregate, which cleared the manufacturer’s minimum of 4-1/4 inches at 3,000 PSI for that capacity class. Footprint-wise, columns landed about 11 feet apart with roughly 8 feet 4 inches of drive-through, and we kept the whole assembly 3 feet off the sidewall so he could walk the perimeter with a creeper and a drain pan. If your slab does not test out, the fix is a cut-and-pour pad — not a bigger anchor, and never an epoxy anchor substituted for a wedge anchor on an auto lift. Install day and the electrical surprise

Install went in a single long day. Columns unloaded and stood, baseplates shimmed plumb within a sixteenth, anchors torqued to spec, overhead beam set, equalization cables routed and tensioned, hydraulic lines run, power unit mounted, fluid filled, air bled, and then the cycle testing — full rise, all locks engaged audibly and evenly, descent, and a load test with his heaviest truck. Then arm restraints checked, safety placards mounted, and a walkthrough on daily inspection habits.

The one hiccup was electrical, and it is the most common one we hit at residential and hobby installs. He had a 220V outlet in the building, but it was a 20-amp circuit feeding a welder on the opposite wall, shared. Standard single-phase power units on a two-post want a dedicated 220V, 30-amp circuit. Sharing with a welder means the hoist stalls the moment both draw at once, and repeated stalling is hard on a motor. His electrician pulled a dedicated circuit two days later and we came back for final commissioning. If you take one practical thing from this article: get the dedicated 220V circuit done before the install crew arrives, or plan on a second visit. Every auto lift we install where power was pre-staged goes in cleaner and faster, and it costs the owner less in labor.

The first six months: annual inspections and daily use

Southern Minnesota does not require an annual safety inspection on passenger vehicles the way some states do, but our customer inspects his own fleet on a schedule anyway before they come out of storage each spring — brakes, lines, bushings, exhaust hangers, fluid seeps. That is exactly the work a two-post excels at, because full access to the underside beats a floor jack and stands by an enormous margin, both in speed and in what you actually notice. He told us in June that he had found a weeping rear brake line on the wagon he would never have spotted on the ground.

Practical habits he built in those first months: he set arm pads with the vehicle-specific lift point diagram in front of him rather than by eye, especially on the unibody cars where a wrong pad placement can crush a rocker. He raised to just off the ground, shook the vehicle, then continued — the single best habit any owner can have. He learned to listen for all four locks clicking in unison, because uneven lock engagement is the earliest warning of a cable out of adjustment. And he kept a log. Twelve months of dates, vehicles, and anything he noticed. That log is what made his first-year service call take twenty minutes instead of an hour.

Year-one service: what actually needed attention

We came back at the twelve-month mark for the first annual inspection. Findings were unremarkable, which is the goal. Equalization cables had taken their normal initial stretch and needed a modest re-tension — completely expected in year one on any new two-post, and the reason we always tell owners to plan on a first-year adjustment rather than treating it as a defect. Anchor torque was rechecked and two anchors took a small amount. Hydraulic fluid was clean with no visible weep at the cylinder rod seals. Arm restraint gears showed no wear. Lock ladders and pawls were clean and engaging crisply.

The only genuine wear item was arm pad rubber, slightly chewed on the two pads he used most. Pads are consumables, they are cheap, and letting them wear to metal is how people mar frame rails. We swapped them and left him spares. We also re-greased the column slider blocks and checked the overhead shutoff bar. Total time on site was under two hours. That is what a properly installed and lightly used auto lift looks like at one year, and it is why we push people so hard on getting the install right — the equipment is not what fails, the installation is. What we would tell the next collector

If your collection is all cars of similar size, buy asymmetric and enjoy the door clearance. If it is all trucks, buy symmetric and enjoy the simpler spotting. If it is genuinely mixed — and most collections are — pay the premium for versymmetric arms, because the alternative is a decade of compromise on every vehicle you put in the air. Capacity-wise, 10,000 lb handles nearly any passenger vehicle and light truck; go to 12,000 if a three-quarter-ton diesel or a loaded dually is in the mix. Do not buy on capacity headroom alone though. Arm geometry, rise height, and lock quality matter more day to day than a spec sheet number you will never approach.

Beyond that: measure your clear height to the lowest obstruction, core-test the slab if you do not have the pour records, run a dedicated 220V 30-amp circuit before install day, and buy from someone who will still answer the phone in year nine when a cable needs replacing.
