A customer in West Des Moines asked us a question nobody usually asks: what will this thing cost me over twenty years? He builds and maintains overland rigs in a 30×40 pole building — a couple of roof-tent-equipped 4Runners, a diesel truck with a flatbed camper, and whatever project his kids drag home. He wasn’t shopping for the cheapest machine. He wanted to know whether the equipment he was about to bolt to his floor would still be worth owning in 2045, and what he’d be spending on it in the meantime. We didn’t have a tidy spreadsheet to hand him, so we built one from our own service records across central Iowa. This article is essentially that conversation, cleaned up and generalized.

Why Purchase Price Is the Smallest Number in the Equation

Most buyers fixate on the sticker. It’s understandable — it’s the number on the website. But across the installs we’ve serviced for a decade or more, the original purchase price ends up being somewhere between half and two-thirds of what an owner actually spends on the equipment across its life. The rest is install, electrical, concrete work, adapters, annual inspection, wear parts, and the occasional hydraulic repair.

Here’s the shape of it in tiers rather than exact figures. A quality home-grade four-post lands in the low-to-mid four figures. A commercial-grade two-post from Rotary or Challenger runs meaningfully higher. Professional install typically adds a four-figure amount depending on drive time and whether concrete work is needed. Electrical for a dedicated 220v circuit is usually mid-three figures if the panel is close, more if it’s across the building. Adapters, drip trays, jack trays, and casters add another few hundred. So the day-one all-in number for a serious auto lift is often 40 to 60 percent above the list price of the machine itself. That’s not a warning — it’s just budgeting. The West Des Moines customer appreciated hearing it up front rather than discovering it in stages, and it changed which model he chose.

The First Five Years: Almost Nothing, If You Bought Right

The good news for anyone running a home or small-shop setup is that years one through five are cheap. Our service records for lightly used residential installs — say, 50 to 150 cycles a year, which is typical for someone doing their own maintenance on three or four vehicles — show almost no parts consumption in that window.

What you do spend is small and predictable. Hydraulic fluid should be checked annually and topped as needed; a full change every three to five years is cheap insurance and takes a couple of gallons of the correct AW-32 or AW-46 depending on the manufacturer spec and your shop temperature. Unheated Iowa buildings favor the lighter weight. Cables on a four-post want a light film of chain-and-cable lube once or twice a year, which is a spray can and ten minutes. Sheave pins want a shot of grease. Safety locks want to be cycled and listened to. That’s the whole maintenance program, and skipping it is the single biggest driver of premature failure we see. The people who call us at year four with a shot cable almost always tell us they never lubed it. The people who call us at year eighteen with a shot cable did lube it, and that’s the difference between a wear part and a repair bill.

Years Five Through Twelve: Wear Parts Show Up

The middle stretch is where an auto lift starts asking for things. On four-post models, lifting cables are the main consumable. Manufacturer guidance varies, but as a practical matter we see cables in home shops going 10 to 20 years and cables in busy commercial bays going 5 to 8. Replacement is a set of four, and on most designs it’s a half-day job with a proper cable-tensioning procedure afterward. Budget mid-three figures for a set plus labor, more on longer-runway models.

Two-post owners face a different list. Chains or cables in the equalization system, slider blocks in the carriages, arm restraint gears, and lock pawl springs are the usual suspects. Slider blocks are cheap and wear quietly — they let the carriage tip slightly under load, which is what causes that clunk people learn to live with. Hydraulic cylinder seals go somewhere in this window on hard-used units; a reseal is a fraction of the cost of a cylinder, and on many Rotary and Challenger models we can rebuild rather than replace. Power unit motors and pumps occasionally fail outright, usually after moisture intrusion in an unheated building. The takeaway: plan on one meaningful repair event in this stretch, in the several-hundred to low-four-figure range, and treat anything less as a good year.

Annual Inspection: The Cost Line People Skip

ANSI/ALI standards call for a qualified annual inspection on lifts in commercial service, and honestly it’s a good idea on home units too. A certified inspection runs a modest per-lift fee, and it catches the things that kill equipment: frayed cable strands, a lock that isn’t engaging on one column, loose anchors, a slow-leaking cylinder, worn arm restraint teeth.

Over twenty years that’s twenty inspections, which sounds like a real number until you weigh it against the alternative. We’ve been called to two collapses in our history. Neither had been inspected. Both had visible warning signs for months. Both cost the owner far more in vehicle damage than two decades of inspections would have. For a commercial shop there’s also the insurance and liability angle — carriers increasingly ask, and an undocumented auto lift is a problem after an incident even if the lift wasn’t at fault. For the West Des Moines customer, a home user, we suggested inspection every other year with a self-check on the off years using the manufacturer’s checklist. He does a spring walkaround with a flashlight and a torque wrench on the anchors, which takes him twenty minutes and covers 80 percent of what we’d look at.

Electricity, Heat, and the Hidden Operating Costs

Nobody budgets for the power a lift uses, and for good reason — it’s trivial. A 10,000 lb two-post with a 220v motor pulls hard for under a minute per cycle. Even at 200 cycles a year you’re looking at a few dollars of electricity annually. Lowering is gravity-fed and free.

The real hidden operating cost in Iowa is climate. Unheated pole buildings swing from below zero in January to over 100 degrees in a July attic space, and that cycling is hard on hydraulics and harder on electronics. Cold fluid is thick fluid, and a lift that’s asked to lift a 7,000 lb truck at 10 degrees is straining in a way it isn’t in June. We advise letting the unit cycle empty two or three times to warm the fluid before a heavy lift in deep winter. Condensation is the other issue — moisture that forms inside a power unit reservoir on a warm day and then sits there is the leading cause of pump and motor failures we see in unheated Iowa shops. A reservoir breather cap in good condition and an annual fluid check catch it. If you’re planning a shop with an auto lift and you have the option, even minimal insulation and a small heater pays for itself in equipment life, never mind comfort.

Resale Value: The Part That Changes the Math

Here’s the number that surprised our West Des Moines customer most. A well-maintained commercial-grade two-post from a major brand holds value remarkably well on the used market. We routinely see 10 to 15 year old Rotary and Challenger units trade for half to two-thirds of their original purchase price, sometimes more if parts availability is strong and the unit has documentation.

That changes the twenty-year math entirely. If you buy a commercial-grade machine, spend the money on install and maintenance, and sell it at year twenty for a meaningful fraction of what you paid, your true cost of ownership over two decades can work out to a few hundred dollars a year. Compare that to a budget import with no parts pipeline, which is often worth scrap value at year ten because nobody can source a lock pawl or a cylinder for it. Parts availability is the whole game on resale, and it’s the main reason we steer people toward brands whose components we can still pull off a shelf. For home-garage and storage-focused buyers, BendPak and Atlas four-posts occupy a similar spot — supported, parts-available, and they don’t crater in value. The cheapest auto lift you can buy today is very often the most expensive one you’ll own.

What We Told Him, and What We’d Tell You

He ended up with a four-post for storage and general maintenance plus a rolling jack bridge for wheels-off work, which for a builder doing brakes, fluids, and suspension bushings on his own fleet covers nearly everything. Twenty-year projection, all in, worked out to roughly the cost of a used compact car spread across two decades — and at the end he owns something with real resale value rather than a depreciated appliance.

The framework we’d hand anyone thinking this through: add install and electrical to the purchase price to get your real day-one number. Assume near-zero maintenance cost for five years if you actually lube and check fluid. Assume one wear-parts event and one repair event between years five and twelve. Add an inspection line, annually for commercial, every other year for home. Then subtract a realistic resale figure at the end, which for a supported brand is substantial and for an unsupported one is zero. Run that on two candidate machines and the decision usually makes itself.
