Buying an auto lift is the easy part. Getting 2,400 pounds of steel columns, a power unit, carriage assemblies, and a pallet of hardware off a semi trailer and into a pole building outside Ames — that’s where most first-time buyers get surprised. We handled an install last spring for an overlanding builder who had spent two years upgrading a lifted crew cab with heavy 37s, aftermarket hubs, and a rear axle swap. He needed a real way to pull wheels and service bearings without lying on gravel. His shop was a 30×40 with 12-foot sidewalls and a good concrete floor. What he did not have was a forklift, a dock, or any idea what an LTL carrier would actually drop at the end of his driveway. Here’s how the whole thing went, start to finish.

The Build That Started It: Wheel Bearings on 37s

This customer’s truck is not a daily driver in the normal sense. It runs county gravel, Loess Hills trails, and a couple of long western trips a year loaded with a rooftop tent, a fridge, drawers, and water. All that weight plus oversized tires means front wheel bearings and unit hubs are consumables. He’d been repacking and replacing them on jack stands in a gravel drive, which is slow, filthy, and genuinely unsafe once you start putting a breaker bar on a 36 mm axle nut.

Wheel bearing service is one of the strongest arguments for owning your own equipment. You need the wheel off the ground, the vehicle held rock steady while you torque, and enough working height that you’re not crouched. On a four-post with a set of rolling bridge jacks, he can drive up, raise the truck to chest height, jack one corner off the runway, and pull the hub with a slide hammer while standing upright. What used to be a full Saturday now takes a couple of hours. That’s the actual value proposition — not lifting the truck, but doing precision work comfortably enough that you torque things correctly the first time.

Choosing the Right Auto Lift for a 30×40 Pole Building

We walked his building before quoting anything. Twelve-foot sidewalls with a trussed ceiling gave us usable clear height under the low chord. A 9,000 lb four-post with standard columns fit with room to stand under the truck, and he still had clearance to store a project car underneath — a big part of why he wanted four posts instead of two. Storage plus service is the classic hobbyist double duty, and a four-post does both without needing anchors in every direction.

Weight class mattered too. His truck scaled around 7,400 pounds fully loaded with gear. People routinely underestimate what an overlanding rig actually weighs, then buy a 7,000 lb unit and run it at capacity every single time. We spec’d a 9,000 lb model instead. The extra capacity costs less than most people expect and it changes how the equipment behaves — slower cable wear, less deflection in the runways, and margin if he ever puts a friend’s diesel on it. If you’re within 15 percent of a capacity rating on a regular basis, move up a class. That’s the single most common regret we hear about from people who bought their auto lift on price alone.

How Auto Lift Freight Actually Works

Most equipment of this size ships LTL common carrier on a pallet or skidded bundle, not parcel. That distinction matters enormously. LTL means the driver brings the shipment to the end of an accessible road, and unless you’ve paid for liftgate service and inside delivery, unloading is your problem. Columns for a four-post come banded together and can run 400 to 700 pounds per bundle. Runways are long, awkward, and heavy. No two people are getting that off a trailer by hand.

We quote freight up front and we’re specific about it. For a residential or rural Iowa address, the carrier will typically call the day before with a delivery window. Someone needs to be there, physically present, with a way to unload. A 5,000 lb capacity forklift or a good skid steer with forks handles it easily. A tractor with a loader and pallet forks works if the operator knows what he’s doing. What does not work is a truck-mounted receiver hitch and optimism. We’ve also seen customers rent a telehandler for half a day, which usually costs less than a redelivery fee if you turn the driver away.

Unloading Day Outside Ames: What We Did

For this job, the customer’s neighbor farmed and had a skid steer with forks, so we scheduled delivery for a weekday morning when we could be on site. The trailer backed up the drive as far as the gravel allowed. We cut bands one bundle at a time rather than all at once — loose steel on a tilted trailer deck is how people get hurt. Runways came off first because they’re the longest and needed the most swing room, then columns, then the power unit and hardware crate.

We staged everything inside the building on the concrete before the driver left, and we inspected each piece against the packing list with the driver standing there. This is the step people skip and regret. If a column is gouged, a runway is bent, or the hardware crate is missing, you note it on the delivery receipt before you sign. Once you sign clean, a freight claim becomes an uphill argument. In a decade of doing this, we’ve had a handful of damaged shipments, and every one that got resolved quickly was resolved because someone wrote it on the bill of lading. Photograph everything on the trailer, too, before anything moves.

Concrete, Layout, and Anchor Checks Before Assembly

A four-post doesn’t rely on anchors for stability the way a two-post does, but it still needs flat, sound concrete. We measured his slab thickness with a rotary hammer test hole in an inconspicuous corner and got just over five inches of decent pour with no obvious voids. That’s plenty for this application. For a two-post we’d want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 psi concrete and we’d be much fussier about crack proximity and slab age — 28 days minimum cure on new pours, and we’d rather see a month past that.

Layout took longer than either of us expected, which is normal. We chalked the runway positions, then had him park the truck and open both doors, walk around, and imagine rolling a toolbox and a floor jack past. Then we shifted the whole footprint 14 inches toward the north wall so the overhead door track cleared and the air compressor stayed accessible. Do this before a single anchor hole gets drilled. Moving a chalk line takes ten seconds; moving an installed auto lift takes a day and leaves patched holes in your floor forever. We also confirmed the power unit ended up on the side where his 220 V circuit already ran.

Assembly, Power, and the First Cycle

Assembly on a four-post is mostly cable routing and getting the four columns plumb and equal. We shimmed two columns slightly because his slab had a gentle crown toward the center drain, which is common in Iowa pole buildings. Cables get routed over sheaves at the top of each column and terminated with the proper thread engagement — this is the part where DIY installs most often go wrong, because uneven cable tension shows up later as a runway that lifts crooked and a safety lock that won’t drop into the same tooth as its partner.

Power was straightforward here: a 220 V single-phase 20 amp circuit already existed for a welder, and we put in a dedicated receptacle nearby. Most residential-duty units in this class run 208–230 V single phase. Some smaller models run 110 V, but they’re slower and harder on the motor. After wiring, we bled the hydraulic system, cycled the equipment through its full travel five or six times empty, checked lock engagement at every height, then loaded the truck and ran it again. Final step is always the same: we walk the owner through the lock release procedure, the manual lowering valve, and where the grease points are. Then we hand over the manual and mean it when we say read it.

What We’d Tell the Next Iowa Buyer

Three things, in order of how often they bite people. First, solve unloading before you order. Know exactly what machine is lifting the freight off the trailer and who’s operating it on delivery day. If the answer is fuzzy, tell us and we’ll quote liftgate or arrange a different delivery approach. Second, buy capacity you’re not going to live at. The gap in price between weight classes is small relative to the frustration of running a unit at its ceiling every time you drive up on it.

Third, get the layout right on the floor with chalk and a parked vehicle before drilling. We’ve been called out to relocate equipment installed six inches from where it should have been, and it’s never a fun conversation.
