Last spring we set an auto lift in a detached shop outside Dubuque for a guy who builds overland rigs — a lifted Tacoma on 34s, a 4Runner mid-build, and a Land Cruiser he swears he will finish someday. He came to us with a specific complaint: he was crawling under those trucks on jack stands twice a season to change differential and transfer case fluid, and the taller the build got, the more the ground clearance lied to him. Plenty of room to slide under, not nearly enough room to work with a fluid pump and a torque wrench. This is a walkthrough of that job, from the slab measurement through the first diff service, and what happened to the value of his equipment afterward.

The shop we walked into near Dubuque
The building was a 30×40 pole shed with 12-foot sidewalls and a poured slab the owner believed was four inches. It measured closer to four and a quarter in the middle and thinned toward the north wall where the pour had been finished late in the day. That matters more than most people expect. Anchor pull-out is a function of concrete thickness, cure strength, and edge distance, and a slab that thins out near a wall is exactly where a two-post column wants to live. We hammer-drilled a test hole in three spots and pulled cores of dust to check aggregate and depth before quoting anything.
Ceiling height was the other constraint. Twelve-foot sidewalls sound generous until you stack a lifted Tacoma with a roof rack and a rooftop tent bracket on a carriage. We measured the tallest rig at 81 inches to the rack rails, then added the runway height of the candidate 4-post and the rise we would actually use. There was headroom, but not enough to park a second truck underneath at full lock-out with the tent on. That single measurement drove the whole recommendation. We would rather kill a configuration in the driveway than deliver an auto lift that only works if you unbolt your roof rack every time.
Why a 4-post beat a two-post for this build
An off-road builder is a storage customer half the time and a service customer the other half. A two-post gives you unobstructed wheels-free access, which is genuinely better for suspension and brake work, but it demands a healthy slab and it does not let you park a car underneath and forget about it for four months. A 4-post carries the vehicle on its tires, spreads the load across four posts and a wider footprint, and tolerates the kind of slab we found in Dubuque without a tear-out and re-pour.
We spec’d a 9,000 lb 4-post with extended-length runways and a set of rolling bridge jacks. The runways handled the Tacoma’s 128-inch wheelbase with room ahead of the front tires, and the bridge jacks let him lift the axles free when he needed to pull wheels or work a shock. That combination covers most of what a builder actually does — fluids, skid plates, exhaust, driveline, wheel bearings — without asking the slab to hold a column trying to tip. It also means the lower parking spot stays usable, which for a three-vehicle guy in a 30×40 was the whole point. Install day: anchors, shims, and a level that does not lie
We laid out the footprint with chalk, checked diagonals so the posts sat square, and drilled for wedge anchors at the manufacturer’s specified embedment. On a 4-post the anchoring job is less about restraining tip-over and more about keeping the posts from walking under load, but it still gets done right. Every post got shimmed until the runways read level within the tolerance the manufacturer allows, checked with a rotary laser rather than a torpedo level, because a slab that looks flat almost never is. This shop had about three-eighths of an inch of fall from the door toward the back wall.
Then came the parts nobody photographs: routing the equalizer cables, setting cable tension so all four corners lift together, plumbing the hydraulic line, purging air out of the cylinder, and cycling the unit a dozen times empty before a vehicle ever touched it. We tested the slack-cable safety and every mechanical lock position by ear and by hand. The final step was a loaded test — his heaviest truck up to full height, locks set, and a walk-around at every latch. An install is not finished when the auto lift goes up. It is finished when we have proven it comes down under control and holds where it should.
The first differential fluid service on the new setup
The reason he bought the thing was gear oil. A lifted truck with aggressive tires eats driveline fluid on a schedule that has nothing to do with the factory manual, and Iowa gravel plus winter brine does not help. On jack stands he was doing front diff, rear diff, and transfer case as a three-hour contortion with a suction gun and a drop light. On the new setup he did all three in under an hour, standing upright, with a drain pan on a rolling cart and a light bar clamped to the runway.
What surprised him was the inspection value, not the labor savings. With the rig at chest height he found a weeping pinion seal on the rear axle and a rock-dented crossmember he had never seen from below. Both were cheap fixes at that moment and expensive ones six months later. That is the argument we make to every home shop owner who thinks a lift is a luxury: it is a diagnostic tool as much as a lifting tool. You cannot fix what you have never actually looked at, and nobody inspects carefully while lying on cold concrete on a February afternoon in northeast Iowa.
What an auto lift does to trade-in and resale value
Two resale conversations came out of this job. The first is the vehicles. A rig with documented fluid service intervals — dated receipts, gear oil weights recorded, transfer case done on schedule — trades better than an identical rig with a shrug for a service history. Off-road buyers and dealer appraisers both discount unknowns hard, and a builder who can hand over a folder walks away with real money he would otherwise have lost. Regular access to the underside is what makes that folder possible in the first place.
The second is the equipment itself. A quality auto lift from a major manufacturer holds value remarkably well on the used market, especially in a state where new units carry freight from out of state. We see clean 9,000 lb 4-posts move quickly when someone sells a shop or moves out of state, often for a substantial share of what they paid, provided two things are true: it was installed correctly and it has been maintained. Cheap import units with no parts pipeline behind them are the opposite — they are nearly unsellable once a cable or a cylinder fails and nobody stocks the replacement. That is the resale math most first-time buyers never run.
Power, electrical, and the questions we always get asked
“Do I need 220?” comes up on nearly every call, and the honest answer is: it depends on the power unit, and you have a choice. Most home-shop 4-posts ship with a power unit available in either 110V single-phase or 220V single-phase. A 110V unit will run on a dedicated 20-amp circuit and lifts fine, just slower, and it is harder on the motor if you cycle constantly. A 220V unit raises faster, runs cooler, and is what we recommend when the wiring is already in the building or an electrician is coming anyway.
In this Dubuque shop there was a 220V circuit at the wall for a welder, so we went that direction and had the owner add a dedicated outlet before we arrived. The other prep questions worth answering early: is the overhead door track in the way of the raised runways, are there any lights or trusses over the footprint, and where do you want the power unit so the hose does not cross a walkway. What we would tell the next Iowa builder
Measure before you shop, not after. Slab thickness, ceiling height, tallest vehicle including racks, wheelbase of your longest rig, and where your power is. Five numbers, twenty minutes with a tape and a hammer drill, and they eliminate ninety percent of the bad purchases we get called out to fix. We have pulled more than one bargain unit off a slab because the buyer ordered on price and discovered afterward that the runways were too short or the ceiling too low to use the top lock position.
Buy from someone who stocks parts for what they sell. An auto lift is a hydraulic machine with cables, seals, latches, and a cylinder, and every one of those is a wear item on a long enough timeline.
